AVOID THIS RENTAL SERVICE.

AVOID THIS RENTAL SERVICE. As many others have pointed out, this company engages in a deceitful insurance practice. I made a reservation through a third-party platform under one name, only to be redirected to a distant shuttle location for another. This name change was my first warning. Upon reaching the site, they claimed my digital credit card was "invalid" for the deposit, even though it works everywhere else. I proposed several reasonable alternatives to secure the deposit: I suggested using the physical credit card of the second driver who was with me. I offered to change the main driver to the second driver to utilize a physical card. The representative rejected EVERY option. They intentionally blocked all avenues to compel me into purchasing their local insurance for €292.50, which was nearly DOUBLE the cost of the entire 9-day rental (€150). The ultimate indication of their dishonesty: they asserted their terminal "couldn't process" my digital card for a deposit, yet they were able to use that SAME terminal to charge my card for the insurance. They trap you at a remote location via shuttle and then take advantage of you. This is not a legitimate car rental; it is a coercive sales tactic. Protect your finances and your holiday—choose a reputable service at the airport instead.

Lack of Compliance - No Tool Bag Provided for Tyre Change

Lack of compliance - no tool bag was provided for the tyre change. We experienced a flat tyre while driving and had to signal another vehicle for assistance, which was extremely unsafe, especially with my pregnant partner in the car. Additionally, we booked a specific vehicle but received a different one, and all the instructions in the car were in a foreign language. Moreover, common sense seemed to be absent when we faced an issue. It wasn't the fault of the representative at the desk, but it appeared they had no authority to make decisions. They were bound to follow the head office's slow email instructions, which were difficult to reach. There's a reason why the service is offered at a low price.

Non compliant, Not Safe, Poor Customer Care

Non compliant - tool bag not provided for tyre change. Tyre went flat on drive to Wanaka… had to signal another car on side of the road to help us. Extremely unsafe with my pregnant wife in the car.On top of that we booked a Mazda and got provided a Toyota…all instructions and screen in the car was Chinese. Also common sense did not prevail when we had an issue…No fault of the operator at the desk, seems like no he has no power to make decisions. Instead following the instructions of head office, only via email and slow to respond and impossible to reach.Cheap is cheap for a reason.

Do Not Rent From This Company!

Do Not Rent From This Company!Nothing but a scam! Left waiting for shuttle after being told wait was 5 mins. Showed up 30 mins later. Upon arrival at their off airport site that's when things got worse. They were trying to tell me I needed to pay for sun pass $15 daily plus other fees. They would not honour my extended insurance for car rentals. Wanted full insurance package from them.I cancelled and left immediately.Wasted 2 hrs of my time and ended up having to Uber to out hotel. Stay away from Autounion!

This is the worst car rental experience…

*AUCKLAND*This is the worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. I wish I could give 0 stars. When we arrived to pick up the car, the staff were rude and completely ignored us for about 30 minutes. Only after that did they tell us to scan a QR code and complete forms that took a long time — something they could have asked us to do while we were waiting. Because of this poor service, we ended up being there for over an hour for a simple pick-up.I booked through Booking.com and paid around $350 upfront for the 6-day rental and insurance. Before I even returned the car, AutoUnion had already taken another $313.57 from my account without asking. This included $140 for an extra 12 hours I never approved, $135.80 for insurance even though I already paid Booking.com for it, and a $54.70 early-morning drop-off fee that was never mentioned at pick-up.When I questioned these charges, they accused me of “holding the car illegally” and threatened to charge a further $25 per hour until the car was returned. That would have made it $350 on top of the $140 they already charged me, meaning I would have paid $490 for only 14 extra hours — despite finding a similar car elsewhere for $70. Their behaviour was aggressive, dismissive and completely unreasonable.Total money taken from them for a 7 day car rental of a very old Toyota Corolla is currently $665 (should have only been $350) and they are still holding a $500 bond. Will update if they continue stealing money without permission. Please read the other low reviews — many customers report the exact same issues. There is a clear pattern of forced insurance, hidden fees, unauthorised charges and bonds being held with no explanation. Their responses on Google and via email are defensive and show no interest in resolving problems or providing proper customer service. For comparison, earlier this year I rented through Discount Car Rentals and had zero issues. Everything was smooth, transparent and exactly what you’d expect from a professional rental company.AutoUnion’s behaviour feels predatory and unprofessional. I strongly recommend avoiding them.

Weighing it up…

My plane was late so I missed the last shuttle for pick up-should have rung them on landing and they may have waited. Was the last shuttle of the day (close 7pm) so I had to uber. I rang and they said they would wait for me. The car was very cheap ($110) and met my needs for a 4-day stay in Auckland. Didn't realise there was a $500 bond. Drop off was a bit stressful-I got lost trying to find their site- but when I rang the guy talked me through directions he was very patient even though obviously busy. Lots of people there when I dropped car off but was just able to give them to the guy out front- who was very friendly and helpful. Only just managed to get on the last shuttle as it was full-to make it to check my bag 8 mins before closing- when they suggest to drop off early-take their word on that! They are refunding my bond, so weighing it all up I would use them again. But just be more aware of possible delays that could impact

Our rental experience was a nightmare…

Our rental experience was an absolute nightmare. It started with a no-show for our airport pickup, leaving us waiting 30 minutes after calling. When we finally arrived, they didn't have the car we booked and stuck us with a smaller downgrade. The worst part was the replacement car: two days later, it had a dead battery and stranded us remotely. The company refused to help, forcing us to get a jump and drive 3 hours non-stop to return it. They claimed to fix it, but the light came back on the very next day.The final replacement car was the last straw: police stopped us and revealed the company had provided an expired registration, months out of date! We were nearly left without a vehicle due to the company's severe negligence. This entire ordeal was stressful, unsafe, and completely unacceptable.

Absolute bait and switch scam

Absolute bait and switch scam. They lowball the Car Rental price and get you in the door to pay an exorbitant fee for their toll transponder and tell you it’s mandatory. My car rental reservation was $125. The ‘required’ transponder was $450-$750 with 3 convenient options! 5-7x more than the car rental.

Lamentable

I booked a car from October 20 to 28 at Rome airport agency. You had our flight number and arrival time. When we arrived at the counter, the agent told us that we were late and that the car had been rented to someone else. Our son is in a wheelchair, we were the last to leave the plane with assistance, we waited a long time for our luggage, and the airport is large and unfamiliar to us. Yes, it took us a long time to arrive, but this must happen often. We found ourselves in a really difficult situation. Your agent offered us another car for €495. We had no choice, so I accepted. I don't speak English very well, and neither does he, but I made sure that was the total price. Today, I've been charged €495, as well as €230 for the first rental. I really feel like I've been ripped off. What's more, the car was covered in dents, the seats were burnt and full of holes, and the tank wasn't full. I have this strange feeling that the agent gave me his own car.
