My 2 operations (1st on 5/8/2025 and 2nd on 3/10/2025 both went very well and I didn't have most of the possible "normal" effects indicated after the operation, apart from a slight eye/headache on the day - soon dealt with by taking paracetamol as advised.
First of all the staff. they were great.helpful and friendly the procedure was better than i expected a tiny bit discomfort during the operation but nothing to worry about the hardest part of the day was waiting for the drops to work can't wait to get the other eye done
This is an ongoing saga started in September 2024, in which Spamedica’s ‘unmanaged’ surgeon (now on performance improvement plan), verbally intimidated and shouted at the patient. Although clearly in a bad mood, he continued to operate. As a direct consequence significant internal injury was caused to the eye. A lead surgeon in at a different hospital provided excellent emergency treatment and saved the sight in the eye.Despite their acknowledgment of multiple significant failings to manage the surgeon and protect patients from abuse, plus bullying of the surgical team, Spamedica have dragged on a review of the issue and offered an insulting £200 as compensation. The compensation was for being put on beta blockers, diuretics, house bound for a week and a series of additional appointments to check if sight had been lost. All of this was avoidable if Spamedica management had monitored the surgeon’s performance. The trauma was inflicted at the Team Valley Gateshead hospital. The excellent emergency support was at the Silverlink hospital.
The Nurses and Surgeon was so good very kind and professional. There is a BUT ,my first eye was done on the 3rd of Sept2025 ,my second eye for the 21st of October cancelled. After emailing and several calls they rang me today and have to wait until 15th of Jan2026 for my second eye ..Very disappointing..
A registrar did my operation and dropped the lense into my eye and couldn’t find it!! After a few minutes the consultant took over and eventually located the lense and finished the procedure. I returned to Spamedica before I got home as my eye felt very painful. The pressure in my eye was high and they gave me a tablet to take it down and told me to take some paracetamol. My eye was so uncomfortable and painful I couldn’t open it so went to bed and slept for a few hours. My eye was still swollen for a few weeks afterwards and I had regular checks and extra eye drops for a further 3 weeks after the initial drops had been taken. It was a lot better when discharged. The aftercare was excellent.
