Review Time
Reviewed my benefits page before deciding to use my benefits on either glasses or contacts, and made sure I understood my allotment. Bought contacts and put in a reimbursement and only got half returned. When I called I was told buying contacts OOO would mean only partial reimbursement. Does my benefits page say this? Nope. Literally could have ordered from anyone but because my page did't have any stipulations for contacts benefits I chose the same company I was purchasing my glasses from (out of pocket). Honestly paying OOP for your exam vs. this really makes not much difference.
Buyer beware - every other vision insurance has “once per calendar year” limitation on benefits, which makes sense. But VSP has a “no sooner than 12 months from last visit” rule that seem designed to avoid paying out the benefits. Went for new contacts just as my one year supply from the last visit was about to expire, over 11 months from the last visit, and they refused to payout the benefits because it was just before the one-year mark. Evidently you have to literally RUN OUT of your annual supply before you can go to a new appointment for the next year’s supply. I can understand not paying for two months in a row, but to have a rule that you have to wait until after you run out to get your next year’s supply of contacts is ridiculous and practically fraudulent as an insurance practice.
Horrible experience with VSP. I’ve had to call them numerous times to cancel my plan and they tell me it’s cancelled yet I’m still getting charged multiple times months later. Terrible customer service and just horrible management. Go somewhere else
This company is fraudulent. Say they will give you a rebate and then come up with every reason not to. I was given a number to call and prompts in order to get a supervisor on the phone, which I succeeded the first time I called. They said wait 7-10 days and you’ll get a response . NOPE! No response. Now I called that same number back, and the prompts have changed and there is no possible way to get a human on the phone now. I’m getting my lawyer involved now. Total fraud.
Not only is their so called coverage not accepted or equal to the stores regular discount/senior discount BUT when you try to call and cancel, they won't let you, keep claiming you signed some contract. You see MOST people try to cancel and they would have no business if they did not trick you
I used them for years without a single problem or issue. COVID seems to be the default excuse for poor service, followup or anything else.Last year I couldn't get an appointment while COVID was going on but they sure kept taking the payments. I had to move to a new place. Tried getting an appointment and since there were very few in their program in the new place I had to drive to Clemson Eye. Beautiful place but they only care about their medicare paid lasik patients. They took eye stats and then dilated my eyes then changed the specs. After I left they never called to followup. I called numerous times no one answered and no one returned the calls. I eventually found an only company after 6 months which took me into 2021. I never used the lense coverage in 2020 but they charged me for it every month. Contacted VSP the person sent me a message saying that I qualified for the program but had to fill something out which I did, of course there is no record of it. So when I showed up the eye doctor said I get the vision part but not contacts. Now why in the world a person go for an exam and not buy contacts for close to 6 months? So, I called to cancel and was informed that I couldn't because I had used the service in 2021 and it is a year contract. I explained and stated apply the benefit I used in 2021 to what wasn't used in 2020 and let's call it a day and I will find someone new.COVID has become the excuse for everything. Its the excuse for crappy service and lack of responsibility on people doing a job. As a veteran, you would think they would try harder or say. We'll take care of it but there is always one more hoop to jump through, one more excuse. It took me a month to get the eye appointment I had today. I even asked if I could do out of network and use the same doctor the VA was going to send me to for my regular eye glass appointment but no couldn't do that. It save their company money but we don't want to do that. Horrible but I guess crap is the new normal.
There is not a lot to like about VSP. I have mostly used their web site to manage my employer-provided vision insurance, but the site is horribly difficult to navigate and find what you need. Price wise it seems just average or even on the higher end. I have submitted only one insurance claim for contact lenses via the web site, and got a confirmation email that it was received. However, I had not heard any update on the claim so I went back and after a long time looking for my past claims on the unorganized website, I finally found the buried status of my claim was "call customer service". Thanks VSP, that would have been great to know, and what a hassle! Still working out what the issue is with the claim.
Pretty odd there are no reviews yet given the size of the company, but they are more a discount than insurance. I like that things are spelled out and you don't have to wait on insurance to figure out your payment, but my spectacles still cost $500 even with discounts. Definitely better than nothing if you do not have vision insurance that covers glasses and contacts.
