I am a student. I have used Free TT for the past 3 years and each year I had a Form 1098-T for college expenses. No problem. This year Free TT stopped me cold far into the return after I had completed the Education Expenses, and said I could not continue due to the inclusion of schedules/forms and to upgrade to Deluxe to continue. There is nothing different about my 2019 return from my prior years. This is BS. I will never use TT again. Their greed is amazing.
i efiled fed and state on 2/4. IRS Fed accepted. State rejected due to state not being ready. They said to resubmit after 2/7. I did not change anything on my return so I didn't want to resubmit my fed return. I could not figure out how to efile state without efiling the federal too so I went to turbo tax help. There were 2300+ online related discussions. After trolling through the first 50 I decided to try and get a real turbotax person. A TOTALLY FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE. No fricking luck. Nice touch though with the automated attendant typing. After an hour of trying, I just printed out my state tax return and mailed it. Lost $20 for state efile fees. And killed a few trees printing the mess out.
TurboTax is a rip off and a lie! Advertises that doing your basic taxes are free, but actually end up charging you $80 for absolutely nothing! Got all the way through my taxes and elected the free version, also declined all upgrades but still wanted to charge me $40 to file. I had already made it to the end so decided whatever I’ll pay the $40. Elected to have the $40 taken out of my refund check and wanted to charge another $40! So $80 for me inputting all my information. I refused to pay $80 and decided to go on H&R Block instead that advertises to file for free and actually means FREE! Will NEVER use TurboTax again.
Misleading advertising - What they advertise is not what you pay. advertise $40 for federal and then just an asterisk* that says (state is additional). Yeah.... State is also $40. AND, then you have to pay another $40 just to submit your taxes. All and all, it's $120 to file your taxes with TurboTax which is outrageous for an online tax service with a website that (although has a pretty layout and some nice features) also has some spelling and grammar mistakes (very reassuring) and is at time confusing and unclear.... For $120 I can get in-person tax advice and preparation... Actually less for that matter... Last time I am using TurboTax. Not worth it.
The software itself is good and is helpful guiding you through the process of filing your taxes. The misleading portion is where they claim filing is free. It isn't free. Not for filing the state portion. So you pay for the software and you pay for filing your state taxes. Misleading advertising.
Terrible. I was charged $80 when it was supposed to be "free". I Called customer service and was talking to a lady for an hour, and she said they would refund me the money but the supervisor had to do it and she'd add notes to my account. I was transferred to a supervisor and he told me "terms and conditions say this is the best service and you have tried others and we cannot issue you a refund" So, I paid $80. I will be talking to the bank and the IRS about this. COMPLETE SCAM! If I do not get my taxes direct deposited into my account, that will be a whole other issue.
I've had several bad experiences with several of the major tax filing services. I hate that these companies lobby congress to prevent the IRS from allowing free tax filing, instead the companies offer "free tax filing" to those who are lower income but there's a ton of catches to this. I've used TurboTax free file a handful of times, it's quick, easy and helps me find deductions. Everything was great with TurboTax for me up until last year (this review is a bit overdue but better late than never). I went to file my tax return with the TurboTax free edition because I thought it would be free, well my bank returned the direct deposit for my actual tax return and Intuit mailed me a check but they took $100 from it, I was only owed $400 by the IRS but come on intuit why do you need to take $100 from my already low tax return. Thanks for the "free" tax filing software. I definitely will not be using your service again.
Cost me thousands of dollars - program automatically filed in wrong state ( work state vs home state) and resulted in late fees to home state, took over a year to get it straightened out after paying a CPA hundreds of dollars to straighten out. Complained to Vanguard Personal Advisor Services where I downloaded tax software. Stay away from this program. In the end, what was supposed to save lots of money ended up with loss of thousands and over a year of headaches. Painful lesson, I learned just to bite the bullet and pay CPA for tax prep.
