The online banking system is ineffective, causing numerous frustrations and excessive calls to the customer support team, which is nearly incompetent and lacks knowledge. I wouldn't recommend trusting this service with your money.
I genuinely value the exceptional service I’ve received from the company. Their team is consistently professional, helpful, and dedicated to making banking straightforward and worry-free. I appreciate the benefits offered and the encouragement to actively engage with my accounts. From transparent communication to dependable support, the company has consistently exceeded my expectations. I feel secure knowing my finances are well managed, and I’m proud to say this will remain my preferred credit union.
I needed (and still need) to make an online purchase, and although I have plenty of my own money in my account I had to call and ask for permission to spend the amount I need to spend. They originally denied my 'request' and asked if maybe there was some other way I could pay, or if I could provide more justification for needing to spend that amount. Unbelievable. Then, after explaining exactly what I was purchasing, they 'allowed' me to access my money. Went online to make purchase- card declined. What a bunch of clowns. Will be closing my accounts.
I have been with BECU since 2009. Unfortunately, because of several unfortunate life events, I had a chapter 13 Bankruptcy during that time. Still, I never bounced a check. During the Bankruptcy, my car broke down. I had to beg, write letters and get my trustee to write letters and finally got them to agree to a car loan. This was 3 years ago. The car was a problem. First the engine broke down causing me to make a $3500 repair. After that was fixed, the transmission went out. The master mechanic said not to put more money into the car. It was a bad year for this car. I drove the car a total of 12 months. Still I never missed a payment! Even though It was not drivable I still had to make car payments and insurance payments. My Bancruptcy was discharged 6 months ago. All house payments are made on time and my credit score is 734. My payment history is excellent. I went into BECU to see if they could convert my loan from a car loan to a personal loan. I could at least sell the car for scrape and stop insurance payments. They denied me! People Helping People? What?I will follow this up with a letter to the President. I am shocked and disappointed! Amended: I want to Add that I received the most condescending reply from BECU. See below⬇️Update, 11/10: after posting my complaint on trustpilot, I received a call from a BECU rep. They Finally allowed me to change the car loan to a personal loan. The person who called me was very nice and apologetic.i believe that there are some nice people working there, but the management and rigid policies suck!!!I will not change my rating and would never recommend this credit union to anyone! Thank you for reading my story. NOTE: If you have been mistreated by a big company, keep telling your story until someone listens!
I truly appreciate the outstanding service I’ve received from BECU. Their team is always professional, helpful, and committed to making banking simple and stress‑free. I value the Member Advantage benefits and the way they encourage active engagement with my accounts. From clear communication to reliable support, BECU has consistently gone above and beyond. I feel confident knowing my finances are in good hands, and I’m proud to say BECU will continue to be my go‑to credit union.
David B's review on Sept 2 is very typical, not just with BECU but others. It mirrors my own experience and that years later, large stable deposits and income, yet they will not loan $5 because of a fully automated underwriting system they outsourced years ago heavily reliant on bad quality third party data and ratings they blindly follow. No human at BECU even looks at it. Their underwriting consists of a zombie data match algorithm. And accounts randomly freezing up for the same reason. Some insider knowledge here.....They use back end software by a listed company, Jack Henry, that is a pile of steaming horse pucky built up over 30 plus years. They also outsource functions like address "verification" on the assumption they know more than the actual customer. The marketing of (INSERT NAME) credit union may change, but all are just pretty labels for third party software the would cease to exist without. They are captive. And that translates to you. There is also a culture, starting at the top, of massively automated broken bots/AI/ external providers and fetish for form and process over substance. Like other credit unions, BECU is an empty shell, a cardboard cutout with absentee, tame, cocker spaniel directors and and over paid and under performing CEO. This is maintained by rigged elections. They survive because they are tax free, enabling any surplus to subsidize their inefficiency and provide cushy jobs for lazy, absentee senior management. This is what you are facing. They not only don't care but are oblivious. BECU is run by a bunch of insiders running the place into the ground, high staff turnover and the usual mysterious, unaccoutable back end office randomly doing stuff.Advice: choose one of the European banks like Revoult, WISE and otherwise be prepared to fire them and switch banks regularly. They depend on inertia, BECU especially, exploiting misplaced customer loyalty. They also traffic your data data for fun and profit. This post will generate an auto bot trying to trivialize the widespread management failure into an itty bitty issue they want to take out of public view to control the narrative. They use the same tactics at annual general meetings with carefully scripted Q&A and self promotion much like a Q and A with the great "leader" of North Korea. It's true that they used to be a very good company, but that's 20-30 years ago. Thesedays they are an empty husk grab bag of third party IT run by rent seeking "management" out to improve their personal gains as the organization burns to the ground.Let's see if the real people running the show address the substance above on this board and refute the specifics about their back end IT outsourcing. No ? Now why is that ?See vacuous, empty cut 'n paste auto generated drivel below. Says it all.....
I am finally annoyed enough to completely move my banking out of BECU. 1. Horrendous fraud prevention outsourcing that rendered my credit card useless on several occasions with no explanation. Stropped using the card and thus lost cash back benefits of several hundred dollars/year.2. TWO terrible auto loan experiences. Despite filling out online application and being pre-approved, both experiences were 2hrs in the branch working with people that had never been trained on how to process and fund an auto loan.3. BECU does not recognize my federal passport card as valid ID. It's good enough for border agents and TSA but not BECU. (lost my driver's license and waiting on replacement) They verified ID using a series of questions, cut me a large cashier's check ($10k+), then called me 5 minutes after I left to let me know the check was useless because of how they verified my ID. As a result, I look like a clown and wasted my time and the seller's time.
(EDIT: I've since secured a loan with a different credit union no problem, with a low interest rate, it just took me by surprise to be denied considering my qualifications and history with BECU, and they have been great besides this 1 issue) , I've been with BECU for 30 years and never had a problem... until NOW. I applied for an RV loan, not much, just 100k or so.. Like I said, Ive been with them for 30 years, (I work at Boeing), My FICO/Credit score is in the 820s out of a possible 850, and I literally have more than TWICE the loan amount in my savings account right now... I applied for the loan, which I assumed was a slam dunk, and... they denied me? Im definitely heated, and considering pulling all my money out... ridiculous..LOL..
Two words come to mind when i think about how BECU treated me. Evil and diabolical. They will screw you over without warning and then gaslight you when you call for an explanation. Their policies are never stated to you. You are expected to know them as if you were an employee. If you misunderstand anything, it's already too late. Make sure you answer EVERY SINGLE one of their calls throughout the day, which can come at any hour (even if you don't recognize the number and aren't expecting a call). They will not attempt any other forms of communication, and it will come back to bite you (it did for me). I am so glad to be cutting ties with them forever. Never again.
