We rented a car from Europcar at Gatwick Airport during the summer. Unfortunately, the vehicle we had booked and paid for was unavailable, and we were provided with a substitute. This was the first indication that things were not going smoothly.Despite having paid in advance for insurance, we were informed there was an additional hidden fee for coverage, which was an unexpected and unwelcome cost. We had budgeted for the trip assuming everything was prepaid, so this extra charge forced us to adjust our finances. While returning the car, an object was thrown from the vehicle in front of us on the motorway, striking the windscreen and causing a chip. At the rental depot, we informed the agent of the incident, providing details of the time and location, and offered to file a police report to address the situation. The agent dismissed our offer, advising that there was no need for a report, as nothing would be done about the chip. Trusting their advice, we proceeded to catch our flight home.Months later, we were surprised to receive a charge for the windscreen damage, as there was no third party to claim from. Had we followed through with the police report, as we initially offered, this situation might have been avoided. In summary, we strongly recommend caution when renting from Europcar UK. From hidden fees to aggressive upselling tactics, it seems they are more focused on extracting additional charges after the rental is complete. Our experience left us disappointed and frustrated.
Ok....wanted to share this......so, I had a recent trip to Ireland. I would have liked to fly into Derry which is just across the border from Letterkenny, where I was staying, but there were no cheap flights so I flew into Belfast and had a hire car booked with Europcar. I did make the booking over the phone because I figured there might be an issue crossing the border so wanted to clarify. The booking came to about £150 with unlimited mileage and no extra fees for crossing the border. But, on arrival, I was told that there would be a £30, per day, charge for being across the border. I was really not happy about that AT ALL and cancelled the booking. I was first told that it couldn't be cancelled but it was and I have since received the full credit for that booking. So, I got the bus to Derry and from Derry to Letterkenny. On the way I booked the car hire, online, for collection in Letterkenny. So, I arrived there expecting no issues as I wasn't going to be crossing the border - car hire was prepaid, £106 this time for the 5 days. On arrival, I was told that there would be a £30, per day, charge for full insurance. This was starting to get REALLY stressful. The gentleman told me the charge in Belfast Europcar would have been for the insurance and not for crossing the border. Well, that's not how I understood it. Maybe there was a misunderstanding. But maybe NOT! Anyway, I wasn't going to pay more than double for the car hire - that should be made clear at time of booking, so I opted for the 13 odd hundred pound authorisation on my card in case, which I was not happy about at all. So I drove off. I have to say it really was a very nice car - a VW Golf with only 21000 on the clock. And that's kms not miles. But I was somewhat freaked and later checked Europcar reviews which freaked me out even more. 69% of their reviews are only 1 star and a lot of them are similar stories to mine and when the car is returned some little scratch etc is found that was there before and hundreds of pounds are debited from the customer's card. It has to be said that Enterprise has similar feedback ratings. So, for the whole 5 days I'm stressing about what happens when I return the car. In the end, everything was sweet. I stressed for nothing. The authorised, but not processed, £1300 deposit disappeared from my statement the following day after returning the vehicle although the office was closed and I had to leave the keys through the letterbox which concerned me as well as no one gave me the ok. So, in the end, I am very happy. I would have to say that £106 for that car was way too little for the 5 days. Should have been more but not £350 or whatever it was for the extras. It has been a very long time since I hired a car. I do vaguely remember having to leave a deposit before of about maybe £500. But that was years ago so £1300 today is probably the equivalent. I will be more careful next time. In fact, not sure I want to go through that again even though it worked out great in the end. Hope this review is of use. I did select 3 stars at the start but have upgraded it to 5 now. Europcar does need to address its feedback ratings. I suppose most people will leave a review if they are unhappy but not bother when everything is ok. Maybe they could offer customers a tiny refund for leaving a review, positive or negative. Thank you.
I hired a car in March 23, delivery and collect service. Car was inspected on arrival by me and europcar colleague. I noticed 2 scratches on driver hand side rear door and pointed them out.Upon collection from home address all was inspected by me and europcar driver and no documents given.Mid June I receive an email and letter from their debt collector claiming i owe over £600 for 2 scratches on right hand side and threatening legal action. They claim I reported 2 scratches on left hand side rear door and are trying to charge me for the scratches.Poor service, fraudulent claiming and definitely not worth the hassle. Please use another company.I have asked for evidence dated from date car was collected. For all I know its one of their staff that have damaged the car and trying to take money from clients.Shocking service
Europcar acted as the supplier for a car booked through a 3rd party. They refused the car for reasons not explicit in the terms and conditions I was issued by the agent. However Europcar are absolving themselves of any blame and say that I shouldn't book through 3rd parties like Enjoy Travel or Holidaycars.com, as they look for loopholes to withhold refunds. The irony is that Europcar are happy to act as business partners to these 3rd parties !! ( and play no part in regulating them)Needless to say I am still trying to get a refund.Book through one of the other main hire companies (maybe try Sixt, Budget, AVIS etc), but not Europcar, and certainly not an agent like Holidaycars.com or Enjoy Travel.
Having had breakdowns of my mobility car europcar supplied me with 3 vehicles since march.Customer services have always been so friendly & polite every time i have spoken to them.Their cars have been clean & reliable with the last car being brand new.Efficient delivery/pick ups, highly recommended & trustworthy service.Thank you to all at "europcar" hilsea.
One of the worst companies I've had the misfortune of dealing with, customer service is non existent,no compassion to family emergencies, cannot get through to rental centre in Naples capodichino airport,a truly awful company if I could give no stars I would Still no reply from Europacar. After leaving bad review they asked that I contacted them which i did and still no reply to my email,a generic answer on trustpilot and Europcar thinks they have looked after unhappy customers
Updated 5th Aug 24 following their automated response below. If they actually cared they would have read that I have already emailed them. Still waiting!Car was clean and staff who delivered were friendly. But be warned we paid a lot for the home delivery and collection and then extra fuel charges. Car was delivered almost full of petrol. I drove only 25 miles and topped up the car 2 miles from house with £8 of petrol which makes me think that the car wasn’t full on delivery. I could handle that. Very surprised to them get another bill for a further £7 of fuel. I’m not sure whose mileage I’ve been charged but it wasn’t mine. Emailed their help desk and no response. So be warned if using the expensive home delivery and collection offering as you are paying for all the other mileage they put on the cars as they deliver and collect!
