Dollar Car Rental / Hertz is a GARBAGE. The Orlando Sanford International Airport location is a perfect example of how SHITTY this company is.

It took us over half an hour dealing with an incompetent girl to get a rental car, and we needed assistance from the local police. In the end, we switched to AVIS, which was the same price AND took less than 5 minutes to rent a car.

Long story short. We made a reservation a week before the trip to the SFB airport in Orlando, FL for a mid-size SUV. However... once we arrived to Dollar kiosk, the girl with a teenage face told us that they had no car available at the rate we rented the car for. She told us with a smile that for an extra $35 daily, she can upgrade us to a Volvo. We declined and asked for a manager's assistance - she refused to call the manager. We asked for help renting a more affordable car, as they advertise - she refused. We asked again for the manager - she said that he is not present.

We did create a new reservation online. The audacity in Dollar Car rental must be on sale, because she refused to further assist us and asked us to leave, but this time - we REFUSED. This immature girl called 911, and an officer had to come and explain to her how to do her job. She almost cried. My wife, meanwhile, made a reservation at AVIS, and after a half-hour nightmare at Dollar / Hertz Rental in SFB, we got a car in a few minutes from AVIS.

When we were leaving Dollar / Hertz Car Rental and the officer left, the girl was screaming at us that I can go ahead and call a corporate and make a complaint. I am not sure if she is mentally impaired or just had her period, but we didn't ask. However, I did make two phone calls to Dollar Car Rental customer care after we returned from the vacation. Each time a Dollar rep hangs up on me. So you can see how Dollar / Hertz cares about the quality of their service.

Our advice is to avoid unrealistic prices and GARBAGE service at Dollar / Hertz Car Rental, as it may ruin your vacation. You know what they say, you get what you pay for. Our best bet for renal is go to AVIS and have peace of mind. Attached, you can find a photo of the mental girl who needed the police to explain here what she is being paid for. Hope it helps.

Dollar Alice Springs sent us out in a car without the full equipement to change a tyre. In a 40 degree heat, changing a tyre without the crank handle was very hard. We had only driven 103 km in the car. They replaced both front tyres as the other was worn- probably why ours punctured. 25km out of Alice there is no phone signal. We were fortunate we were not that far out when the puncture happened- although on our way there. On arriving at the airport they also tried to say that we had a limited km booking. We didn't. They also gave us what they considered to be an upgrade as they didn't have the car we booked. We booked a lovely toyota corolla- or similar. Does around 60 mpg. They gave us a great big car- 38 mpg. When travelling as far as we did this was a big difference in fuel cost. We booked Dollar here as it had good reviews. MMMMM

Worst ever experience with car rental, upon returning the car the employee was asking me if I had changed my car or upgraded it during the rental and I said NO, turned out that they gave me a document for a car rental with a license plate and the actual rental car was with a different license plate !!!!???
The big Hit they charged me $1220US as a security deposit that turned out its for additional insurance when I had already paid for a full coverage insurance with the rental price for $1633CAN for 18 Days, which I consider a scam.
Something is wrong their office has Dollar and Thrifty car rental signs, you rent from Dollar car rental, you get the agreement with Dollar, but the $1220US that supposed to be a security deposit was charged /paid to Hurts car rental.
When we were arguing with them about it and it does not make a since to have to pay for a rental with a full coverage $1633CAN and to have an additional insurance for $1220US, the office manager told us this is wat you got and if you don't like it will call the police for you, what an attitude and customer experience.

During our use of the car we experienced a death in our family. That changed our return home flight

During our use of the car we experienced a death in our family. That changed our return home flight plans so we asked to return the car to Stockton CA instead of Sacramento Airport. It took 3 separate phone calls & almost 4 hours of talking to make the change. First Dollar said it would cost $1800, then $900, then $500 which we finally desperately accepted. Dollar said the car would have to be towed, that's why it cost so much. It was a terrible experience with uncaring "corporate policies" ruling the day. Do not recommend!

CAUTION EVERYONE!!

CAUTION EVERYONE!!
My reservation completely changed after I confirmed it through a text link I received days before my rental! The rate jumped from a holiday discount of $264.87 per week to over $1300 per week! Customer service assured me they would honor the emailed confirmation at the counter, so I was advised to keep it saved. I was also told by the customer service representative that I could add a free driver by presenting our AAA membership cards, which I was thrilled about! Upon arrival, the counter representative had to manually adjust the amount due to get it closer to my expected payment, which was just slightly more, but it was still an irritating process that shouldn’t have been her responsibility to fix. After sorting out the new rental amount, I requested to add my free driver and presented both AAA cards. However, the counter representative then informed me that the free driver could not be honored because my booking needed to be made through AAA and not directly through the rental service. It’s frustrating to discover this at the counter after being reassured by customer service! The representative never mentioned that the booking had to go through AAA to qualify for the free driver. I just needed to show our AAA cards, and that was supposed to be it. My frustration returned, and I found myself twitching from annoyance. I’m still upset that I was told it would be free to add a driver, only to find out they wanted to charge me $15 a day! DO NOT CLICK on any rental car text link to check in!! Finding the cheapest car rental is always a great feeling, but even a slight increase messed that up for me. I can't help but think this is a common issue: sending out text links to check in, modifying rental agreements, fixing issues at the counter, and charging extra fees = a win for the company. Thanks for listening to my rant. 12/2025 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone..

Warning to Others Based on Our Experience with the Service

We are sharing this review to alert others about our experience with the service during an ongoing rental in Australia.
From the start, the experience was fraught with issues. At pickup, we encountered an unwelcoming and dismissive attitude from two staff members. After a considerable wait, a third staff member eventually completed the rental, but the overall impression was already quite negative.
This was a long-term rental, and it was clearly stated at pickup that we would be traveling 17,000–20,000 km over several months. This was explicitly mentioned and acknowledged, so we expected the vehicle to be suitable for such a long-distance journey.
According to the service sticker on the windscreen, the next service was due at 38,700 km. We inquired if the vehicle would need to be swapped or serviced during the rental due to the extensive distance planned, but this was categorically denied, as we were informed that the company uses an internal maintenance system that indicated the vehicle was serviced and approved.
We are now at about 53,500 km, meaning the vehicle is operating approximately 14,700 km beyond the specified service interval.
During the rental, we faced a serious safety issue. We arranged for an independent external inspection, which confirmed that the rear tyres were significantly worn and unsafe, clearly not suitable for the agreed rental duration and mileage. We were explicitly warned that continuing to drive the vehicle would pose a serious safety risk. Written documentation from this inspection is available.
Given the condition of the tyres and the overdue service, we cannot reasonably trust that other critical safety components, such as the brakes, are in acceptable condition.
Despite this, we were informed that all costs for roadside assistance and tyre replacement would be our responsibility, and that we were required to return the vehicle with five fully functional tyres, regardless of the condition of the tyres originally provided.
What ensued is deeply troubling.
The issue was formally escalated to the Head Office, Claims, and Executive Customer Relations. As of today, there has been no response for six days, while the rental remains active and the vehicle has been independently deemed unsafe.
In parallel, we experienced a significant system failure. On 20 December, we received an automated email stating that the vehicle had not been returned, despite having nearly two weeks left on the rental. We had to contact the company ourselves to rectify this.
Due to the complete lack of support and the urgency of these safety issues, we are now compelled to resolve the situation ourselves. Since no assistance is being provided, we will have to rent a replacement vehicle from another service for one week, entirely at our own expense, just to continue our journey safely.
From our experience, this reflects a systemic failure across customer service, internal systems, escalation handling, and safety responsibility.
Based on what we have gone through, we would strongly recommend against renting from this service, especially for long-term rentals or travel involving significant distances.

Unpleasant experience with the representative

The representative was very rude. I was asked to pay for an entire extra day just because I wanted to pick up the car one hour earlier. However, when I returned the car later than scheduled and faced a long wait, the representative refused to offer a free day. This will be my last time renting from this service.

Unpleasant interaction with the representative

The representative was quite rude. Additionally, they insisted on charging me for an entire extra day when I requested to pick up the vehicle just one hour earlier. However, when I returned the vehicle later than the agreed time, there was a long queue, and the representative refused to waive the extra day charge. This will be my last rental with this service.

Excessive late return charges

Standard rental rates at the airport are around $52 per day. I returned my vehicle 1.5 hours late and was charged an outrageous $564. I'm still trying to understand the reasoning behind this charge, and the management seemed quite opportunistic. I will not be renting from this service again.

Confusing pricing and poor customer service

The initial quote was $349, but upon confirmation, it increased to over $419. Adding a second driver over the phone took 27 minutes, with a representative who had a strong accent. After multiple holds, I was told to verify my credit card information despite having a confirmation number. I was then told I could pick up the vehicle either an hour earlier or later, but not at the requested time. It was a disorganized experience.
