Absolutely loved the adventure and challenge of cycling coast to coast across South America in January. Rat Race organisation was fantastic as Rob (race director) said literally all we had to do was make sure we ate, drank & slept as much as possible then keep pedalling…………I am still on a high from completing this Epic challenge along with my Lincs. Crew and fellow TransAndeans. (A great bunch)The RR crew were all fantastic including the medics, bike mechanic and lovely ladies & gents manning the feed stations and the Argentinian gang - all trying to cool us down along the way and keep us hydrated. The only negative really was some of the accommodation was a bit basic but I guess there wasn’t a lot of choice up the Andes!Would definitely recommend RatRace Adventures 😊
If you are reading this there is a high chance you are thinking of doing a Rat Race event or maybe even a Rat Race Trans Andean. I have only done one Rat Race event, the Trans Andean and here are my comments:1) As others have said this is an adventure, not a holiday. It's a tough mental and physical challenge. To get the best from it you need to prepare well, listen to all the advice and commit.2) Some of the accomodation and food along the way are equally a challenge. There are no Premier Inns, nor food we'd expect in the UK, but that's why you go isn't it, to taste adventure and experience the unknown?3) The Rat Race team are 100% amazing, you have to be responsible for yourself, but the support team take care of you and genuinely care about you. They work 18hr days to keep the event on the road. Respect them as much as they respect you and things are fun, enjoyable and smooth everyday.4) The local people, scenery, smells, tastes and experiences are amazing.5) You will meet and bond with people like never before. You all go deep on this event and the companionship and compassion from fellow riders is incredible.6) I learnt a lot about myself on this event, others did too, So if you are looking for something that really challenges you, look no further.I highly recommend Rat Race and the Trans Andean to anyone looking for an exciting cycling challenge.
A truly exceptional trip which was very professionally organised. I would highly recommend to anybody with a sense of adventure. Pre event there was comprehensive list of kit and advice on what we should take. Plus plenty of opportunity to discuss with others, which added to the experience. Kit checks, cycling and medical briefings were all really helpful pre setting off. Once underway it really was amazing how good the route was (even the long straight roads) and the support offered. There is an established routine for breakfast, start time on the bike which at first seems a challenge. But soon turns out to be routine, which is great. Once underway there are plenty of food stops, with a wide variety of food and some amazing support from the staff. Feeding, morale, medical needs and mechanical support are all first class at each stop. The accommodation ranges from basic (mainly dictated by remote location), to some really first class places to stay. Certainly better than I was expecting. It might sound a cliche, but apart from the achievement of riding over the Andes and cycling over 1,000 miles in 10 days, what really made the trip was the people involved. There was a wide range of nationalities involved, which added to the banter and comraderie. Plus all the RatRace team worked tirelessly to make the experience a safe and enjoyable one. Yes it was tough, the days were long, and boy was it hot! But what an experience for the 38 of us who took part. Thank you everybody!
From the moment I signed up to the final goodbye this event was staged perfectly. Starting with the pre-race meetings, info, kit lists. All were well thought out and thorough. The kit list was overwhelming at first but interesting how many items various people used during the event that I may have scoffed at initially. Pre-event meetings were spot on for the info I needed. Upon arrival the set up and accommodations were as described from rough to 4 star hotel quality. Pre-ride daily updates were helpful, the pit stops were great. Dinners and breakfast had the right variety and amounts. Most importantly the staff were unbelievably friendly, accessible and knowledgeable. This was my first Rat Race adventure. It will not be my last.
A very well organised event.Safety is paramount with a full time medic and nurse and for the bikes a full time mechanic. All food / accommodation / pit stops provided.Contingency planning had been well thought out.Hotels / hostels were variable but we had to take what there was en route as the area is so vast and remote.Where good hotels were available we had them. The support crew were amazing throughout - nothing is too much trouble.I wouldn’t hesitate to use RatRace again or recommend them to any adventurous souls looking for a great experience!
I completed the Transandean Coast to Coast bike ride earlier this month after signing up and training for it over a year ago. I was super impressed with Ratrace - they can be a little rough around the edges on communication - but they’ve got in going on in all the places that it matters. They CARE - a lot - about the people on their trips and man do they work hard to deliver the best experience possible. There were 17 people supporting our group of 40 and each and every one of them was amazing. This is not a smooth, trouble-free holiday. This is an adventure. They plan it to max out the adventure element while considering safety and people’s limits, they support it knowing the issues that adventures will throw up and they deliver an incredible experience. If you want to be challenged, earn a sense of achievement, and live on the edges of your comfort zone for an incredible, worthwhile and life-changing experience, Ratrace will deliver that and at a very reasonable price. It’s pretty clear that this company loves the adventure and is not in it for the money. There will always be things that they’re looking to improve but I would do another trip with them in a heartbeat (if it didn’t take me a year to prepare for them).
Firstly the trip was a fabulous experience and I would truly recommend. Three things stood out for me(1) organisation and team. For a max of 40 cyclists (think it was 37) Rat Race had a team of 17 on the ground. Everything was super organised…. Logistics, route, food stops, medical support, mechanics, local crew. All under the leadership of Rob. The team was great fun and worked super hard for us.(2) Food. I was a bit worried about quantity and quality of food. I needn’t have been. Particularly the food stops - never eaten so much in my life. (3) flexibility- one day had to be cut short because of horrendous storm. Rob was super flexible in amending plans to take those who wanted to back 12 miles to the famous toilets we sheltered in to start the next day. He did say that he couldn’t do this every time as as it would depend on the circumstances but a big thanks on a positive mindset to work on a solution. All in all a great trip. You pay for what you get. Would recommend.
I have previously booked a trip with this company. The trip itself was fine, but this company is unable to respond to emails. I noticed this issue the last time, and now, after booking a new trip, I’m encountering the same problem again. They’re happy to take your money but are unwilling to respond to a simple question. All you get is an auto-reply, which is completely useless. They offer beautiful trips to fantastic destinations, but proper contact and follow-up on questions should also be part of the customer journey. Very disappointing and amateurish.
