After a long trip through Cambodia, I arrived in Pattaya with a thick stack of Cambodian Riel—about

After a long trip through Cambodia, I arrived in Pattaya with a thick stack of Cambodian Riel—about 800,000 KHR (roughly $200 USD). I knew exchanging Riel outside Cambodia would be difficult, so I specifically searched for ProFX because their website advertises handling "rare Asian currencies." I'm glad I did, but the experience wasn't perfect.

The positives: ProFX absolutely delivered on their promise to handle exotic currency. The staff at the Central Festival branch didn't bat an eye at my Riel. No dramatic sighs, no suspicious glances, no disappearing into back rooms for endless consultations. The cashier simply nodded, took my stack, and began the counting process. The transaction took about 12 minutes total, which felt reasonable given the unusual currency. The air-conditioned comfort of the mall location made the wait pleasant enough. I also appreciated that they provided a detailed receipt showing the exchange rate, the total in KHR, and the final THB amount—no hidden fees mysteriously deducted after the fact. Transparency mattered to me.

The rate reality: Let's be honest—the rate for Riel is never going to be good in Thailand. I received about 6,200 Baht for my 800,000 KHR. When I did the math later, I calculated that if I had exchanged my USD for Riel in Cambodia at a fair rate, then converted the leftover Riel back through ProFX, I lost about 8-9% in the round trip. That's painful but not catastrophic. The rate was clearly posted on their board (though I had to look carefully in the "Other Asian Currencies" section), so there were no surprises.

Overall, ProFX provided a professional, no-drama service for a genuinely difficult currency. The rate wasn't great, but that's the nature of exotic currency exchange anywhere in the world. I left feeling like I'd been treated fairly, even if my wallet was lighter than I'd hoped. 4 stars for professionalism, transparency, and actually delivering on their promises.

I knew my leftover Ngultrum would be a challenge. ProFX was the third place I tried, and the only on

I knew my leftover Ngultrum would be a challenge. ProFX was the third place I tried, and the only one that accepted it. Initially, I was relieved. That relief evaporated during the calculation.

The agent was friendly but clearly unfamiliar with the currency. He had to check a physical binder, then make a phone call. The entire process took 35 minutes in a nearly empty shop. The final quoted amount in Baht was laughably low. When I questioned it, the manager was called and gave me a convoluted explanation involving the Indian Rupee (which the BTN is pegged to), their "buying cost" from their supplier, and a "special order fee" because they don't hold it in inventory.

Essentially, they were buying my currency as a favor, at a price that heavily favored them. I felt I had no leverage; it was either accept their punitive rate or keep the Bhutanese notes as a bookmark. I accepted. The 2-star rating is because they did solve my problem, but in a way that felt like they were exploiting a monopoly on the solution. The combination of long wait times due to their own lack of preparation and the extortionate rate left a very sour taste. ProFX can handle the exotic, but they make you pay dearly for it, both in time and money.

This was not just a bad exchange

This was not just a bad exchange; it was a manipulative and dishonest experience. I had roughly 25,000 NPR (about $190 USD). Their main digital board prominently advertised "BEST RATES IN BANGKOK!" for major currencies. After waiting in line, I handed over my Nepalese Rupees. The agent immediately frowned, said "Ah, difficult currency," and disappeared into a back room for 10 minutes. He returned and showed me a shockingly low figure on his calculator. It was less than half the value I'd calculated using the USD midpoint as a benchmark. When I protested, he pointed to a tiny, faded laminated sheet taped to the side of his booth, showing rates for "Other Asia." The rate for NPR was microscopic, with an asterisk. I asked to see the manager. The manager then performed a classic bait-and-switch. He said, "The rate on that sheet is old. The market is very bad today." He then tapped on his computer and offered me a new, slightly better (but still horrific) amount, claiming he was doing me a "special favor." This proved the initial rate was an arbitrary, exploitative starting point for negotiation. They were trying to gouge the uninformed.Feeling pressured and with limited options, I agreed. The entire interaction was designed to confuse and pressure. They use the facade of a professional chain to prey on travelers with leftover currency. I left with a handful of Baht and the clear understanding that ProFX operates on predatory practices for exotic currencies. It's not a service; it's a trap. SHAME ON THEM.

This was the single worst customer and…

This was the single worst customer and financial experience of my trip. Desperate warning: DO NOT exchange MMK here under any circumstances. I had about 300,000 Kyat (a modest amount) and needed to convert it before my flight. ProFX was the only booth that listed it.The hostility began immediately. The agent put on gloves before touching my bills, then called over a colleague to scrutinize every single note under a UV light, whispering in Thai. They treated my legally obtained currency like it was counterfeit or contaminated. This degrading "inspection" took 25 minutes, holding up the line and causing me immense anxiety. After this humiliating ordeal, they presented their offer: 850 Thai Baht. This is an outright robbery. 300,000 MMK is roughly $85 USD. Even at a poor standard forex rate, that should yield around 2,800+ Baht. They offered less than one-third of the value! When I exclaimed, "That can't be right!" the agent shrugged and said, "No demand. High risk. Take or leave." They knew I was trapped at the airport.I was forced to accept out of sheer powerlessness. They exploited my location, my limited currency, and their position as the only vendor. The combination of demeaning treatment and blatant, extortionate financial exploitation deserves zero stars. ProFX at DMK is not a currency exchange; it's a legalized theft operation for holders of exotic currencies. You are better off keeping the notes as a bitter souvenir than subjecting yourself to this.

The most challenging part was how convincing everything sounded, even when progress was clearly not being made. I kept questioning whether I was misunderstanding the process or simply being impatient. Eventually, I decided to get a professional review to be sure. That’s when I contacted 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙞 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡. They reviewed the entire history carefully and pointed out patterns I had not noticed before. Their explanation was straightforward and grounded in facts. It helped me see the situation more objectively and with less emotional stress.
