I don't understand all the negative reviews. My device started malfunctioning few weeks after I received it. It was stuck in a bootloop and doing factory reset didn't help. I contacted the customer support and they told me to send it to their service center in Poland. The device's mainboard was replaced and since then it works again.
I purchased a device for university, hoping to utilize the colour e-ink technology, but it turned out to be quite disappointing. I expected a clear colour display for viewing diagrams, yet the resolution is so low that it's ineffective. The screen is excessively dark, necessitating constant frontlighting, which drains the battery rapidly (25% in just one hour). It barely lasts a day for my needs. Even more frustrating, the magnetic case included with the device interferes with the stylus functionality—you have to take off the case to use the pen correctly. (For more details, check out a YouTube video discussing the problems with the device.) CAUTION REGARDING RETURNS: Returning this item (in its original condition and packaging) would have cost me nearly 40% of the original price due to the company's return policy (customers are responsible for original delivery fees, receipt charges, and international return shipping costs). When I requested reconsideration of some of these fees, they showed no willingness to accommodate. (In contrast, another company provides a 50-day return policy with free shipping for returns...) In conclusion, I advise against purchasing this device unless you have done thorough research on its limitations and are completely certain it meets your needs.
I bought a Boox Note Air5 C for university but found the colour e-ink technology deeply disappointing. I wanted a colour display for viewing diagrams etc but the resolution is so low it's pointless. The screen is so dark that it requires constant frontlighting, which drains the battery extremely fast (25% in 1 hour). It doesn't even last one day for me. Most absurdly, the magnetic case that comes with the device causes the stylus to malfunction - you have to remove the case to use the pen properly. (Watch the YouTube video called "BOOX Note Air 5C: The 5 Problems They WON'T Tell You About" for more about the issues.)WARNING ABOUT RETURNS: Returning this device (in original condition and with original packaging) would have cost me approximately 40% of the purchase price due to Boox's return policy (customer pays original delivery fees, receipt charges, and international return shipping costs). When I asked them to reconsider some of these charges, they refused any flexibility. (Compare this to Remarkable who offer 50-day returns with free return shipping...)In summary, don't buy this device unless you've thoroughly researched and considered its limitations and you're 100% sure it's the device you want.
I rarely write reviews, but my experience with BOOX has been extremely disappointing. The customer service is absolutely terrible — unresponsive, rigid, and completely uninterested in the customer’s needs. Their only focus seems to be on charging more money, not on creating a satisfied customer. The policies are one-sided and inflexible, clearly designed to benefit the company, not the buyer. As for the device itself, it feels like something from the 1980s — very low-level technology, slow loading times, primitive interface, and outdated fonts that make reading unpleasant. The user experience is frustrating, clunky, and far below what one would expect from a supposedly “smart” e-reader in this price range.Overall, this product and the company behind it feel like a step twenty years backward in both technology and customer care.I strongly recommend considering alternatives from more reliable brands that actually care about their users.
I've had my Onyx Boox device for several years now. What a horrible pice of expensive (yes it is expensive) kit it is.I have a Microsoft One Drive cloud account. I set up a folder in that account to sync all the local work I do on my Onyx Boox. It does NOT sync!!! The contents of the folders on the One Drive do not sync down to the Onyx device. THERE IS NO LOCAL STORAGE ON THE DEVICE!!!!!!!!!!!On the home page there is an option called "Storage" You can click it but you WON'T FIND THE FOLDERS AND DOCUMENTS IN YOUR CLOUD SERVICE, THAT YOU HAVE LINKED TO, ANYWHERE TO BE FOUND. This piece of rubbish does NOT hold your work locally, so if you are out and about where you don't have access to your network, you can't open the documents you need that are in your Cloud folder!!!!There is another option on the Home Page of the device called "Notes." Once again, it does NOT sync with what you have in your Cloud folder that you have linked the device to!!!!!!!!! It should download what's online in that folder to somewhere local on the device - THAT'S WHAT SYNCING IS!!!!!!!!!!!But it doesn't do that. The manual is Zero help, and you can't even copy and paste items in your cloud folder (or even anything local) into the "Notes" or "Storage" local sections. Massively expensive for a product that doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Sure you can create a document on it, but even that is not straightforward. There are LOTS more negatives to be said about this appalling device, but enough said. You should avoid it like the plague!!!!!!!!!!
Found several dead pixels on my Tab X C - reply from Boox: Unlike LCD screens, E-Ink screens operate by manipulating pigmented polymer particles sandwiched between two layers. The top layer is transparent, reflecting light directly back to your eyes, while the bottom layer contains electrodes that arrange these particles into text and images. This technology is specifically designed to provide a paper-like reading experience, which significantly reduces eye strain. It is important to note that variations such as bright spots, white spots, or "dead" pixels can occur with this technology. These are not uncommon and are indeed found across E-Ink devices.According to the guidelines provided by the E-Ink Corporation, the pixels displayed in your device fall within acceptable operational standards. For your reference, we have attached the E-Ink company's screen standards documentation. This outlines what is considered normal variance in screen quality. We understand that you may not be satisfied with the pixel. As compensation, we are more than willing to issue a partial refund of €40 for you if you can kindly keep the device. Please let us know if this would be OK for you.
I bought the Onyx Boox 4 air from the Europe shop. After a few weeks of use the device suddenly became faulty. It was completely unresponsive. It would not respond. There was no way to reset the device. I reached out to Boox and have been exchanging several emails. They seem to have a week-long of public holidays (which I have never heard of) and response was extremely slow. After weeks of chasing they eventually asked me to ship the device to Poland and asked me to indicate a value of $70 for customs. I used DPD to send the item. Dpd promptly returned the item to me as I didn't declare it to have battery. So now I am out of pocket with £35 but I accept that is my fault. Looking at alternatives there is no way really to ship this device without being taxed etc to the repair centre. I am really disappointed with Boox. I thought initially I had a great device but they have been very unhelpful. They won't swap the faulty device. Won't help really with arranging shipping or any supper as such. Just simply emails when they feel like responding. I wasted around £600 on a device that is now just a paper weight. I do not recommend Boox as a company. Please don't use them their service is rubbish and I do not recommend them at all to anyone.
