I tried to rent a car for the Christmas period as I am coming home from Spain to visit my family at first I was told it would be €120 and then when I confirmed my booking a few weeks before I arrived it moved to €280 and then when I arrived I was told it would be €850!? I got cover insurance from a third party but then told that the insurance would not cover so they would have to put a hold of 2 grand on my account, when I told them I did not have €2000 in my account the man was rude and did not help me and I left in tears. NEVER GO TO HERTZ
Hertz Ireland are a shower of corporate gob***tes that should be hauled in front of a complaints ombudsman. Like the previous reviewer, they have charged me an extra days rental, accusing me of breaching the grace period of 29 minutes. I returned the car to Kerry airport with no post inspection by Thrifty staff ie putting keys in return box. They did not respond to requests for clarification. Because, they did not communicate effectively with me, I also incurred a late payment charge. Therefore, avoid this ‘company’ like the plague. There are other more fair operators, even at Kerry airport
Hertz/Thrifty appear to operate a business model focused on post-rental charges rather than customer care.I rented a Ford Focus as a short-term runaround. The vehicle was marginally acceptable but poorly prepared (over-inflated tyres, overly sensitive brakes). A puncture occurred mid-rental, costing me over an hour waiting for roadside assistance. On return, I was told everything was fine. Almost a month later, I noticed nearly €400 had been charged to my credit card with no prior communication whatsoever. When queried, I was told a puncture counts as “damage”, despite the tyres being original with 27,000 km already on them. No notification, no courtesy email, no paperwork provided unless requested.I rent vehicles frequently and carry independent excess insurance, which thankfully resolved the charge — but that does not excuse Hertz’s lack of transparency or professionalism.Other major rental companies do not behave this way. I will not rent from Hertz or Thrifty again.
I wish I had taken the time to read about how awful this service would be.I showed up thinking everything was in order, only to be blindsided by hidden charges and an unexpected €4,000 deposit demand — or else I’d have to pay extra daily fees. None of this was clearly communicated in advance. It was buried deep in small print. It felt like a trap.Worse still, the pre-existing damage on the vehicle was underreported. I was invited to take my own photos (which tells you everything), but the damage had not been documented properly. I felt totally under siege. My experience was made unbearable by the employee's attitude. Spiteful. Cold. Dismissive. I was spoken to as if I were at fault for not reading the fine print, not as a customer asking for clarification—a wall of policy, petty power and zero empathy. It reminded me of the worst kind of low-cost airline tactics, except this is high-price Hertz, a brand I once associated with reliability and service. Never again.Look around. Pick a more deserving company.
Unbelievably poor experience. We hired a vehicle for 2 days from Knock airport. We were told on hire the fuel was only partially full and therefore we only needed to return to that level (noted on paperwork). When we returned vehicle the office was closed and no one around to assess vehicle on return. 2 weeks later I had a large charge to my credit card. Queried with Hertz (many delays in comms) and they confirmed damage and refuel charges applied. I was not notified of this, and I also know there was no damage. I challenged this as a fraudulent claim from them, they refunded the charges but because the exchange rate had changed from when they charged, I’ve still ended up paying for damage that doesn’t exist and refuelling that we were told wasn’t necessary. Totally dissatisfied customer. Will not be using again.
Do Not rent from Hertz in Ireland! They are a franchise and the branch at 157 South Circular Road in downtown Dublin intentionally gave ame a car with a bad clutch. I drove under 1 mile and the car caught fire! I drive a stick-shift Porsche in Los Angeles and know well how to drive a manual car. The roadside assistance person told me when I initially called, that Hertz has had nothing but problems with the clutches on this particular car model ( VW SUV). I had to go out to the Dublin airport to retrieve another more expensive car. Upon returning of that car, Hertz said they would email me the receipt, which they never did, instead they charged my America Express for the replacement clutch on the first vehicle. Be very careful as these franchise store see Americans and particularly America Women, as idiots. They didn’t realize I was the President of the company! Hertz Corporation in the US has been of no help yet this pulls down their overall business name as I, nor any of my staff, will ever rent from Hertz again unless this is resolved. This practice of incorrectly billing clients for their fleet of cars with bad clutches and who knows what else has to stop. Stay away. And you can bet the Hertz Board in the US is going to hear about this, as evidently others have had the same experience.
Renting in Shannon airport for over 30 years and now feel robbed of nearly €949 from this company! Their pictures focused more on damage to body of car but not on the tiny wind screen scratch which cannot been seen on their pictures due to reflection and on my picture after they decided I was responsible for that tiny scratch. No course of appeal as it was noticed after I handed back and I have no recollection what so ever of any hit to window (tiny) and wish I could post their and my picture here but can’t. Don’t use them full stop!!
Beware of hidden charges – disappointing serviceWe rented a car from Hertz and initially paid €333, as agreed when booking. When we arrived in person to pay, the staff confirmed that no additional money was needed. However, after using the car, we were charged an unexpected extra €200 due to terms that were never mentioned in person: “Some quotes—especially those from third-party sites—may exclude local taxes, airport surcharges, or government fees, which are added at pickup.”It’s frustrating that this critical information wasn’t communicated upfront. The service was poor and misleading, and we felt caught off guard by these hidden fees.If you’re considering renting from Hertz, make sure to ask explicitly about any additional charges—otherwise, you could end up paying much more than expected.
Horrible experience. Booked online €160 or so I thought. Ended up paying over €400 at desk. Unfortunately got a puncture. Total cost of puncture well over €200 . A small bit over the top. Found bill itemised and to my horror they charged nearly €90 to change the tyre, what a rip off. Nobody could prove that it was not just a leaky valve. Will not darken door step ever. Pure daylight robbers. 🤔👎👎👎👎
