Review Time
Sometimes it is best to call to make arrangements and more importantly wait until the product is ready to ship. The trees arrived in February during a warm spell for the area and time of year. The ground was frozen but if you prepare ahead of time you can still plant. I planted the day the package arrived. The roots and crowns were well formed. I used the mud method which means I did not need to stake the trees. I am surrounded for miles around by windmills. A light breeze is 20mph. The trees are standing as straight now 10 days later as they were when I put them in the ground. I planted a similar amount of trees from Willis last year. All of them lived. Two struggled but by the end of fall were looking like they would recover. The rest thrived. Seriously thrived. Be patient. Care for the trees and you will get really good results.
Unlikey to order from Willis Orchards again, nor likely to recommend them to other backyard gardeners. Bought 2 bare root trees and a raspberry plant. One tree was broken in two places, the top and part of the root. The roots of the raspberry plant were entangled with the packing tape used to tape all the roots together. Ultimately, I had to cut parts of the roots off to get the raspberry plant separated. Packaging showed a lack of care, consideration, and quality. Fingers crossed the tree and raspberry will grow. The lesson here is to buy from your local nursery.
I have order from willis many times for many years. I have had all my trees arrive in excellent condition. I have had issues with my Pippin apple trees. Some died fairly quickly and some died after 8-10 months. I believe it is my soil so I did not ask for new trees or reimbursement. Also, had some deer break some in half so I guess I have bad luck lol. As for willis, I would not think of buying my trees anywhere else.
I bought a 4' plus or minus Arbequina Olive tree. When it came in a 4' long box I was confused since I had to pay an oversize fee and I knew it couldn't be 4' plus. When I opened the box I found that the tree was 2'9 and they had stretched and wrapped the lateral roots down which added about 8" (no tap root) and lifted the side branches up which added an extra 2", until it was removed from the box, and it still didn't fill the 4'0 box (inside dimensions 3'11). I paid an oversize fee for an undersize tree. I hardly consider a 2'9 tree a 4' plus or minus tree. I gave 3 stars because the tree looked healthy. But I wouldn't have bought it at that price if I knew it was that small.
The company was very responsive and made the replacement process fast and simple. My replacement fig tree arrived on time and was well packaged with moisture crystals to keep the tree hydrated in transit. The company followed up to make sure all was well.
