Awful experience at Cambridge store - wrong van, not refunded difference until I raised a complaint and still pending and not a great van offered in place of what I ordered. Update- Europcar have still not been in touch despite saying they would be. Awful customer experience.
Wow if only I had a look at reviews before hiring a van to move house with europcar, shoddy across the board. We paid for a LUTON van to move house, a week before they phoned to say it wasn’t available and we’d need to downsize but that the capacity was similar. Begrudgingly we said yes. They then phone to say we need to repay for the hire of that van?! Despite already having 170£ for the original hire (assured this will be refunded within 10 days), we then pay out AGAIN for a second van. You guessed it the day before completion they phoned to say we don’t have that van now, unless we want to wait until 5pm?! Erm no. So we downsize yet again to what can only be described as a large car, we refuse to pay again but are then asked to pay a whopping deposit despite them already having 2x van payments from us. The customer service was beyond shocking, people have the communication skills of a wet lettuce, and that’s putting it nicely. You ask at the desk and are met with blank faces and “we don’t know how to do that”. Honestly shocking from start to finish and 300£ lighter.
Thieves, they will steal your money. I was given a courtesy car, RED MG, in January 2025. They collected it in February 25. On 28/03/25 they charged my card £163.56. I called to ask why they said it was for a Parking fine. I asked for proof which they took their time in sending. The parking fine was for a WHITE VESPA in LONDON. An entirely different vehicle type. Not just that, they don't have common sense. I live 300miles(one way) away from London. The mileage I used in the duration of me having the courtesy car was below 250miles.Multiple times I have contacted them, but they have usurped the money, refusing to admit that they should have checked before paying the bloody fine or at the very least contacted the Hirer before paying the fine. They keep saying to contact the Parking authority and there is no way to contact them. The Parking Authority's website states fines cannot be appealed once paid. So because of the illiteracy of EuropCar and thieving ethics of them, I am left with a huge £163.60 charge. Already struggling in the current economics and then businesses like these steal from you. I have pictures to provide as well. I contacted them more than 5 times. I have names to name as well.

I have generally had a quite good service in the UK when cars were provided on the basis of a government contract and I was not paying for them directly myself. However be aware that any possible favourable experiences in the UK may not be reflected in other parts of Europe. Be particularly wary in Bulgaria where an effort was made to defraud me. Look at the reviews before hiring, and buy hire car insurance separately, before travelling.
I wish I'd read the Reviews here before ever using Europcar @ London Stansted Airport & wish I could give a negative score! We had never hired a vehicle before & could almost see ££s signs in the rep's eyes when he asked us. My husband did ask if the car we had booked had a Sat Nav system (Ford Focus or similar booked via Booking.com) & were told that only new electric cars had these. He then went into back office & bought out 2 sets of keys for a Hyundai Kona & a Volvo car - no sign of our original request!! After being bombarded with insurance information & other additional charges told that the insurance already taken out with Booking.com was useless, so told to take out their additional insurance - even charged more for the One-Way charge than anticipated - altogether had to pay an additional £400 for a car we didn't request or need!!! We weren't even shown to the car or shown around the vehicle to check for any damage & it was getting dark by the time we finished with the reams of paperwork. We didn't even know how to start the car initially & had to figure out how to operate the Sat Nav ourselves! The final figure on the Rental Agreement was deducted from my husband's bank account but then adjusted after leaving the Desk. All in all - a totally traumatic experience, which was unexpected & we left shell-shocked. I think the staff are trained to confuse customers into signing up for additional services that they do not want or need. I think that they make customers feel cheap & uneducated if they question the explanation for additional services. I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy. I contacted Booking.com with these details and think they are aware of their practices as they refunded the insurance that I took with them without any questions & advised that the deposit (which we didn't know would be deducted either) would be returned within 28 days but not much else. PLEASE DO NOT HIRE VEHICLES FROM THEM - we will never ever use them.
Hired a car at Manchester Airport March 2025 for about 15 days. We had prepaid in Australia, or so we thought. The staff were quite friendly however when we returned to Australia we had been charged a huge amount over and beyond what was expected, considering we had prepaid. Tried to contact customer service a number of times with no response apart from the usual computer generated response. Very disappointed.
Booked a van fairly easily online for a few hours to move some things into a house. Paid the full price as you’d expect. Completed an online check in and all going well. 24 hours later I receive an email to say I’ve failed a credit check?? I’ve already paid in full. Can’t get your money back until there process is complete to send the money back to you. It’s not like I’d need it to get another van from a normal company is it! Then another 24 hours later I receive another email saying I’m due to pick the vehicle up as planned. Which one is it? These may be slightly cheaper but just go to a normal company and pay slightly more. It will save you the hassle
