I engaged two Toptal engineers, Vadim and Artur, for my company Talkmap over a period of six years, and I cannot speak highly enough of both the talent and the experience.
Vadim, our Senior Software Engineer, single-handedly built and owned our entire multi-tenant Cloner platform: a sophisticated provisioning system whose Temporal workflows enabled thousands of client deployments across three EKS clusters with real-time monitoring and release tracking. He also architected a central Go API that consolidated a 9-service architecture using gRPC, REST, and Temporal workflow orchestration, dramatically simplifying our operations. He introduced ClickHouse for fast analytical querying, refactored our database layer for efficiency, and built job orchestration for LLM-powered data extraction processing over 3 million conversations per month. Vadim is extraordinarily fast, delivers production-grade systems with remarkable consistency, and his code is clean and built to last.
Artur, our Senior AI Engineer and Architect, was the driving force behind our entire AI and machine learning capability. He designed and implemented real-time intent classification, summarization, and generative AI services on transformer architectures. His LLM optimization work reduced our inference costs by 3x to 10x while exceeding baseline performance: a game-changing achievement for our business economics. He fine-tuned foundation models, built end-to-end AI inference pipelines, architected our self-hosted GPU inference on NVIDIA clusters, and continuously benchmarked state-of-the-art models and techniques to keep our platform at the leading edge.
Together, Vadim and Artur formed the technical backbone of Talkmap. Vadim built the platform and infrastructure that powered everything, while Artur built the AI intelligence that made it valuable. Both are exceptionally skilled, fast, reliable, and a genuine pleasure to work with. They communicated clearly, took full ownership of their domains, and consistently delivered beyond expectations.
Toptal provides competent and skilled labor of all sorts. Affordable hourly wages are great for a start up. Management is extremely helpful and cares about your experience. The model is well crafted and has the customer in mind. Highly recommend.

I love it. The entire experience from matching with a client all the way through the engagement is amazing. I think one of the most important things for me is that I always feel supported. Throughout an engagement I never feel alone and I know that if I need something I know that there is someone there supporting me. I've worked for other staffing agencies, and that level of care is one of the things that Toptal has that others have not.
I made it to the final stage of Toptal’s screening. Got a huge, open-ended take-home assignment. No time estimate, but the scope was massive if you actually cared to do it properly. I spent 40+ hours on it. A week of work. A long, detailed submission that followed the brief closely.
Then the interview happened.
The interviewer didn’t even know if I had submitted the project. Let that sink in. We’re at the FINAL STAGE, and they join the call not even sure whether my work exists. From there it only got worse.
It became obvious they hadn’t properly read the brief or my submission. I was blamed for “missing” things that were literally in the document. When I tried to clarify, I was rushed and told to skip ahead. I wasn’t allowed to actually present the work I spent weeks on, which, by the way, was the entire point of the interview.
The whole call felt like they just wanted to get it over with.
Then the rejection: vague, generic, corporate nonsense. “Not satisfied.” “Not a fit.” Zero specifics. Zero actionable feedback. Just boilerplate rejection language after weeks of unpaid work.
Afterward, I complained. Only then did the interviewer admit they had skimmed the document. SKIMMED. Forty pages. Forty hours. Skimmed. And apparently that was enough to decide I wasn’t good enough.
Honestly, that tells you everything.
This process feels completely broken. It feels like candidates are pushed to the final stage just to keep the funnel moving, not because there’s real intent to evaluate them properly. The time investment expected from candidates is insane compared to the care taken on the interviewer side.
And don’t get me started on the “top 3%” branding. If this is how that bar is enforced, rushed calls, unprepared interviewers, vague rejections, then the brand is doing a LOT of heavy lifting.
I don’t think Toptal is a scam. But I do think their screening process is careless, opaque, and borderline disrespectful to experienced professionals who take the assignment seriously.
Posting this because I wish someone had been this blunt with me beforehand.
My experience was quite disappointing and I felt misled. I clearly stated before making the payment that I was looking for a developer with direct, hands-on experience on a major live crypto exchange, such as a Tier-1 exchange managing real users and funds. I was assured that this was achievable and that suitable candidates were available. However, after I made the payment and interviewed the provided candidate, it became evident that while he had a general understanding of crypto, he lacked the specific experience with major exchanges as we had agreed. When I pointed out this discrepancy, the responses from the support team slowed significantly and eventually ceased, despite the funds already being taken. This left me in the position of having to chase for answers instead of receiving the service that was promised. This issue isn't about the candidate's overall ability; it's about the mismatch between what was promised and what was delivered, compounded by inadequate communication after payment. To improve this service, I suggest being transparent about the experience that can realistically be provided. Avoid vague definitions of "exchange experience" and refrain from processing payments if the stated requirements cannot be fulfilled. Additionally, prompt responses should be prioritized when clients express valid concerns. Given this experience, I wouldn't recommend this service for anyone seeking specific, high-level, real-world expertise, especially in the crypto or fintech sectors.
My experience with Toptal has been very positive. The platform made it easy to find and work with highly qualified professionals who truly match the required skill set. The screening process and talent quality exceeded my expectations, and communication with the Toptal team was smooth and efficient throughout the engagement.The overall workflow — from talent matching to project management — was organized and transparent.
