My first week using Tandem: The support ppl said that I couldn'tget in at first bc I didn't provide a photo, when it never ASKED for one, as I was just setting-up my account. I got around it by using a different email b4 they even told me that. A fact I put up to their face: they have PLENTY of users who have a compromised photo on Tandem. Some have NO picture whatsoever. Others are CLEARLY perverted and some are clearly NOT genuine. Faces covered, crazy names, naked. So they can't write me and say that it was because I didn't have a picture when I was making a new account! I'm already thinking that Tandem is full of fake, perverted people, just like all the other apps. NOT impressed.
I got the App to practice my Italian speaking, few days later, on WhatsApp , I was contacted by an Italian woman offering her services! At least she wrote it in Italian, so good practice with new vocabulary! I blocked her straight away. Be aware.
The concept is great, connect people that wants to learned a language, making an exchange, I like it. But a lot of people with other intentions, and I don't know how the app can control that. But not everything is negative, I met amazing people that really want to help. I used this app for almost a month.
Tandem has been racist with me. I have created an account and they sent me an email to wait for confirmation and they did not. Excuse is that they have some limitations for some countries, well, I am an ARAB. I have tried different accounts to be honest, and I started feel self-loathing that I might have made a mistake with the information I entered each time. few days ago was me trying for the last time to get approved, basically i am not going to change my nationality or ethnicity, thanks Tandem for being that way.
Great application. #1 It is always improving. #2 Recently, a feature was added to the application which allows you to write in the target language and then get it corrected for grammar, syntax and vocabulary. It is a great addition because it gives you feedback and explanations on how and why your original is flawed. In this way, you learn by leaps and bounds.#3 It gives you the option of connecting with native speakers near you or in the country where the language spoken is your target language. #4 You can record your voice and get recordings from native speakers which helps with listening comprehension and pronunciation.Finally, I have had this app for about 3-5 years and love it so much that I pay for it even though I could get the free version. I have not seen a better application, ever!
Since my retirement from a bilingual position seventeen years ago, I have not had opportunities to speak French. I developed a serious mental block about speaking my second language. My relationships on Tandem have helped me resolve the problem! I specified Francophone women from Québec and my partner has been amazing. We chat daily and speak weekly. She tutors me in differences between standard French and Québec French which has been a boon. My mental block is gone. I am so thankful for the app and my Tandem friend! The app is well designed. Highly recommended.
