Wow!! An amazing winter skills trip in the Cairngorms, an abundance of new skills learnt! A highlight was digging our own snow shelters. Mac is a great guide: very knowledgable and considerate of all members of the group. Would most definitely book again:)
Nomad ran a winter skills day for our charity, 999 RE:SET, and absolutely nailed it. Content and delivery were perfectly judged, and Phil was superb—professional, knowledgeable, and great fun. The whole group were buzzing by the end of the day.Couldn’t recommend Nomad enough.
As the founder and trustee of 999RE:SET, I had the privilege of joining our one‑day Introduction to Winter Skills course with Nomad Mountaineering on Saturday 21st February in the Cairngorm mountains — and it was an outstanding experience from beginning to end.Our instructor set the tone immediately: professional, calm, highly skilled, and an exceptional teacher. They brought the whole group together with ease, created a supportive learning environment, and moved at a pace that kept everyone engaged and confident. The balance of instruction, hands‑on practice, and safety awareness was spot on, and every participant came away feeling more capable in winter conditions.Everyone attending had a brilliant time. The day was not only educational but genuinely uplifting — the kind of experience that strengthens confidence, builds community, and leaves a lasting impact. For a charity focused on the wellbeing of emergency responders, that means a great deal.Nomad Mountaineering delivered far more than a course; they delivered an experience rooted in expertise, patience, and genuine care. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough, and I’m deeply grateful for their support of 999RE:SET and the people we serve.
I attended a 1 day winter skills course in the Cairngorms, ran by Nomad for 999Re:set. Phil the instructor took us through the planning phase, checking the latest weather and avalanche reports to finalise our route. We were able to confirm what the reports had predicted for the location throughout the day and learn skills to manoeuvre safely in the mountains. Had a great day and would recommend them.
Just finished up another winter skills course in the Cairngorms with Mac. Had a big first day up Ben Macdui and digging snow holes before a second lower day avoiding the wind and learning a variety of winter skills. Mac is great at making everyone feel safe, while also making it challenging enough that its rewarding. I’m sure I will be back to do another course in the future.

Mac is the man!! His knowledge, expertise, and above all..patience is second to none. I appreciated his thoroughness, focus on safety, and checking in with the members of the group for understanding. While teaching mountaineering is an incredible skill that Mac is unmatched in, his people skills are right up there with it. He made me and the group I was with feel empowered and strong while keeping it lighthearted, as Mac is great at cracking jokes. Thank you for an unforgettable winter experience in the Cairngorms mountains!!
I had a great weekend in the Cairngorms with Nomad. The expertise and professionalism of the Nomad team were exceptional. I had a truly epic weekend in spectacular scenery and saw the Scottish winter mountains at their best and worst but at all times I felt I was in safe hands as safety was the absolute and only priority. Every one was treated with respect no matter what their experience level at all times throughout the trip.I learnt a lot as throughout I was given detailed explanations of weather forecasts, required kit, route planning etc I would highly recommend Nomad to anyone looking for an awesome mountain experience.
Recently did a Winter Skills course in the Cairngorms and it was an experience. Despite terrible weather, I felt completely safe with George throughout the 3 as he explained his reasoning behind every decision he made and he was always on hand for any questions and checking up on everyone regularly.When the weather did clear up, I felt I learned a lot from both George and Mac, both technical skills and weather and conditions knowledge.This is the second trip I've done with Nomad and I'm looking forward to, hopefully, many more and would recommend them to anyone.
