I’ve ridden Lake cycling shoes for over 10 years for 4 reasons:They fit me well with my wider foot and high arch. They are very durable. They perform well with great power transfer and no hotspots on the bottom of my foot after a long ride. They make shoes with the four screw interface to fit Speedplay cleats.
As a bikefitter in South Africa; this is the 1st brand that offers a high quality shoe; WIDE (and narrow) enough for the average South African foot. The pricing for the quality is very relative and they really do feel like slippers. There is something for everyone.
I was a convert to Lake during the lockdown when you couldn’t go out and try on shoes. Their online measuring system is by far the best around. It’s like they know what a tape measure is. I recently bought my third pair of Lakes. I have ridden in CX 238s (size 43 wide) and wanted to try CX242. If you have a wide foot, these are the best shoe ever. The 238 is great, but the 242 feels a bit more airy. I wholeheartedly recommend either.
Shoe sizing by the site was off and I had to return a pair to exchange them, but the size up is “out of stock” on the site. I called and they exist in the warehouse so I have to do a manual return. Fine, but having to pay shipping on top of everything for a pair of shoes that cost hundreds of dollars is a bit ridiculous.
Fitting guide is awful, recommended shoes that were way too big. So then I lost my original shipping fee ($15) and had to pay $15 additional to return them. $30 just to get shoes that were too big. On top of that, Lake doesn't list weights for their products. As an endurance cyclist this is incredibly important to me. Lastly, their customer service is terrible and takes over a week to respond to simple questions. Not sure why I'd ever buy anything from them again.
For 25 years I've bought half a dozen pairs of bike shoes and endured the discomfort of cycling in them. So, finally broke down and bit the bullet for a pair of Lake MX201 and finally a comfort shoe I can wear for hours. I'd say the fit and comfort are worth the price. Plus the customer service! I called to order, in stock and received 2 days later.
