I’m writing to express my disappointment with Auto-Owners Insurance following a series of claims and the way our account was handled afterward. Over the past several years we experienced: (1) a collision in which we were not at fault, (2) an accident where my wife struck a deer that ran into the roadway, and (3) a minor incident where our 7-year-old opened a car door and accidentally nicked a nearby vehicle.
After these events, we were dropped, and our homeowners insurance premium increased dramatically—by nearly $3,000 per year—from approximately $2,200 to over $5,900. While I understand that insurers evaluate risk and adjust pricing, the outcome felt disproportionate given the circumstances, particularly the not-at-fault collision and the deer strike.
Most concerning was the lack of clear, timely communication. We did not receive adequate explanation of the decisions being made, what options were available to us, or what to expect next. The process was frustrating and left us feeling unsupported at a time when we needed straightforward guidance.
Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Auto-Owners to anyone who values transparent communication and fair, consistent treatment after filing claims.

Frustrating Experience with Insurance After Accident

On March 26, 2024, my well-maintained vehicle was struck while legally parked in a designated spot by an elderly driver who clearly poses a risk. The impact caused considerable damage and moved my car over a foot. The driver fled the scene, but fortunately, a witness provided me with her license plate. I contacted my insurance company and was assigned a claims adjuster named Gina. From the outset, she was unhelpful. When I shared the license plate details to help locate the driver, Gina dismissed it as unimportant and showed reluctance to pursue the matter. After more than a month of my own efforts, I managed to identify the driver, including her address and insurance details—tasks that should have been handled by Gina. Eventually, she provided incorrect information to the driver’s insurance adjuster, claiming my car was fully repaired and the damages amounted to only $2500, even before repairs were initiated. This led to delays in compensation from the other insurance company. Without my diligence, my insurance would not have recovered any funds for damages I had partially covered. I gathered evidence, including video footage and police reports, and shared all details with Gina, who confirmed she had everything necessary. I paid for the repairs entirely out of pocket, totaling $7159.45, contrary to her claims of over $8000. Despite the shop manager's attempts to clarify my situation with her, Gina continued to assert that I would not be reimbursed for the full amount. The leadership of the insurance company seems unaware of how poorly their clients are treated, and I hope they become aware of this injustice. Instead of being appreciated for my loyalty as a client, I feel cheated and penalized by my own insurance provider.

Exceptional service and reliable adjusters.

I used this insurance for storm damage claims on two properties, each over $25,000. They were responsive and easy to work with. In contrast, my experience with another major insurer was a complete disaster. The adjuster from that company was hard to reach and caused significant delays. However, the adjusters from this company were fantastic! They processed my claim and issued payment within two days of submission, which was incredible and allowed me to close on one of the properties on time. Thank you to the adjusters for their outstanding support!

Predatory practices by the insurance company.

The insurance company sent me an audit notice threatening a 50% premium increase unless I provided detailed records of every payment to my subcontractors from the previous year. This requirement was not disclosed when I applied. They gave me less than 30 days to comply or face collections. My broker confirmed that I was within the projected subcontractor usage for the year. In my 15 years of business, no other insurer has made such a demand; they typically only ask for total gross receipts. This feels like a bait-and-switch tactic targeting small businesses that lack the resources to fulfill such requests. I am the sole employee of my company and cannot manage this level of detail. This erroneous charge needs to be reversed.

The leadership at the company seems unaware of the poor treatment clients receive. Instead of appreciation for my loyalty, I feel cheated by my own insurance.

Highly unethical practices.

Having worked in the commercial insurance sector for years, I find this company to be one of the most unethical I've encountered. Their claims team lacks professionalism, and managers rarely respond to calls. I would strongly advise against using this company.

My recent experience with this insurance company has been the worst I've had with any organization. Even with clear fault in an accident, the process has been filled with delays and poor communication. I reached out multiple times but received only generic responses. The claims representative was often unresponsive, leaving me feeling disregarded. After facing numerous obstacles, I've decided to escalate my concerns directly to their policyholder. My expectation for a straightforward claims process following an accident was far from reality.

Incompetent claims management.

If a driver with this insurance hits your vehicle, brace yourself for frustration. The claims center seems to prioritize mediocrity, and communication is lacking. Voicemails from staff indicate they may not be available, and calls often go unanswered. The process is painfully slow, and they seem to treat the insured party as if at fault. You might be better off dealing with your own insurance.

Extremely disappointing.

As a local contractor working with a well-known retailer, I've dealt with many insurance companies regarding storm damage claims. This company is by far the worst. They deny valid claims and push customers to use third-party vendors for replacements. They seem determined to avoid paying out claims, regardless of the extent of the damage. If you're considering a new policy or are with this insurer and haven't filed a claim yet, I urge you to reconsider.
