Overall Square is a great service. I get what I need and feel confident that I can grow my business and be supported by this platform. I would like for the fees to be a little less aggressive for smaller businesses who need the extra $$ to continue to grow.
I have been with Square for nearly 12 years and have been subject to rising prices despite the fact that I am already paying not only for POS services but also for payroll and marketing. In addition they have now made it almost mandatory that you have to buy their hardware. The latest gouging that has happened is their charging for loading gift cards. I use gift cards as a way for supporting local charities and I also pay quite a lot for the cards themselves. I wouldn't mind so much if within a week, Square went down as it does not infrequently and in offline mode, gift cards cannot be used. A few months ago we lost Square for 2 days and everything we did was offline and we lost money from declined transactions. Does Square compensate us for the loss in revenue or the fact that our gift card customers walk away upset. No of course they don't. They are not interested anymore in looking after their initial customers like myself who are the reason they became successful in the first place. I received an email this morning telling me that I would get $1,000 for referring a customer. If they can afford to give away $1,000 to us for conning other people into thinking Square is an excellent company, they can stop continually adding more and more cost to running a small business like mine. Although I am somewhat trapped by having invested in Square systems, I am contemplating spending thousands of dollars to move to another system run by people who are interested in my business rather than simply interested in how much money they can squeeze out of me.
What I like about Square: I like that payments are transferred to my bank in a reasonable amount of time. I like the card reader, which has the convenient "tap to pay" feature. It was very easy to set up my invoices, logo, service list, etc, on the Square online site. What I don't like: The fees are higher than other payment systems. They have a clause in the Terms of Service, "Except where prohibited by law, you may not, nor may you permit any third party, directly or indirectly, to: use the Services for the sale of firearms, firearm parts, ammunition, weapons or other devices designed to cause physical harm;" I am only using Square until I can find a more reasonable company who can process cards in the field.
The item was ordered to be a birthday present and was ordered 10 days before. It was disappointing the item was then 4 days later than the birthday. If it had been expected to be 2 weeks delivery that would have been fine but it showed as expected on the 27th Mar.
