Served by Alex at Edinburgh Airport 18/5/25 who provided good, cheery service. However, despite request when small car booking was made & later by email NOT to upgrade to a bigger car, I ended up with a large SUV. When I returned the car to Edinburgh airport on 18/6/25, I was charged the owed amount as expected, and staff there advised there would be no further charges. Couple of days later I was charged an additional amount 263 pounds for extra miles travelled but more disturbingly for 3 extra days when 31 days had been FULLY prepaid. Also sent email to Europcar requesting refund, on 25th June (unanswered) and also 22nd July, (unanswered). So Europcar's follow up service is clearly appalling and I am beginning to suspect that in the absence of replies from the company that a fraudulent charge may have been made by someone in their head office.
I originally booked a van for 6 days and went over a few hours. So they charge me for 1 extra day, which is fair enough but what they didn’t tell at all until I confronted them about the extra 700 miles in charges! My booking was 6 days/ 1500 ml. This is 250 ml a day. Because I went over a few hours they change the mileage allowance to 90 per day which meant I was over 700 mos. Very deceiving. Never again I will hire from them. Also Bristol south not very nice people. In the end they charge me an extra 144£ for bringing the van a day later. Completely out of order!
The pick-up experience was fine except I'd hired a golf ( or equivalent) and none were available, so was supposedly given an upgrade to an MG ZS hybrid SUV. This was the worst car I've ever driven. Gears would unexplainable kick down and brakes grabbed. Very unpleasant to drive. Also, I was told Heathrow vehicle return was open 24 hours. I had a 6.30am international flight, so wanted to drop-off at 4am. Unfortunately, not a sole there except, after much searching the property, a security guard who said just leave car with keys in it. Felt very uncomfortable about this but had no choice. Then the most disappointing fact was the overcharging that hit my bank account with no explanation. My travel agent investigated and after reviewing a very confusing contract, it appears for some reason Europcar charged me for 28 days of insurance, rather than the 17 days of the rental, plus a random licencing fee I'd already paid. My travel agent has submitted a refund request but I'm told it will take up to 21 days to process even if Europcar accept the claim. Europcar need to simplify contract, explain fees and then not overcharge after the event. Also, if the Heathrow returns are advertised as open 24 hours then someone needs to be there to accept cars. Not good enough Europcar. It's little wonder your customer ratings are so low.
The company over charged us for mileage. We disputed a month ago and no response. Now we are receiving 'final notices' on payment. I have tried to contact the customer service and no response. I called the collection team and they there is nothing they can do but to pursue. I have now raised the issue with BVRLA. Hopefully, will be resolved, but we will not be using them again.
Europcar (Edinburgh) behaved in an unethical and arguably illegal manner related to a car hire. The hiring process and the vehicle were good but, TWO MONTHS LATER, they sent me an invoice and have debited my credit card for GBP 231.42 (AUD $538.14) to replace an allegedly damaged tyre. (a) They very obviously forged my signature on a form accepting liability (b) They illegally debited my credit card without authority (c) they illegally kept a record of my credit card after they had released the bond. Unbelievably disgraceful behaviour!! If it happened in Australia I would take legal action. Not surprisingly I will never hire from Europcar again, anywhere in the world!BE WARNED!
I rented a van from Europcar on the 13th of June and returned it the following day, the 14th. While I’ll admit their vehicles are quite lovely and modern, that’s about the only good thing I can say. The rest of the experience was a full-blown disaster.I used the van to move boxes to my new house, driving a total of just 38 miles. However, when I went to refill the tank before returning it, I had to put in 14.61 litres of diesel. That’s laughably excessive. For context, I drive a diesel SUV 64 miles round-trip to work daily, and that uses only 4–5 litres. So how did 38 miles in a van burn through nearly triple that? The answer is simple: the vehicle wasn’t filled up properly when I received it. The digital fuel gauge can be deceiving, giving the impression of a full tank even when it’s not. I mentioned this immediately upon return, only to be told that maybe the heavy boxes I moved caused it. A flimsy excuse at best.I raised a formal complaint online on June 15th, expecting the promised "7 working day" resolution. It's now well past that, and I’ve received nothing but silence and disgraceful customer service. I've been hung up on twice after providing my complaint reference, and on one occasion, I was subjected to the rudest, most unhelpful call imaginable. Not once did anyone seem remotely interested in resolving the issue. If you're thinking of using Europcar, don’t unless you’re prepared to be ignored, insulted, and treated like a nuisance the moment you raise a concern. Their complaint process is more like a black hole. Once you're in, expect no return.Avoid Europcar. Their shiny cars hide a rusty, soulless machine underneath.
I thought I was booking car from train station as that is what I searched for, but booked the airport instead of train station in Lille as It added in nearby places and called itself Europe Lille. Europcar refused to amend booking, despite I called Expedia within 20 mins of booking - soon as I noticed what had happened. Said I have to cancel and pay the cancelation charge and book again! Will never use them again. Expedia stepped in to compensate me - which was good of them.
