I know now why it's called 'kickstarter' as I immediately started kicking myself when the fan i funded turned up at the end of the summer, and the following year they started turning up on the shelf of my local supermarket for half of the price i paid.
In theory the idea of Kickstarter is a good one but in practice I have my concerns. In the past year I backed three items. One, after 9 months has not been shipped. Another item arrived but was poorly designed and does not do what it was supposed too.Third item was a watch that was pretty but used the cheapest Chinese movement possible and it was an existing retailer simply marketing a product not trying to get a new business started on introduce a new product line.About $500 wasted. Will not be fooled again.
Kickstarter=Casino. It's that simple.if ,and I stress,if...the project you supported materialize then you may get the product. However it's just like putting all chips on one number on roulette table..if you loose ,and many many many have lost, the house does not cover your loses.
I backed a promising project three years ago on their platform (the Hover 2 drone). After almost a year it became abundantly clear that the project creators had blatantly lied about their capabilities and progress from the get go, so I got a refund and reported the project to Kickstarter. They gave me a generic response saying they'd look into it (I know many people who pulled out early also made claims online of reporting this project). This project in particular raised over 1 MILLION dollars, and didn't deliver the promised product. This was clearly a funding scam ran by this company to just raise capitol to pocket for themselves, as three years later they still haven't delivered. The serious issue here is that they have faced NO repurcussions from Kickstarter. Kickstarter is clearly happy to ignore scams and ponzi schemes that occur on their site daily as long as they get their cut of the money. Kickstarter was a really novel idea, but it has fully divulged into mostly scams and grifts. The fact that they continually ignore projects that are blatant money grabs, scams, and money laundering schemes that take hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in shows that they are complicit in those actions.
