Review Time
I would have previously given a 5 star review for Airtime Rewards, but the recent changes to the programme has left me an unhappy ‘customer’.
It should be easy. You spend money with a retailer and get cashback. No doubt Airtime are receiving a cut too, but ultimately we are getting something back.
I have also signed up to provide my financial data through their UP programme for an extra financial boost. Data has a worth in the world as we all know and this is again going to benefit Airtime if we supply this important information.
I cannot use my earnings toward my phone bill as there are only a small number of networks given as a payout option out of the many available in the UK.
So the next choice would be to take the ‘Pay into my bank account’ route. This now is only available in £10 increments and has a £1.30 (13%) charge for each £10 withdrawal. This is annoying when I know that Airtime have already likely profited from directing sales to retailers and from the use of my data.
I was also under the impression that, in the UK, companies are generally prohibited from charging extra fees for payments made by standard bank transfer (Faster Payments) or debit/credit cards, under the Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012.
It looks to me like Airtime join the long list of businesses damaging their reputation, citing ‘exciting changes’ to their rules and more transparency, while obviously making the changes for the benefit of nobody but themselves.
These days, people are not as slow to question when they feel they’re being taken advantage of.
I appreciate the idea and see potential. I've managed to save around £10 annually, but it requires careful planning. The idea is straightforward: link your bank cards, shop as usual, and earn rewards, yet… In practice, it's somewhat restrictive and confusing. Retailers and terms keep changing. There are too many online-only offers, which negatively impacts physical stores. Most discounts are minimal (under 4% unless you purchase very high-value gift cards). Each retailer has different terms and conditions, making it challenging to strategize purchases. I'd prefer a more straightforward and consistent reward system, but I understand that might not align with retailers' goals to highlight various promotions at different times. They have recently added more retailers, which is a positive development.
The support team fails to acknowledge my replies to my concerns, claiming I haven't responded and continuously closing cases. My funds are not being deposited into my account. I've requested a phone call since emailing has proven ineffective, but they declined and offered no further assistance. They mentioned a payment to confirm my address, which I've attempted multiple times, but they keep closing the ticket prematurely, forcing me to restart the process. This situation increasingly feels like a scam, and despite clearly stating my complaint, I have received no acknowledgment.
It was wonderful when the withdrawal fees to card were not an exorbitant 13% for users with unsupported service providers. Gift card purchases no longer contribute to monthly challenges, making it hard to earn anything substantial. Users might only earn a small amount after significant effort.
They refuse to acknowledge my responses to concerns, claiming I haven't replied and closing cases. My funds aren't being credited to my account. I asked for a call since emailing is ineffective, but they declined and provided no further help. They mentioned making a payment to confirm my address, which I've tried multiple times, but they keep closing the ticket, forcing me to start over. This feels increasingly like a scam, and despite expressing my complaint, there’s been no acknowledgment.
I've used the app successfully for a while, and it was fantastic at first. Occasionally, I face fees to withdraw my funds to card. I recently referred a friend who cannot withdraw their money at all, which reflects poorly on my recommendation. My main concern is the different reward percentages; some users receive 7% back at retailers while I only get 2% for the same retailer, leading to vastly different experiences.
The service is slowly deteriorating for several reasons. The app was initially promoted as logging your card and letting them handle the rest, but now there are more online-only discounts. You must verify if the retailer is online or in-store and what payment methods they accept. Some retailers only accept specific payment types, which complicates the experience.
