The planning and information about the tour in the first instance was efficient and helpful. Clarity re what was included, what level of fitness was required etc. This tour extended from Helsinki Finland to Prague Czech Republic. We had a beautiful Latvian guide with lived experience, willing to share her family’s stories and experiences. She gave a real feeling to the life of Latvians and other Baltic countries under Soviet occupation. She also had the most beautiful understanding of Latvian folk music and sang some very special songs to us. It was one of my highlights. Specialist guides also engaged with us in other countries, providing their insights also. We had an itinerary but also quite a bit of free time and flexibility. Some great stops in smaller towns as well. Loved this tour so much and the small group was a manageable size. It is clear that large groups cannot have the same detail and intimacy that a smaller group offers. Prague was so busy - we arrived on a Friday which i think was to our detriment as it seemed quieter and less overwhelming by Sunday. If i were to change anything it would be to arrive in Prague mid week.
Having done several trips with Bunnik I have always found all the staff very helpful and efficient. Tours are always well constructed, interesting and include places and experiences other tours do not. Accommodations and transport are also very good. I always recommend Bunnik as I have travelled with other providers but have found Bunnik to be the best.
Day of the Dead tourTheir itinerary was misleading. It stated there would be challenging days of walking and omitted that there would be long days of driving. If we would have known this upfront, we would have given further consideration to whether or not to book the tour.I calculated that we sat in the bus for over 50 hours of our holiday which is totally excessive was a high proportion of our waking time. With this volume of travel on an uncomfortable bus that had seen better days, the tour became a trial of endurance! We had almost no free time and arrived late in almost every town we visited. We were supposed to arrive in Oaxaca to visit the cemetery but arrived there at 10:30pm after more than 9 hours of travel. We missed the highlighted tour of a graveyard. The excuse was that it was normal to have heavy traffic at that time. They should have allowed for this in their itinerary given the theme of the trip was supposed to be all about the Day of the Dead. The hotel we stayed in was miles from anywhere and of a poor standard as well. The sites we saw throughout Mexico were incredible and well worth visiting and we are very happy that we had the opportunity to see them. However, as the tour was an ordeal and allowed us minimal free time. This detracted from the experience and severely impacted our enjoyment of the tour. It must also be noted that this was supposed to be a holiday for us and not the expedition it turned out to be. I would recommend going to Mexico but, as they say, "It's who you go with" - DON'T go with Bunnik!
We booked our tour directly with Bunnik [not through a third party travel agent] and Lucky could not have been more helpful. He arranged for flights to accommodate our requests. We did not have to stick to a "one size fits all" situation. He has been happy to answer any questions I had.
