We booked the Discover Japan small group tour between 3rd and 13th November and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. As a couple in our 50s we had never been to Japan and were a little anxious about our trip. We joined a group of 9 plus our guide, Giulia( an Italian fluent in both Japanese and English). We had a fabulous time. The tour was incredibly well organised, using rail and bus passes so we gained confidence to travel independently in the future, and visiting a wide range of sites and experiences at a reasonable pace and with a guide that gave us relevant, interesting and engaging information. The hotels were clean, quiet, comfortable and in great locations. The food, guided by Giulia, was varied and authentic but not too scary ! For a company that seems to be better known for arranging rail passes, Japan Experience small group tours are a hidden gem. We looked high and low for a small group, actively supported, tour of Japan and this was the best we found. We cannot recommend them highly enough. And if you get Giulia as your guide. You are lucky people.
If we could give Tom 10 stars, we would. Tom was a very good guide. We meet in the lobby of our hotel. And from here we took the train to the Fushimi Inari. He talked about the shrine and what Gods were presented there. He walked us through the first many gates and talked about tradions, when through gates. When we were finished, we asked if we could get some breakfast. He showed us a great place to get some coffee and breakfast. He also ordred some coffee and we talked coffee in Denmark/Europe. We then took the train to the Bambo forest. He knew a different way to the forest, so we got to see a different side of the neighborhood. When we got to the forest, he pointed out a spider and that led to us talking about spiders and snakes in Denmark and Australia. He was so interested in Denmark and our cultur, food and language. It felt more like we were hanging out and not on a guided tour. Which we found amazing. Tom is a 10/10 tour guide. Would recommend. We even went back to The thousand red gates and went all the way to the top in one hour!
In the end, it turned out fine, but the documents we purchased – the Japan Rail Pass – got stuck in Norwegian customs. The shipment was missing a Commercial Invoice, and we had to ask you to send one afterwards. This process took several days, and the package arrived just one day before our departure, so it was a bit nerve-racking. I believe you should have known that a Commercial Invoice is required and that it should have been included with the shipment from the start.
