Review Time
We are on the final day of what has to be the best holiday we have ever had. Stephen at Selective Asia managed to interpret our needs perfectly and create for us an experience of a lifetime travelling through Vietnam and Cambodia. The holiday has been a hit from start to finish. To start with Stephen took on board our budget and tailors a holiday that net it perfectly. All of the hotels have been excellent. The guides in each area have been first rate and we have felt confident all the way through that Selective Asia have covered all eventualities and have been on hand to guide us through this amazing experience. We will most definitely be going back to Selective Asia to help us experience more of this wonderful continent
Trip to Vietnam in 2010 was arranged by Lionel. Probability the best holiday we've ever been on. Excellent service start to finish. Great local staff on resort especially Hanoi - Long was a superstar. The experience was 5* from start to finish, nothing was too much trouble,both at home or whilst on location. Would totally travel with Selective Asia again!
We had to cancel our June trip to Japan due to COVID19 - Andrew and several of his colleagues have been first class in their communication and trying to find various solutions. We had to wait a while due to their ticket office in India (I think!) being closed, however overall I can't fault Selective Asia's communication and efforts during what were clearly very challenging times.
Kate did a great job when we had to cancel our holiday to Indonesia due to Covid. She was always available to speak and was very flexible in finding a solution that worked best for us. We’re now looking forward to a similar trip to Vietnam early next year due to it having better weather in the Easter holidays.
Selective Asia have been great during some very challenging times. They have taken a very personal approach and kept us updated throughout for which we have been very grateful. A lot of work went into planning our holiday (this was to be our 3rd with the company) and we are looking forward to making it to the Maldives in 2021 rather than August 2020!
The planning of our trip was managed incredibly well and I am sure that we would have had a fabulous two weeks in Vietman. However Covid19 happened and I am appalled at the way Selective Asia have conducted themselves. When you book a package holiday and it is cancelled for reasons beyond your control such as this, you are entitled in law to a full refund from your holiday company. Selective Asia acknowledged this but told us they could not afford to refund everyone and would only offer us what they could get back from their suppliers or to reschedule (we would have to pay any increase in cost). We were initially offered less than half our money back with a flight voucher that we simply didn't want. We reached a stale mate until eventually I threatened to take legal action against the company. We were then offered a settlement that refunded around 85% of what we paid. We accepted this in order to draw a line under it. For the reviewer below me, your travel insurance is not obliged to refund a package holiday in these circumstances, your holiday company is obliged in law to provide you with a full refund. I really regret booking with Selective Asia as the other company we nearly booked with have followed the law and refunded all of their customers in full.
It seems strange reviewing a holiday company for a holiday you didn't get to go on but these are strange times. We first used Selective Asia for our honeymoon back in 2011. They had been recommended by a colleague and we had a superb time from booking to coming home, so when we had a little money for a trip to Sri Lanka - and now with two young kids in tow we decided to approach them. Firstly they are the only company who quoted us a holiday within the budget we'd set. Every other company out there went significantly over our (already generous) budget. Our expert Andrew, listened carefully to what we wanted and took into consideration the age of our children and put together a superb itinerary. We booked back in September 2019 and looked forward to our trip Easter 2020. Fast forward 6 months and Coronavirus comes and changes the world. So, my 5 star review is not based on our holiday as following FCO guidance, it was cancelled, but on the way Selective Asia has treated us. They have kept us informed and educated through out the process. They have called me regularly (unlike my insurer who I will deal with in a very different review) and spoke to me as an individual and as a valued customer. A long story short - our insurer won't pay out - playing off on an technicality of an EU directive and whilst I continue to pursue them Selective Asia have done everything in their power to recoup our funds. The fact is we will have lost money on this - however it's nothing compared to what so many people are going through today. Whilst my multi million pound insurance agency might point the finger of responsibility to my travel agent - morally this just feels wrong - to expect a small business to cover these losses seems to defeat the point of having insurance. So whilst I didn't get my holiday - or all my money back (so far - I'm not giving up on my insurer yet) - I honestly can't say a bad word about Selective Asia and in particular Andrew our consultant and when the world gets back to normal - they will be my first port of call. Their customer service has been superb. None of us were prepared for Coronavirus and there is much out our control right now - however we can control how we behave and treat one another during this time - and with that in mind it can only be 5 stars.
We travelled to Laos in February 2010 with these guys and the level of service was very high throughout. The website is excellent and the sales team really knew their stuff. Once in Laos the country itself did much of the work (if you haven't do!) but the guides and itinerary also paid their part. Good work
