The software has a friendly interface, well organized and easy to operate. I had no technical errors during all process and it worked fast. I got relevant emails notifications about my process and I felt confident about it. It was my very first IRS tax and I will absolutely recommend it.
The tax software recommended a path that would lead to a IRS tax penalty (FEIE vs. FTC) and now I likely have to undertake corrective withdraws of my Roth IRA contributions and earnings. When I tried to reach out and ask why the software chose this path when I inputted all of my Roth contributions with no flags, I was told I needed to upgrade to a more expensive package if I wanted any advice. Turbo tax and other softwares have baked in safeguards to avoid causing people to unnecessarily commit tax penalties and I was really disappointed in both the fact expat taxes recommended the wrong path and then tried to nickel and dime me when I tried to get clarity or help from them. I am still trying to seek help.EDIT: The CEO personally reached out and acknowledged the issue and worked to find a specific amendment to right this issue. Truly appreciate the professionalism and prompt work by the leadership of this organization.
As an expat with relatively modest income and assets, the process was smooth and straightforward but felt expensive and long compared to non-expat tax services. You really feel the pricetag of accessing "expert expat" tax knowledge. I think the service is much more worth it if you have complicated assets abroad and/or have a relatively high income.
It was interesting experience to file taxes online. My federal taxes was successfully filed. However, state taxes are still pending since last week in queue. It's almost tax deadline and I am hoping to cross the finish line. The pricing in pounds or euro isn't what I had in mind for US currency. I think it's too expensive.
