Absolutely disgraceful experience at Aldi Brighton (London Road). I was singled out (the only customer picked, as far as I could see) and asked to have my bag searched under their so-called anti-shoplifting policy. I never even opened my bag while in the store, so there was zero reason for suspicion of theft. I was not provided any rational explanation for why I had my bag searched and other customers were not. I have no idea if I was picked because I am a foreign national, but so far, this has never happened to me, anywhere. But since I haven't done anything that could raise any sort of suspicion, I can only guess why I was singled out. I left feeling embarrassed, humiliated, and judged. To make it worse, she proceeded to speak behind my back with a colleague at a distance I could hear them, which is also not a nice thing to do. The manager came to speak to me with a patronising attitude, but was unable to provide an explanation for why I was singled out with absolute no reason or evidence of wrong-doing, and kept repeating that she was doing that to everyone, contrary to what I have seen, and when asked why weren't other staff doing the same, he replied that it's because they weren't doing their job right, which doesn't make sense in this surrealistic experience. No customer should ever be treated this way. I have no idea on what legal ground anyone, apart from the police, is allowed to single you out and ask to search your personal property without a single reason or any plausible cause. It's a violation of your private rights and liberties. If Aldi thinks randomly targeting innocent shoppers and publicly humiliating them is acceptable, then they’ve lost all respect for the people who spend money in their store and have a quite diminished sense of social responsibility, as a business. As a small business owner myself, I have nothing against genuine anti-theft measures, but you must have reasonable grounds and concrete evidence to ask for the search of a customer's personal property. That's not what happened in this case; I was singled out with no legitimate motive AT ALL. I suggest that they review this unacceptable, intrusive, abusive, unfair, discriminatory and humiliating policy. This is even more serious when vulnerable or minority people are singled out for no reason because it perpetuates prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes.Whoever thought this was acceptable should be put in the same position I was today to understand how wrong this is. I am truly disgusted by this experience, and surely I won't be putting one foot in this store anytime soon, if ever. I prefer to pay a bit more and go to places where there is respect for people's rights and liberties. I don't feel that Aldi met these requirements today, and I'm not inclined to go through an episode as egregious as this one again.
Retired 74 year old shopping at Aldi for over 20 years for quality and value until last Friday 5th September.I purchased chicken thighs usual product unavailable, when cooked I found the thigh contained the lower portion of the chicken carcass covered in skin approximately 40% inedible bone so poor quality/value. Their raw meat section now appears to be focused on price not quality so I am moving to another supermarket. Trying to complain is a nightmare seems to be made difficult on purpose to stop complaints, so I am reporting my experience to trading standards for misrepresentation as no mention on the packaging thighs (contains chicken carcass covered in skin).
Love going shopping at aldi farnborough me and my toddler always finding the best treats and bits in the middle isles as well as doing a weekly shop the food prices are brilliant compared to other supermarkets always feel like im getting moneys worth. The new bag check I was surprised about but completely understand now I just show my bags without the staff asking. As once I went in to do a small shop I went to self service felt so bad for the woman as she politely asked to look in a man's shopping bag he showed her then kept calling her horrible swear words she said she's used to it now I think that is awful.
Aldi Hamilton Palace Grounds. Used to enjoy shopping here, prices were great and didn’t mind the service at the checkout because at least it was fast. Yesterday though was awful. Prices now are pretty much on par with other retailers. My store now has self scan checkouts. Not been in a while but had a full trolley, no normal checkouts open so had to go through a selfscan which was a nightmare. After starting the stupid staff member told me I should have asked for a normal till to be opened. No- a normal till should have been open anyway. Worst part is, after constantly having to have a staff member override the system, I got to the payment screen for the staff member to come up behind and tell me she needs to cancel the payment so she can scan through another bag. What??? After struggling to scan a full shop they can’t even overlook an extra cheap bag? Joke of a store!!!
I am writing this review with some measure of regret, having been a shopper at Aldi since not long after their arrival here. Rarely a problem encountered, no parking tickets, always complied with their parking time limits. How quickly things can change.I have received today a parking charge notice number 298875/134204 from Parking Eye relating to a 22 minute stay at their Newquay store while shopping. I should add that I have been using the store for probably ten years, apart from 2024. Each time I have used the car park for shopping and always kept within the time limits. I now find that, having failed to enter my registration number into a terminal, I have breached the parking conditions.I turned left into the car park and saw no signs, other than the ones I am familiar with, to indicate that the system had changed. Why would I look? I use Aldi stores in many areas and have never come across a store where this system is in use. I parked and waited in the car while my wife and grandchildren did the shopping; we then left. They said nothing about the new system meaning that they had not noticed any signage either, not that it would occur to them to look for it. I did not enter the store. My point here is this. Aldi have hundreds if not thousands of stores and I have never before come across one using this system. In the case of this particular store it is in a tourist area meaning that the majority of people using it will not be used to it and may only use it once in a 12 month period. It is the responsibility of Aldi to make sure, through as many means as they can, that users of the car park are aware. To that end:Why are there no large, clear and obvious signs at the car park entrance to make ad hoc users aware and perhaps prevent them entering in the first place. Why are no large, clear and obvious signs in the entrance porch to warn drivers and especially their passengers who could then advise the driver. If this is not a money-making exercise on the part of Aldi, why are there no large, clear and obvious signs at the checkouts to warn people before they leave. Why do the checkout operators, as part of the process they go through with each customer, not check with the customer.I used the store, put money in its tills and took a car park space for 22 minutes. Parking Eye, acting on behalf of. Aldi, now want me to pay £70 for the privilege all for failing to comply with a system I had not encountered before and had no reason to believe was in place. Aldi could and should have done better here to make sure that I and my passengers could not fail to be aware; maybe they didn’t really care?Other supermarkets are available.
I went into store today at Church Crookham to buy an item but was not available in your store. I had just shopped at Home bargains next door. As I was exiting the shop a person (who was in middle of serving a customer) shouted out "I need to search your bag". It was quite abrupt and loud. I was embarrassed therefore refused and told them that I had bought items in shop next door. I continued to exit. 2 security persons approached me in the car park. I was humiliated both in store and outside. I showed the security person my receipts and items. I said that I was angry in the way I was dealt with in the shop. The security person though was pleasant. I just feel that till staff may need more training on the subject.
I bought a too good to go bag. Absolutely disappointed with the content. Not what I was expecting, given it is supposed to pride itself on quality and value. It was full of salad bags, two of the bags were burst and I couldn’t use them. Other crunchy salad boxes had a lot of water at the bottom, so it has started to go off, the only ‘ meat’ item, a chicken layered salad was blown, bacterial growth. Most of them are in the bin.So disappointed, put me off Aldi.
Probably the poorest quality supermarket chain in the UK. Fruit and vegetables are often damaged or rotting. We had a chicken that was within sell by date but smelt terrible when we opened it. I normally buy caged hens eggs because they are proven to have a lower carbon footprint and are better for the environment - Aldi have stopped stocking them. Customer service is hopeless.
