Disorganised pickup at Auckland with no system to identify who came first- waited 2 hours and could see people who came in after us getting dealt with and when we asked we were told we were next which was a blatant lie as we saw others still getting ahead of us. They could learn alot from their colleagues in Christchurch where we dropped off as were given a number when we arrived to keep the customers in order.

This is just a very short summary of all the issues. There is no care or attention to keeping the vehicles clean and maintained. 2 front tyres were below legal and had to be replaced after a lot of discussion and telephone costs. Camper was very dirty so we had to clean ourselves (approx 2 hours). We booked for a 5000km trip but vehicle servicing was overdue after 700km. Thankfully we had no mechanical issues. Kitchen drawers continuously opening when going around bends or corners. The closing mechanism is faulty - we heard from campers that they had the same issue.THL solution is to fit child locks which we did - if this is a known issue then it should be sorted or they fit childlocks. Sink screws were loose. Curtain rail stoppers were missing so curtains came off the rail. Shower drain was blocked with dirt/hairs. Gas tanks hadnt been refilled / checked. The only focus is on turning around the vehicles as quickly as possible. We will never rent with THL again.
Booked a Maui motorhome in Australia and New Zealand. They were both poorly maintained. Virtually no bedding in Australia , hot water on gas didn’t work and when looked was coated in what looked like brick dust. Poorly equipped for the price.when we took it back they couldn’t have cared less. Australia Maui beach was nice but couldn’t use the back table as the socket had been pulled out. Good thing plenty of bedding as it was very cold. The doors especially the entrance door is hard to open and shut. In all they are just poorly maintained.nweve seen lots of European motorhomes in NZ which will be much more luxurious. If Maui is the top of the range I hate to think what the basic one looks like
This is pure horror. One star is even to much.We rented a motorhome for 5 weeks. 11k ausDollar. Took the berth, guaranteed new and everything included. When we arrived to pick up the vehicle we got a dirty and smelly MH. We ended up cleaning everything for the first 3 hours. My wife and i decided not to let this break our vacation so we started cleaning only to learn:The bed linnen is missing ( duvet covers ) so we needed to buy themThe connectors for the fresh water hose are missing so we needed to buy thenThe chemical toilet meter is brokenThe greywater meter is brokenRearlight is damagedGlasses from the kitchen are missingI tried calling but no-one answered and I got an e-mail after 2 weeks from a lady who now wants me to call again ( spent 36 euro on phone costs ) because see thinks a phone call can resolve. So, this is pure theft and a crime. No one should go here and spend huge amounts of money. Where ever you go, you can’t get worse then thisOhh and not to forget … after spending 11k they do offer you an extra insurance for the tires. As if ripping off your customers was not enough on the start……
DO NOT RENT FROM MAUI NEW ZEALAND. THIS IS A COMPLETE RIP-OFF AND BORDERLINE SCAM. THEY DESERVE ZERO STARS IN REVIEWSMaui, a so-called “luxury” brand of the THL group, is an absolute disgrace. The prices are outrageously high and what you receive in return is filthy, broken, outdated junk. Charging close to $1,000 per day for this is nothing short of abusive. The campervan was in a state of total neglect. The furniture was old, falling apart, and completely unusable. We literally had to seal all cupboard doors with duct tape because everything kept collapsing and falling out. At one point, a bottle of sesame oil spilled all over the floor, forcing us to stop the trip and clean the campervan and our luggage, which were drenched in oil. This is not an accident — this is a direct result of poor maintenance and zero quality control. The level of filth was shocking. The upholstery was covered in old, embedded grime. The beds smelled like months-old sweat, as if the cushions had never been washed or properly cleaned. Sleeping in them was revolting. I did not pay luxury prices to live inside a biohazard. The smell inside the vehicle was so bad that our child nearly vomited.Critical systems did not work. The water and toilet level indicators were completely broken and failed to warn us when they were full. As a result, the toilet cassette overflowed. This is unacceptable, unsafe, and humiliating for any paying customer. The fridge was poorly installed, causing our food to fall onto the filthy floor. This is beyond unhygienic and clearly shows a total lack of care for basic health standards. We never used the shower even once because it was so dirty it was unusable. Why pay for features that are simply disgusting and non-functional?If this is what Maui calls “luxury,” then lower-budget brands like JUCY are honestly the smarter option. At least you expect basic quality from them. Maui is nothing but overpriced marketing. This experience was deeply disappointing and honestly feels like a scam. If you want a real motorhome experience in New Zealand, avoid Maui entirely and look at Wilderness Motorhome Rentals instead. We used them on a previous trip and the difference is night and day: clean, well-maintained, genuinely high-end vehicles. We will never rent from Maui again, and I strongly advise anyone reading this to stay away.
October 2025Not fit for purpose, safety issues, poor handling, and unauthorised charge after returnThis was my motorhome rental, and unfortunately the vehicle was not fit for purpose from day one, with multiple faults that should never have been present at pickup.Immediately upon starting the trip, we reported several issues, including: • Only five outdoor chairs supplied instead of six • A fridge travel latch failing, causing the fridge door to open while driving • Drawer catches failing and not staying secure when travelling • A toilet cassette missing a wheelWe were also assured we would be keeping the same vehicle for the entire duration of the trip, however during the hire we began receiving reminders referring to a separate booking with a different pickup date. This caused unnecessary confusion and stress, and we repeatedly asked for confirmation that the rental was in fact continuous with the same vehicle, as originally agreed. As the trip went on, more serious faults emerged, including: • A cracked and unstable picnic table • An electric hob ring not working on mains power • A flickering entry step light • A rear marker light not working • Most concerning, fumes coming from the heater outlet, meaning the heating could not be used safelyThese faults made it clear the vehicle was not road-ready or of acceptable quality when supplied. The handling of these issues was extremely disappointing. We were asked to divert to workshops during our holiday and even to purchase temporary fixes ourselves, with reimbursement suggested later. Communication was fragmented, with multiple staff responding separately and repeatedly referring us back to our booking agent rather than resolving the problems. When we returned the vehicle to Maui Motorhomes HQ, the situation worsened. We were immediately offered a random refund figure without any discussion of the issues we had experienced. We refused this and asked to speak to a manager, as these matters clearly required proper conversation. We waited around 20 minutes, after which an assistant manager from another branch came out, presented himself as handling the situation, and refused to involve the actual branch manager. He was unable to manage the discussion professionally and showed no empathy.During this process, we were also nearly incorrectly charged for excess Road User Charges (RUCs). The figures did not properly account for what had already been paid and were only corrected after we challenged them. We can’t help but feel that many customers — particularly tourists rushing to catch flights — may simply pay these charges without questioning them. Fortunately, we were with our son who lives in New Zealand and had time to stay and dispute this.Eventually, after further discussion, we did receive a slightly higher refund than originally offered, but this was not immediate and only came after pushing back.To make matters worse, around six weeks after leaving New Zealand, and while we were already back in the UK, money was taken from our account by Maui (THL) without authorisation.Overall, this experience involved safety issues, poor communication, lack of professionalism, and unacceptable post-rental billing practices. We would strongly advise anyone hiring to inspect the vehicle thoroughly, question all charges, and closely monitor their bank statements even after returning home.Terrible experience.
They were friendly, helpful and patient with us.We appreciated the offer of taking food and things from the Cubboard which people leaving couldn't take with them. And we could leave things there that we could not take back to Australia with us when we were leaving. The Van never missed a beat and was clean and we had everything we needed. We truly enjoyed our stay. I missed our little Motorhome for a while...after returning it. The only thing was the rattling of some grates or the table in the cubboard while we were driving. We got used to it. :-). Loved our Mercedes. Gabriele
At the end of last year (2024) I wanted to rent a camper for a trip in New Zealand. After studying options I selected an Apollo camper and then started to read reviews. I found that both Apollo and Maui (from the same group) as well as almost all other rental companies have a poor rating making it quite hard to decide. In the end I reasond: we want to go there and therefore we just select what we think best and we deal with it. I ordered an Apollo but we got a comparable Maui small campervan for 4 persons. Our experience:When we got the vehicle it took some time to get it. This was because (of course almost) all customers arrive in the morning and want to get going, all at the same time. The hand-over was good, sufficient time for questions dealt with in a pleasant way. The vehicle was sufficiently clean (but of course used). We indeed (as also others noted) had 2 small leakages when it rained but nothing serious. When we returned the camper it was noted and would be repairerd. After some 4.000 km we had to fill up the addblue. When we mentioned this the cost was refunded without us asking for it and not having a receipt! As a conclusion: we think we got the performance as advertised and it was a pleasure to deal with the company.I can imagine that reviews are written when expectations are not met, but if these are the only reviews one may get a false impression. Therefore a very good review and the advice: value the reviews.
