Avoid at All Costs – Host Harassment & Airbnb’s Failure to Act

I had an absolutely terrible experience with this listing - (Castle Terrace, Entire home in Arraiolos, Portugal, Hosted by João.) The host was extremely rude, arrogant, and harassing, sending me inappropriate messages that were completely unacceptable. To make matters worse, after my stay, they left a revenge review full of false claims.I reached out to Airbnb customer support (Confirmation Code: HMDQ9DDNBR) expecting them to uphold their policies against harassment, but they did absolutely nothing to help. Despite clear evidence of the host’s behavior, Airbnb refused to remove the unfair review or take action against the host. This experience has shown me that Airbnb does not protect guests from abusive hosts and allows unfair, retaliatory reviews to remain on profiles. If you value your peace of mind and safety, AVOID THIS LISTING AND THINK TWICE BEFORE TRUSTING AIRBNB SUPPORT.

Airbnb is a joke

I have been an Airbnb person for the last three years. I recently Airbnbed out a property of mine in Florida. Let me tell you about the kind of people that came to stay at my place two strippers that got high the entire time and then had the audacity to say they felt like they were being watched and harassed and people don’t like it when the host bothers them. Well, she parked in the main driveway and was asked to relocate her car and that apparently made her feel unsafe and like she had no privacy. Or how about the construction workers that said they had four when my Airbnb specifically said it fits two comfortably or 4 if you’re in a pinch and then they brought eight people who disrupted my tenants tore up my yard and broke all my stuff. But Airbnb didn’t care about that. Although I did get the $20 back for the broken curtain rod, but not the four additional people two additional trucks and all the other damage. or how about the old people that came took all of the lighting fixtures off the walls and said I needed more lighting and rated me a two on cleanliness because they didn’t have a washer and dryer and felt that it needed to be updated. It needed to be updated. You had a stove and oven and everything that you need to live there except a washer and dryer. Let’s not forget the pictures and the square footage are all in the listing. On top of that, guests we’re paying two to $300 more for their taxes and fees and then guests are getting mad at me saying I’m expensive. I unlisted my property after only three months, two drug baggies (different guests) and two people who lied about who was staying. It gives people like me who travel and don’t wanna stay at a hotel, a bad rep. As far as staying at an Airbnb, I have stayed at five different locations. The first one was wonderful, but other guests have ruined it so it’s not listed anymore. One of them was nothing like the pictures and the other one had a host that actually lived upstairs and came to visit several times. (Not ok) i’m not a huge fan. I think I’ll stay with the hotels.

I didn't even get as far as booking

I didn't even get as far as booking. As soon as Airbnb required a facial photo, I was suspicious. What an easy way for ID theft. I could be on Airbnb today, certified online criminal next week. No thanks.

Think before hosting-I've been a host with them for over…

I've been a host with them for over five years now, and I've definitely learned a lot along the way! One thing I’ve noticed is that the focus often seems to be on the guests. For instance, there was a situation where a pump broke down due to unforeseen circumstances, and the guidelines they have—what they call "community standards"—were used to navigate that challenge. I had a guest who decided to take off his trousers and insisted on staying, even when I needed to assess the situation because of a burst pipe caused by the dry season. Although Airbnb offered him the option to relocate, he felt there wasn't enough communication from their side.In the end, I made the decision to cancel his reservation, which I felt was the right choice. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first bump in the road I've faced. During Covid, I had a guest who left quite a mess, and while I received only $80 in compensation, I was faced with potential repercussions myself. Sometimes it feels like the fees can be quite high as well!Overall, while there have been challenges, I still find hosting to be a rewarding experience!

They don't stick to their own Terms of Service

A letting company used Airbnb to rent their property. Novasol asked me for more than the agreed cleaning fee after I paid on Airbnb by sending me over to their own lettings website where they asked for a bank transfer before arrival. This goes against Airbnb's Terms of Service but Airbnb wouldn't return all of my money due to the deceitful host's cancellation policy.

I would give them zero if it were an option. Although you book via Airbnb therefore your contract is with them, they hold no responsibility for false advertising, they do not provide a refund and confuse you in a web of multiple conflicting communication to make you give up. I recommend booking.com or Agoda.com for a professional service. Greed is driving Airbnb. And do complain to your credit card companies and small claims court as it’s the only way Airbnb will start to care.

Review Not Being Removed Despite Providing Evidence

The support team confirmed that the review could be removed, but due to a technical issue, they were unable to process it at that time. For days, I have been explaining that I have evidence proving the review is unfair and that a support agent has already acknowledged this. However, the review still has not been removed.According to the new policy, only a team called the "Special Team" can handle such cases. However, there is no direct way to contact them. They only provide a form link, and despite submitting it multiple times and informing them about it, I keep receiving the same generic response. It seems like everyone is repeating the same scripted replies, and it is impossible to find someone who genuinely takes responsibility for the issue. If you are treated unfairly, you are simply left to deal with it, with no real solution in sight.

Really Disappointing

The place I stayed in was nothing like the pictures. It was dirty, had broken stuff everywhere, and honestly, I felt scammed. The host didn’t care at all when I messaged them. On top of that, the customer service was no help—just gave me the runaround.

Great Experiences Every Time

I honestly don’t understand why Airbnb gets so many bad reviews. I’ve been using it for years, and every time I’ve had an issue, customer support responded quickly and resolved it without any hassle. The booking process is smooth, and I always find a place that feels comfortable and welcoming. For me, Airbnb has been a reliable way to find great accommodations, and I’ll keep using it without hesitation!

Very poor service

Very poor service. When the property you rent is described as stunning (stunning Bath town house, Walcott buildings Bath UK) and you arrive and find it dirty, untidy, smelling damp, unsafe stair carpet and broken items like blinds and chair legs. You contact hosts immediately who do absolutely nothing to resolve and then air bnb remove your bad review which you post to warn others as it ‘doesn’t fit with there rules’ leaves you feeling not heard. I would not recommend them and I will not use them again ever!
