beehiiv is the best newsletter platform on the market. I constantly recommend it to others because they listen to their users and are really tapped into their needs right now. Though it's new compared to platforms like Kit or Substack, its evolution and new features continue to impress me. If you're looking to build a media business, beehiiv should be your first and only choice.
I subscribed to beehiiv's Scale plan at $169/month. Without any warning, explanation, or prior notice, my account was deactivated — yet beehiiv continued charging me $169 every month regardless.
When I tried to cancel the subscription, I discovered there is no cancellation button anywhere in the account settings. The option simply does not exist. I am being charged for a service I cannot access and cannot cancel.
Their support was completely unhelpful and provided no resolution. This is a deliberate dark pattern — they deactivate your account while keeping the billing running, and make cancellation impossible by design.
As an EU customer, this violates:
EU Directive 2011/83/EU — the right to cancel digital subscriptions
EU Directive 2005/29/EC — hiding a cancel button is an illegal unfair commercial practice
Basic consumer rights — charging for a deactivated, inaccessible account is fraud
I have been forced to file a PayPal dispute, report them to Stripe as a fraudulent merchant, and escalate to EU consumer protection authorities just to stop being charged.
This is not a platform — it is a billing trap. They take your money, deactivate your account, and make it impossible to leave. Zero stars if I could.
I recently migrated my 13k list to beehiiv from Buttondown (I started my newsletter business at Substack). I am impressed by the way the onboarding went - I had a very particular problem with link shortening, and the team was very helpful in resolving it.
On top of that, when I emailed one of the co-founders, Tyler, he replied and helped me resolve the challenges also giving me some tips in the process: I felt appreciated as a customer. I am really looking forward to growing together with them.

They promote a custom website and user-friendly website builder as part of the free plan, which seems like a logical starting point before deciding whether to invest $500 per year for the first paid tier. The website builder is extremely poor, to say the least. I was experimenting with it to understand its functionality and added a section to the homepage to see how it appeared. However, when I tried to remove that section, it was impossible. I could remove everything else on the page without issue, which is just laughable. Additionally, creating a support ticket on a free plan isn't an option, leaving you to converse with an AI bot that repeatedly refers you to the same knowledge base, forcing you to search for how to delete a section on your webpage—something that should be a fundamental feature. I was genuinely excited about this platform and eager to get started. While some technical issues are expected, encountering such a basic problem is unacceptable. As a customer, it raises the question: "Will it be this much of a hassle once I upgrade? Is this a feature reserved for paying users?" Overall, it's utterly disappointing and pathetic.
I faced some challenges while assembling my newsletter, but a quick message to the support team got me back on track! The problem was with inserting an image, but the support team replied promptly and guided me effectively. Thank you!
I transitioned from another platform to this service, left for a bit, and then returned to the Max plan. My decision to come back speaks volumes: the team's support and the product's innovation have been pivotal for my business growth.
