Petrehomer UK The UK Model For Other Dog Rescues To Emulate.
Since early 2024 I had been assisting an ex neighbour in Nunhead London to offer a 'forever home' to a dog or a pair.
My ex neighbour in her early 80's has no mobile phone, so using my laptop and multiple visits to the local library was the format.
Four rescue dogs in total, Valentino (ex rescue from Bosnia) passed away after just ten months from a brain tumour, the other three for various reasons had to be returned.
Over the last two years and literally many hundreds of hours later, I had in that period applied for dogs from approaching ONE HUNDRED 'Dog Rescues' from Battersea to pardon the pun 'every man and his dog.'
Making literally hundreds of applications was time consuming and wearisome. Watching paint dry comes to mind.
Since January 2026 I had endured over ten weeks (at least one full day each week) making applications.
Being in her 80's many doors were closed.
This lady had cared for seventeen rescue dogs over a period of fifty five years, and could not be more 'qualified' or experienced.
From a monu'mental' list finally at the eleventh hour I explored PetrehomerUK.
OUR SHIP HAD COME HOME.
This dog rescue (cats, rabbits & more) is a genuine one off.
LOL think of a speed dating site for humans finding pets.
However there is nothing 'blind' about this.
How this matching service is run should be the norm NOT the exception.
If this was the norm then then the majority of dog rescue 'centres' run at huge cost would become redundant.
WHY? You are 'meeting' the present pet owner at their home.
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy AND Stress Free.
1) Set up your profile, this enables anyone offering a pet to check you out.
You can share photos, your experience and what you are seeking eg: must be house trained, not pull on the lead, not be reactive to other dogs.
2) Search for your potential pet. The site is so easy to navigate.
When you find a potential 'match' you can express an interest.
NOTE: Dear Jenny that runs the charity asks that a maximum of FIVE are applied for.
We applied for TWENTY FOUR and the small dedicated team had to sift through every application.
3) The team will then shortlist eg the five down to two.
4) The team then reaches out to the owner, 'Mrs X wants to offer a home' the owner if happy with your profile will then respond.
5) If 'yes' you are then requested to make a REFUNDABLE payment of £249 (for dogs, single or a pair, which by comparison is a SIGNIFICANT saving compared to other 'rescues').
6) Home check then arranged via a video call (filmed on your phone) if all ok:
7) Video call arranged with the owner/s, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet the owner/s and the dog/s, also to ask any questions.
8) If both sides are satisfied then a visit is arranged to meet and 'walkies.'
If all OK you might be returning with your new dog/s or maybe will return a few days later to make it happen.
9) If during the home owner video call either side decides there could be a mismatch, you will be issued with a FULL refund.
Jenny who runs this charity went over and above the call of normal duty in helping my ex neighbour to find a suitable match.
So out of approaching ONE HUNDRED 'dog rescues' if you are wanting to offer a 'forever home,' or you are at home and need to give up your pet,
PETREHOMER
Should always be your first port of call.
Trust me I have been there, done it, and got the doggy T Shirt!
Awful place, when I spoke to Dogs Trust and RSPCA they hadn't heard of them
They don't answer your questions or concerns won't speak to you and only seem.concerned with their fee, they push for rehoming (see other reviews) they should be shut down
Superb support from the staff (the two Jennifers), thorough checks to ensure the adopter is right for the pet and then constant help and support throughout the whole process. Highly recommend using this wonderful charity.
We recently listed our beloved dog for adoption through PetRehomer, hoping to find a suitable home nearby so we could still see him occasionally. Initially, the experience was promising. Jenny from the PetRehomer team was quick to respond, list our dog, and discuss our specific requirements. We appreciated that she understood our desire not to rush the process and emphasised that we should only proceed if we felt comfortable with the adopters.Within just one day, we received an application and were advised to follow their adoption process, which included a home visit and as many meet ups as we felt necessary. This was important to us, not only to ensure the adopters were a good fit for our dog, but also that our dog was a good fit for them. However, things took a turn when the adopters wanted to take our dog after just one park meetup. We expressed our concerns, especially since my wife hadn’t met them yet and we hadn’t completed a home visit. Despite this, we received a call from Jenny pressuring us to hand over our dog, stating that the home visit was unnecessary, even though it’s listed as a key step on their website. She warned us that the adopters might withdraw if we didn’t comply within a week.We felt unheard and pressured, especially as we were about to leave for a holiday and had simply asked to wait until our return to finalise the process. The adopters eventually withdrew, and Jenny blamed us for being unable to commit, even though we were just trying to ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition for our dog.In our view, PetRehomer failed to set clear expectations with the adopters and abandoned their own process under the pressure of a paying customer, overlooking the well-being of the dog in the process. If you deeply care about your pet and want to ensure a proper introduction and transition to a new family, we would caution against using PetRehomer. Unfortunately, it seems that when adopters push for a quick handover, your concerns and your pet’s well-being may be overlooked.
We were looking to get a dog as we lost our dog in February, pet rehomer helped us. The system they have is second to none. We found our pup and with the help of the team especially Jenni ❤️ we managed to get our new pup. I would and have recommended pet rehomer first class service and team Thank you all x
Brilliant charity who help people responsibly rehome their pets. I got my dog via them in September and it was a thorough process where I had to create my profile, I was home checked and then had a video call with the owner where we saw the dog and vet records were shared. I would not hesitate to use them again to get another dog, and I recommend to my friends and family.
Seemed like a good idea but wouldn't accept my advert as there are some behaviour issues I was upfront about and would expect any rehomer to consider carefully. I realise it's difficult to rehome an occasionally challenging dog (he can resource guard) but their rejection of animals with any behaviour problems is hidden away in the FAQ section of the website - really not obvious unless you hunt for it. Why not just put that on the front page? And they deleted my account without explanation, or rather they messaged me but had already deleted the account so I couldn't access the message, and then completely ignored my email, which is just rude. So after digging through the site, I assume this was the problem.
Such a simple and supportive process with the pet at its heart. Jenni ensured that our adoption of Mango (now renamed Daisy) went smoothly both for us and her owner. We had a Home Check with Karen via WhatsApp video, which felt more like a chat with a dog loving friend than a Home check. We were then able to talk to Daisy’s Rehomer, see pictures and video, find out about Daisy’s routines, food, sleeping and exercise, while her owner could also find out about us, our existing dog and our lifestyle. Daisy is perfect for us, we couldn’t be happier. She’s settled in so well and she is an absolute joy. She’s given our older girl, Bonnie, a new spring in her step and it’s hilarious watching them play. She’s made our doggy family complete again. We found PetRehomer by accident after finding Rescues difficult to deal with, (particularly because we already have a dog) and having been scammed. The process was so friendly, welcoming and sensible that I am now a volunteer!
