Review Time
I would not recommend this insurance company at all. They never paid out anything for either of my pets and utilized every loophole they could to avoid paying, to the point of twisting my words as a pet owner and using that version of events instead of the results of veterinary professionals, even after I put my pet through x-rays and ultrasounds to be thorough and determine exactly what was wrong. But Pets Plus Us did not care about the results determined by professional vets.NOTE TO ADD: The date feature on this form is broken. Will not let me choose the date of incident.
I should have read the comments before purchasing the insurance… who said that even talking to your vet during the first year of your pup ends up as pre-existing condition was right. My puppy was lethargic and I took her to the vet for a check over, that ended up on the insurance as a pre-existing condition reviewable after 12 months…. Ridiculous.Just to respond to petsplusus comment: I signed up when my pet was 3 months, seems that’s not early enough. Pre-existing conditions should be diagnosed diseases, not mild, general symptoms. Truth is no insurance wants to pay claims, only to get revenue from subscriptions.
I purchased Accident and Illness Insurance protection plan for my cat Dazzle back in 2013. As requested by Pets Plus Us, we took Dazzle to a vet and did a thorough examination to ensure there was no pre-existing condition. Fast forward to 2017, Dazzle was diagnosed with Diabetes and suffered a life-threatening condition called ketoacidosis. We had no choice but to send Dazzle to a pet ICU for a couple of nights. Thanks to the protection offered by Pets Plus Us, we were able to obtain all urgent medical assistance Dazzle required, without being overly concerned about the medical bills. Since then, Pets Plus Us had continued to provide reimbursement for routine Diabetes medication and treatments. in May 2023, Dazzle ended his 6 year battle with Diabetes and we submitted the last reimbursement request with Pets Plus Us for cremation expenses. As always, the claim process was smooth and fast. Following the final reimbursement, Pets Plus Us sent us a sympathy letter, cancelled our policy and backdated to Dazzle's day of passing in the most efficient manner.
When I adopted my dog, I got PetsPlusUs from the breeder. I must say, I was in love with the insurance the first year. I paid the most complete coverage. They were fast and cordial in the reimbursements. Last year my dog had to undergo surgery due to 2 canine extractions. That's when I first understood the plan wasn't complete as they sold. 4k cost went from my pocket. In the same year, I tried to add dental with them, and they didn't have it. I mentioned I would need to have a dental for her or cancel the policy. Basically, I heard that "up to you if you want to cancel the policy and lose the pre-existing coverage".That was when I felt this whole scheme of good and fast reimbursement also meant getting you stuck with bad long-term service and coverage.Today I discovered that they do not accept dual insurance, so the dental coverage I got elsewhere for my dog will need to choose either to stay with them or leave. All this because I informed them I had already received reimbursement from another insurance plan and they didn't have to fully reimburse me.Long story short, if you have a chance to find another insurance plan, run a move away from them.
I have nothing but good things to say about Pets Plus Us. I was brought over from PC Pet Insurance 10 years ago when my account was transferred and it was an easy transition, my vet sends them in my receipts for me and they then mail me my cheque, it's a seamless process and with a sick dog, that has epilepsy and also congestive heart failure, but she was completely healthy until 7 years of age, she's now 14 almost and I pay about $500 in her meds every other month. Without insurance I would be up s**t creek without a paddle, it's my #1 piece of advice for any new pet parents. A1+++
Don't invest in this product, as it caused my dog to experience frequent vomiting. When I tried to make a claim, my application was denied because my dog had diarrhea last year. The company claimed that this was due to the same digestive issue and considered it a pre-existing condition.
I've actually had a decent experience with these guys and would use them for my next pet. Easy enough to get reimbursed (just one form), and if your pet doesn't have any preexisting conditions you're good to go. Rates are favourable compared to other companies I've looked into, and I've always been reimbursed quickly. When my pet passed away, they sent a lovely note of condolences and made a donation on his behalf to a charity. They offer a review on exclusions after a certain time frame so you're able to get those removed if your pet has been healthy. I just wish they had a multi-pet discount!
STAY AWAY FROM PETS + US. I'd give them -10 stars if I could. I wish I could go back in time and choose ANY OTHER pet insurance company. I've been paying roughly 120$/month for 36 months for my dog and it's been an utter waste of money. That money would have been better spent on any other company, or just in a savings account. First, it takes up to HOURS to speak to an actual human on the phone and it's usually someone with a huge accent and it's super complicated to communicate with them and you always need to spell out the most basic things. It's awful. I tried submitting 3 different claims, and they only accepted one out of the three. They argue and nitpick everything about the other two, and they even quote sentences and exclusions that are NOT part of my insurance policy when they deny claims. It's absolutely insane. I sent my policy's user guide + they letters refusing claims to a lawyer friend and he says it's insane that they're denying and they're literally pulling exemptions out of nowhere and those exemptions are NOT in my policy user guide. But guess what? If you want to fight them, it's a David vs. Goliath battle. It doesn't matter that you are right. You are likely a regular person with a full-time job, your pet, maybe a spouse, kids, etc. And they're a big company with tons of lawyers and insurance people who have all the time and resources to drain you out mentally and financially. Stay away. It's the best thing for your pet and yourself - your financial health, mental health and your own physical health, as they will grind you down. Also, the (very few) 5-stars review on here look fake. I wish I had looked on here before signing up with Pets + Us.
We have been SO happy with our petsplusus insurance. We have 4 pets covered with them and they have covered every claim so far. If you actually submit everything properly and read the fine print you should have no problems with the company. My dog recently had the TPLO surgery done which costed us $4000. Petsplusus covered our butts paying everything but the deductible and our share, being only $709! Wow! We have also had to use it for our cat, and dog in the past and have had no issues getting the money back FAST and CONVENIENTLY. 100% recommend. Whenever we call they always answer quickly and they have such nice customer service representatives working for them. Thank you so much petsplusus.
