I purchased a £50 gift card from Tesco for my 83 year old mother as a gift. I gave it to her and she decided to go out and spend it on some clothes. She filled up her basket and went to the checkout to pay using the gift card. When it came to pay, she was told that there was no money on the gift card. She was visibly upset and had to put the items back. On returning home, she contacted me and told me what had happened and was still upset and embarrassed. I contacted One4all and expressed my concerns and anger with what had happened. They informed me that the card had been used in Croydon and depleted the £50 balance. I informed them that my mum was 83 and lives in Liverpool and had never been to Croydon. I had to complete an online form explaining what had happened and would receive a response within 1 working day. This didn’t happen and I contacted them again. I was then told that it had been sent to the reissue department and I would receive a replacement in 2 working days. After 3 working days I still had not heard from them so I contacted them again. I was informed that they were running behind and it would be sorted out by close of play that day. This happened and I was sent a digital gift card for the original amount. Basically from what I gather, the gift card had either been duplicated or hacked somehow. Although I did eventually get the card reissued, this doesn’t take away from the upset and embarrassment my mum went through. There was no apology or explanation or even some kind of goodwill gesture. Next time I will just give her the money as then at least I will know she physically has it. I won’t be using these cards again.
