This review is for Ratrace's Guatemala Sea to Summit event. In two words: tough, but awesome! Highly recommended way to explore the jungle and peaks and volcanoes of Central America, hosted by an incredible in-country support team. Be prepared for tough days on the bike on cobblestone roads and early starts to ascend Tajumulco ... but totally worth it!!
Rat Race isn’t just an endurance race, it’s a way of life. Like minded people, some you meet for the first time, supporting you from day one. And we should know. Luggage never arrived, having hardly any of the mandated kit list, everyone on this trip helped, offering spare clothing (Simon and Maria you totally saved us lending us your spare bike shorts! To Jim and team lending head torches, waterproofs and much more!). It’s hard to put in words the Rat Race Guatemala experience. From our local passionate team spearheaded by Lusia who imparted so much history, anecdotes and knowledge to the elfly nimble James Appleton who navigated us back on track on the final days climb and especially to the strong, humbling people we lived with 24/7 completing the race, I loved it all. Seeing the country in this way provides such a unique experience. The people of Guatemala from the elderly to the youngest child were incredibly warm and welcoming. The landscape! Breathtakingly beautiful. From the cane fields, jungle and cobblestoned tracks - yes, even the cobblestoned tracks - to dormant and active volcanoes, lakes and single track crazy bike climbs, Rat Race is physically and mentally challenging and not for the faint hearted. But when you stand on top of the highest volcano in Central America with everyone making that climb the emotion is raw…..tears, laughter…. It’s all shared, appreciated and humbling. If you want to test your resilience and resolve, experience a country and its authenticity, in the knowledge you are completely supported by the experienced Rat Race team and meet incredible people then sign up - you will never regret it.
Great endurance adventures with clear goals to drive for. Local cultural aspects covered with local guides supporting the trips brilliantly. The Ratrace team provide unending support and guidance but at the end of the day the seven days of effort and grind are yours.
I've completed many Rat Race events over the years & always found them to be well organised & well supported & Guatemala was no different! A mentally & physically demanding event coping with the heat, the cobbles & the jungle but when the whole group reached the summit of Tajumulco, it was such an emotional moment for all. Rat race staff, crew & guides were all amazing & so supportive. Guatemala & it's people were warm & welcoming & learning the history & culture from Luisa just added to the awesome experience we had on this trip. Can't recommend it enough!
Absolutely incredible adventure! The Guatemala Sea to Summit by RatRace is not to be underestimated. While the distances are ”not RatRace”, the heat saps your energy and makes this adventure a fight with your body and mind. The journey takes you through UNESCO sites, sugar cane plantations, and beautiful rural villages.The views, people, and countryside create an assault on the senses, yet it's wonderfully tranquil. The hardest part was the final 150m ascent of Volcan Tajumulco. Each step is grueling, but standing at the top, with the world at your feet, is unbeatable.This event is a physical, mental, and practical test. It's one of the best things I've done. If you're up for a challenge that combines stunning landscapes, and cultural immersion, this is it.
If I could give it more stars I would!!This was one epic adventure to the wilderness of the Shetlands for the End to End Test Pilot event. Stunning route from South to North through the changeable Scottish Weather. Once again lead by the experience of James from Rat Race and the brilliant support crew. If you prefer pure running events and not sure about stepping up to the 6 days of The Isles, then this is one to go for.
What a great team and a fantastic way to see the whole island chain in one day! Rat Race plan for, and think of, everything so you don’t need to. So well looked after the whole weekend, with nice hotels included. Met so many lovely people again, can’t wait for the next event! Thank you RR and fellow ‘ratters’ 🥰
A truly great experience on the sea to summit at Scafell Pike. A fantastic scenic and brutal route choice that just keeps finding more and more assent. Great support from the team in pretty poor weather on proper knarly terrain. Looking forward to Yr Wyddfa to complete the trilogy.
If you want to do something completely mental, do this. It was scary and exciting and absolutely savage. But if you live for the outdoors and you crave the views from the fells whilst catching your breath and crying tears of joy when you summit, then Sea 2 Summit is for you. Wear your big boy pants though, it’s definitely not for marshmallow people. Sign up, communication, registration and race day set up was all top notch. The route was nothing less than epic. Oh, did I mention it was absolutely savage. Lol
Rat Race Sea To Summit Scafell Pike. I've now completed 2 out of the 3 in the series and this one was definitely harder than Ben Nevis..... it's just pure nasty and painful and draining BUT Rat Race events are just awesome and I would strongly advise anyone to have a go at these. If you really want to earn your medal then this trilogy is the one to do. Roll on snowdon in 2 weeks.
