Review Time
My books did not arrive when they were suppose to. When they did arrive, the quality was adequate at best. Also, there are two title pages when I only approved one. Having the extra page increased the cost of the book. Now, I am still waiting to receive my promotional items. They were supposed to be mailed out Feb. 2023, it is not June 2023. Lastly, when I inquired to see if any of my books have sold and when I should receive a check, that's when I was told about registering with Author Center. They explained that I will not receive any money until I do this.So far I am not sold. I paid for a lot of things that I am not getting, or I have to call the company and hunt the items down. But they are always asking me to spend more money on a new book, when they can't provide what I purchased with my current book.I am praying that things get better.
As a green, beginning author I was more than happy when Xlibris wanted to publish my first two books HAMLET IN BALTIMORE and ALEX AND THE AMAZING CATVENTURES.I never even heard of BBB or Trustpilot reviews and ratings. (lowest ratings) I was given a "Discounted price" but was told I also MUST purchase various additional items like subscription to a magazine which features review of books etc.Xlibiris promised to do publish the a manuscripts that i submitted that and my own illustrations by Michael Wittman. I waited for the proofread copy which was done by a number of people (did the first editors quit?)Hamlet was published and a number friends and family members purchased it .Then I started receiving =emails from the readers. They all loved the book but complained about the number of major grammatical errors.English is my 4th language so I expected that Xlibris will, during proofreading and editing make the necessary correctionsI paid Xlibris again for reprinting and was sent a number of costly propositions for advertising but no royalties. The company claimed that no copies were sold. ALL IN ALL I SPENT about $20,000. Even when I sent the a printout of the sales sheet from Amazon there were no royalties paid. I had to contact other companies to correct and reprint my books. That was my retirement money.
Honestly it’s not that good if a service. Every aspect is put back on the writer for approvals by a different department. Why would I pay for editing of grammar and punctuation and then have it sent back to me for approval ? That means I have to read the entire manuscript again and hopefully catch any mistakes This is what I was paying for someone else to handle. It’s just to much back amd forth. It would be nice to just have it all handled professionally. And the extra marketing sells are cheesy wity the approach after the fact.

The only times where I find it difficult to use Xlibris were when I did not understand or use the instructions and when my budget was holding me back.For all the staff that I got to meet via e-mail my admiration, especially the Editorial staff because English is not my first language, but 66 years of practice.Kind regardsChristian P.J. Xlibris gave me an excellent package for getting my book published. They do not provide context editing but do provide copy editing but you must read their galleys carefully so they miss things. You get two reviews as part of the package. The formatting was well done and turn around time was good. The package includes author copies of paperback, hard copy and ebook and they make books available through book wholesalers and online BUT they will plague you with hard sell tactics. Be prepared and decide what you want to spend on marketing, then hold your ground. Get what you paid for. Their sales reps will try to confuse you saying they provide say books for free that are part of your contract.
