Announcements on the train are made only in Swedish, which is not acceptable since many passengers do not understand the language. Not everyone speaks Swedish. All announcements should be provided in English, regardless of the train's location or destination! The only time English announcements are made is at the airport, and after that, passengers are left to figure things out themselves! It's very disappointing, especially since the trains are often late or experiencing issues with the tracks, leaving me unsure if I need to change trains or what the situation is!

Systemic failure: confirmed compensation reversed and then ignoredSJ cancelled my train from Kiruna to Björkliden on 27 December 2025, forcing me to arrange alternative transportation at my own expense (SEK 695).SJ then sent two directly contradictory compensation decisions:• one explicitly confirming reimbursement of SEK 695, and• a subsequent email reducing this to SEK 205, without explanation and in direct conflict with their own written confirmation.I contacted SJ repeatedly to resolve this, re-submitting the taxi invoices and their own confirmation email.SJ has not responded at all.This is not an isolated mistake it is a complete breakdown of accountability. Issuing contradictory decisions, reversing confirmed compensation, and then refusing to engage with the customer demonstrates serious procedural failure.Passengers should be aware: even written confirmation from SJ appears unreliable, and resolving clear errors may require escalation outside the company.Based on this experience, SJ’s handling of cancellations and compensation cannot be trusted.
UPDATE: Dropped the rating from 5 stars to 1 star. Processing yet another cancellation refund, SJ now tell me they are unable to transfer to Lunar Bank Norway because their system is too poorly programmed to understand that a SWIFT/BIC code doesn't have to be the same country as the IBAN (like many neobanks these days) .No info on their site about complaint resolution so it looks like I'm going to have to drag them through the Swedish National Board for Consumer Complaints to get my money back.--Earlier review: SJ have refunded every last krone of my considerable additional expenses when they cancelled a Stockholm to Boden to Narvik route due to equipment failure. I have had my fair share of criticism of Sj in the past — and to be honest their provision of information during disruptions really needs to be improved (I eventually found out what the problem was and why they were unable to provide buses from their competitors' website!)– but on this occasion , refunding to a foreign bank account for two taxis, a hotel, a meal, a Bus and Internet access – it was brilliant. As it should be considering that I was 24 hours late getting to my destination!
I'm surprised to see so many bad reviews on here and can only think that it's because I'm from the UK where the trains are truly terrible! I've used SJ twice now travelling between Gothenburg and Karlstad and on both occasions (August last year and November this year) the price, service, and cleanliness of the train has been superb. Maybe I've just been lucky or am so used to dirty trains and cancellations in the UK that anything is better but I can only report on my experience.
The complaint goes mainly to the staffs inability to help. We had a train booked from Stockholm to Göteborg, that we missed due to maintanance work on the blue metro line 11 that took more than double the usual time to arrive from Kista to T-Centralen. Had to change trains in two stations because only one line was operating. So a mass of people was late to their destinations. When we explained the situation to the SJ staff, they couldn't care less. They were even saying we were not the only ones (there was a line of people standing behind us trying to resolve the same issue) and that we sould buy a new ticket. No refunds possible even though it wasn't our fault. Tickets bought on the same day of departure cost more than double the price than if you book in advance. We did everything right and were super calm when we tried to resolve the issue, and still got screwed and rudely flicked away. If maintenance work occurs on public transport they could at least help us out with partial refund.
Excellent staff that went above and beyond to help. Yasmine in Gothenburg assisted me to get on earliest train to Stockholm. Website was showing fully booked but she took the initiative to check herself and realized they were more seats available since a bigger train arrived. She called her team and made sure website was updated for me to be able to buy the ticket. Yasmine deserve a recognition for personally assisting and being proactive to ensure Sj customer reach earliest their destination.
I used the app to easily book tickets from Stockholm to Uppsala. The train was economical, on time, fast, and clean. I booked return tickets later in the day.I had an earlier mishap trying to use Rail Ninja to book the trip, so really I appreciated the SJ APP.
