Review Time
My husband and I were completely overwhelmed with where to begin with our front landscape design. We were partnered with Steve, and did our best to explain what we were hoping for. We left it up to him for the most part, as we figured anything that he would come up with would be a million times better than the little plant knowledge we have. Steve sent out plans in less time than was expected and they were wonderful. He clearly listened to every word said, because he translated our words flawlessly into the perfect design. He has stated that he’s there if we have any questions, or need changes, and has been extremely easy to work with. This has been a fabulous experience, and we can’t believe everything that we received with this service (we paid more for our larger size yard, plus the 2d plans so we could tackle this ourselves). The plans are clear, and will be invaluable as we do this in phases. We will definitely utilize shrub hub again for our backyard when the time comes. Thank you, Steve!
Beware: ShrubHub operates more like a bait-and-switch than a reputable business. They do not honor their guarantee, even when clearly in violation of their own terms. I spent nearly $700 on a ShrubHub design package in Aug 2025. Despite providing clear instructions about my yard’s difficult topography, the need for a retaining wall, and restrictions from a city walking path/easement, the designs I received completely ignored them. Not only was my yard magically flat, but the design had a gazebo and plantings on the city easement! The design was completely unusable. I immediately requested a refund (well within their advertised 30-day guarantee). However, after multiple emails, I’ve only received vague replies and no refund. I’ve filed a BBB complaint and a fraud claim with my bank.
I was skeptical at first, but Kevin Marino put all my apprehensions at bay. He walked me thru the whole process and I understood all the steps that would be taken moving forward. End result was magical! His ideas collaborating with mine and my wife's brought out the best image of our house and the landscape. Thank you! Kevin!!!
I ordered a Rosie the Riveter Rose bush but received a climbing rose with really huge rosehips that someone just attached a Rosie the Riveter tag to. I am a youtuber with a number of roses in my garden so I knew the rose bush they sent was not what I initially ordered...I Never received a tracking number after reaching out twice about that (with no response) the plant arrives at my door but its not a Rosie the Riveter, I email them with my complaint which they ignored initially then I threatened to report them to the BBB and all of a sudden they start responding to every email I send only not with a refund or even trying to correct the problem by sending me the rose that I paid 150+ dollars they ask for photos which I sent just for them to tell me they are investigating (meanwhile the plant is dying) shrubhubs customer service is pitiful, the item purchased also pitiful and not to mention WRONG, PPL DO NOT DO BUSINESS with this company they are the absolute WORST! But I blame myself I only looked through the reviews on shrubhubs website which are clearly sorted through by them, leaving nothing but a handful of positive reviews. Unless you just have $$$ to throw away stay as far as you possibly can from shrubhub. They are a total scam!
I wouldn't even give a 1! I wish I had read the negative reviews (which are very unlike the 5 star ratings). I uploaded the same pics to ChatGPT and got a better and complete design w/an AI pic in 5 minutes for FREE vs the one I paid several hundreds for. They only used the few hydrangea and hosta suggestions that I gave them as a border around the whole yard. They suggested I plant 5 gallon hydrangeas around the base of an existing Maple. I sent an email asking whether that would kill the roots (it would) and got no response to the question - despite paying extra for the ability to make revisions. No cut flowers, as I requested. The yard is a perfect rectangle; the "design" came back with an 8 foot bed on one side and a 10ft bed on the other. I am so disappointed! Don;t waste your money.
After our initial meeting, it took weeks to hear back from my designer. The initial rendering appeared to have been generated by AI, or someone who didn't review the numerous photos I uploaded. I decided to not proceed with the revision process knowing how slow the response time would be, hence I requested a refund. They took weeks to respond to my refund request and ultimately said I was outside the refund period. Only proceed with Shrubhub if you're willing to be held hostage to their slow design process.
Like others we were skeptical about working with Shrubhub, however for $300 or so I was willing to take the risk since we were dealing with a 3,000 square foot yard and not a national monument in Paris. Our Program Manager (PM) was Steve Maximillian and he set up an initial consultation. From the outset he was professional, prompt and focused. His questions were right on as he led us through the design phase requirements. He informed us that the design would take at least 3 weeks. During the three weeks you won’t see any back and forth emails or anything like that until the initial design is ready for you to review. For anyone reading this, the key to your design is to give the designers enough to work with – they can’t work in a vacuum, so cut them some slack because they’re not mind readers. Provide correct measurements, send them a copy of the property survey, provide plenty of photo’s on important features and take photos from every angle of your property. When you sit down via phone with your consultant/PM go over all “wants and needs” make sure you provide a budget amount that you’re shooting for. There’s a big difference in what the designers can place into your design if you have a $500 budget or a $500,000 budget. Steve provided our initial design in less than 3 weeks. It was very nice, and we requested changes to the design. Steve came back within a couple of days with an updated design, and I must say that we were impressed. Everything is laid out, the plants they recommend are spelled out in terms of where they go and quantity needed. Based on our experience I highly recommend them and can’t say enough about how professional Steve was in working with us. Thank you Steve!
Backyard design was not worth the money paid, $250 promotional pricing. The consultation over the phone was awkward— I couldn’t tell if the designer I was speaking to understood my goals by the time we got off the phone; I didn’t feel like she was listening well or had the information I’d already populated into the website in front of her. She was asking me questions that I’d answered on the website, so it felt like she was unprepared for the call. Ultimately, as I’d worried, several quirks of my yard that I’d described on the phone (including a slope) were not accounted for/incorporated in the design. The design took two weeks to produce, and by then, I only had two weeks left to request changes. The design didn’t seem like a very creative use of the space; it wasn’t a bad design, but I could have developed it with a contractor just as easily and for free. Revisions to the design took one week each and it seemed like I could only change small things— different plants or different pavers, but not a completely new concept. I was hoping that using shrubhub would do one of two things for me: 1. I would get to see my preferred aesthetic, as depicted in the inspiration photos I’d uploaded to the dashboard for the designer, applied to my own yard, OR2. I would get a perfect layout for my yard for the hardscaping, garden beds, and existing plants that is ideal for the shape and slope of the yard (in this case I could just work with the contractor to get the aesthetic right in choosing materials) But neither of these ended up being true. The designer did not seem to utilize my inspiration photos for the aesthetics/materials AND I am not thrilled with use of space the designer came up with either. Midway through, I had a new designer, and he was very nice and accommodating, but by then, we were already working from a design that was pretty far off-track and I was over it.
