After five years with a Bosch Benchmark built-in dishwasher (38 dB, top-control), I ultimately decided not to repair it and instead switched to a Fisher & Paykel 24" Professional Series Double DishDrawer. The Bosch excelled in quiet operation, generous capacity, interior lighting, a large filter, a third rack, and strong overall cleaning power. However, long cycle times, inconsistent drying, and plastic items warping over time detracted from the experience. The decisive factor, though, was a known issue with this model: the door does not always seal properly, leading to water leaks. Bosch provided an estimate of between $850 and $1,500 to address the problem. Living in a condo and routinely running the dishwasher unattended while at work, I could not justify the cost—or the ongoing risk of water leaking into the unit below.The Fisher & Paykel Double DishDrawer takes a very different approach, one that suits condo living particularly well. Its intuitive controls, excellent drying performance, gentle treatment of plastics, fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, and ease of loading and unloading make it far more pleasant to use day to day. It is noisier than the Bosch—especially the bottom drawer—but much of this comes down to loading technique. Once you learn how to load it properly, noise drops significantly and becomes a non-issue in everyday use.Criticisms about water spotting are generally fair, but in my experience they are limited to a small number of washable bakeware items, which are arguably not ideal candidates for dishwasher cleaning in the first place due to soap residue. Keeping the rinse-aid reservoir topped up with a good-quality product makes a noticeable difference, as does detergent choice. While powdered detergent is recommended, tablets also work well. I’ve found that not all soaps perform equally, and Nelly’s, in both powder and solid tablet form, has become my go-to. I also noticed that Fisher & Paykel is launching its own line of dishwasher detergent, which I’m eager to try.My criticisms of the Fisher & Paykel are limited but worth noting. First, the cutlery basket could benefit from a redesign. When the optional dishwasher-tab drawer is added, the top of the basket no longer snaps securely into place and feels flimsy. Second, Bosch’s rack-mounted clips—useful for securing glasses or utensils that tend to flip during the wash—are noticeably absent, and this is an area where Fisher & Paykel could clearly improve. Third, while the top drawer includes interior lighting, the bottom drawer does not, and adding a light there would greatly improve visibility when loading or unloading. Finally, the machine would benefit from a true built-in delayed-start function rather than requiring the app to manually trigger a wash remotely.Despite these shortcomings, the Double DishDrawer has proven to be the more practical and reassuring choice for how I actually live. For condo use in particular—where reliability and peace of mind matter as much as performance—it has been the better overall fit.
