I took flights from Brisbane to Shanghai to Tokyo. The flight from Shanghai to Tokyo was an extremely unpleasant experience. Originally intending to land in Haneda Airport at 12:30pm, the plane did not land until 4:30pm at the entirely different Narita Airport. Furthermore, after landing, since we were at an entirely different airport, we were held on the plane for a further hour and 30 minutes, without any explanation as to why we were being held on the plane.
The second bad experience was when I attempted to board and subsequently change my flight ticket. On my behalf, I was late for my plane and had missed the baggage check in time - this was entirely irrelevant to their service. However, my ensuing attempts to obtain information as to changing my flights was unsatisfactory. Repeatedly, I had enquired but was met with the same response, to contact my travel agent, which I did and they had then granted permission to China Eastern to manage my flight bookings. I returned to the desk once again and was told instead this time to book online, furthered by their explanation that they were unable to contact service to help me book the flights. I would not recommend flying with China Eastern if you only speak English, the process is far more difficult and you are much more likely to be turned down as they falter with their English communication.
Traveled twice last year to London through Shanghai in Business class. Overall, it was a positive experience for the price. The crew was very skilled and communicated well in English, which hasn't always been the case. The lounge in Shanghai was excellent, and the airport was quite empty, giving a sense of exclusivity. Although the lounge staff seemed reluctant about shower requests, a bit of persistence helped. The Airbus A350 was relatively new and comfortable.

I experienced a stressful check-in with this airline for the flight from Shanghai to Buenos Aires. The staff incorrectly directed me to a non-official transit visa website and charged me excessive fees for a visa I didn't require. I later learned that I only needed an official visa from the government site at a much lower cost. The airline should enhance staff training on visa requirements and direct passengers only to official resources. I spent the entire afternoon trying to resolve this issue, and the staff struggled to assist and communicated poorly. I had to conduct my own research to avoid missing my flight.
Excellent service, pricing, and staff during my flight to Tokyo via Shanghai. The transfer in Shanghai was smooth. While the food may not be on par with Western airlines, it likely caters to the preferences of local passengers. The airline's website was challenging to navigate, but booking through a third-party platform was straightforward.

Avoid flying with this airline or any other carrier from that region! I have never faced such an ordeal. My booking was made nearly three months in advance, only to have one of the return flights canceled just three weeks before departure due to government mandates. I have spent countless hours with the support team trying to find a reasonable solution, but they have been unhelpful and dismissive of my rights as a passenger. If they had attempted to resolve the issue reasonably, I would have been more forgiving. However, they clearly do not care about their customers. Many airlines may try to bypass your rights, but few will cancel your flight due to political reasons. Avoid booking with them at all costs.
The aircraft was uncomfortably hot, and they sprayed chemicals on our bags and us. The instructions for the in-flight Wi-Fi were only in the local language, making it impossible to connect. I strongly advise against choosing this airline; they are not worth the trouble.
