I’m in the US, and I’ve ordered MANY barefoot shoes from almost every overseas barefoot brand. 3 pairs from Bahé, 3 pairs from Bohempia, 6 pairs from Wildling, probably 5 or 6 from Vivo, 2 from Be Lenka. I’ve always had great experiences in spite of them coming from abroad.Until Shapen, that is. I recently decided to buy my first (and last) pair from them. First, they’re pretty expensive for what they are. Then their shipping prices to the US are on the high side. But I decided to take the plunge anyway in spite of their no-return policy for shipments to the US. A few days after they were delivered, I got a text from FedEx telling me I owed them $31.50. I immediately deleted and marked the message as spam, because in my nearly 60 years on this planet, I’ve never seen such a thing. When I then got an email saying the same thing, I realized it was real. It was for duties I supposedly owed to FedEx. It’s bad enough that Shapen didn’t pay the duties themselves like every other overseas barefoot shoe company has for me in the past, but the truly slimy part is that there’s absolutely no mention of it during checkout. Bahé recently started charging to cover tariffs to the US, but they not only told me upfront, it was figured into the price. That way if you don’t want to pay, you have the choice not to buy from them. But Shapen is trying so hard to make a quick buck, they don’t tell you up front so hopefully you’ll still pay their already ridiculous prices.I contacted them, and of course they said "too bad". So I’m fighting it with my credit card company now.I really don’t understand why companies can’t see how their business practices affect them long-term.
I have bought many pairs of shoes here. They are usually not cheap, most of the times around 100 - 150 Euro. However. A pair of sandals for no less than 99,- is showing clear signs of poor quality after just 1 month of wearing them. The material on the sole, where the feet are placed, is going off. After a month! So I sent photos and asked for a solution. Instead of acknowledging the problem and sending me at least a free return label, I would have to send them back on MY OWN cost and then THEY would decide if i am right or wrong. Only then would I get back the money for the return. Sorry, but for sandals in this price category and with pictures clearly showing that the material rubs off, that is poor service! At least a free return, that should be possible with pictures showing proof and after having bought so many shoes here already. Clearly not going to recommend them anymore. I had issues twice with two competitors and they solved it excellently. So I know where I'll buy from now on. A pity, really. Additional note some weeks later: sent the shoes back almost a month ago. Still no reaction. What a great service...We also had one complaint with BeLenka once and recently one with Saguaro boots. No problem at all, they solved it professionally and fast. We'll continue ordering those, but Shapen never again.
I ordered two pairs of the same shoes. One was fine; the other had a warped sole and several visible quality issues that should’ve been caught in inspection. They don’t accept U.S. returns. I sent clear, professional photos, and they acknowledged the defects, claiming this is normal because shoes are "handmade." They claimed the sole would flatten with weight and wear. They offered a 15% refund—despite running a 20% discount on their site. After weeks of trying to fix the sole, nothing changed. I followed up to ask for further refund, and they asked for more photos while wearing the shoe, which was difficult and frustrating. Overall, I don’t trust this company or the quality of their $100+ shoes.
This is a brand that's rarely reviewed, which made me a little nervous before buying. But after two purchases and 4 pairs and 1 return, my experience was overall wonderful. I love these shoes, and return was also no problem. But be careful of sizing, every pair varies.
Terrible customer service, illogical sizing of shoes.I bought three pairs of shoes from this brand. First one was a sneaker, size 41, the second two pairs of sandals, the same size. The sneaker fit me ok, but was on the short side. The sandals in the same size were two sizes too big. Turns out the brand uses different sizing for different models, which is completly illogical. When I wrote a review for their website id didn't appear there.Later the sneakes seam ripped after minimal use. I sent the shoes back, but they couldn't send the replacement, as it wasn't available in the same colour. I asked to wait for the shoes to be in stock again, refused. I asked if I could get a size bigger, and they refused. Was offered a different colour, which I didn't like. Their only solution was to refund the money and suggest I buy another pair. The pair I bought was with a discout so I asked for a solution in which I won't be the one spending extra time checking for when the shoes will be back in stock and extra money buying them. In the end they refunded me the money without my consent, claiming that they have done so hours before my last reply was sent in the conversation with customer service. The email confirming the transation came half a day later than my last reply.I've never written a bad review before, but this was all in all a very unsatisfactory experience. Worst with online shopping yet. To be avoided.
Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with the return shipment. The shoes were sadly not accepted even though they were only tried on briefly at home. It is therefore important to check the condition when unpacking. It was assumed that the shoes had been worn by me. One issue was that the leather was slightly creased. But how can you ever return shoes that crease easily when you try them on quickly?A small hole was discovered on the edge of the sole - I assume that this was caused during production.
The shoes from this store are so badly designed I could not even put on the shoe. The size is fine-but the upper was so tight, one cannot even slide the foot in. No zipper, no stretch, no elastic. Tried to exchange/return but only received snide, rude customer service. The design is misleading-with pointless straps that loosen/tighten nothing. Purely decorative. I ended up donating a pair brand new unworn shoes-but I can't imagine who could possibly wear them considering how poorly they are designed. Will never buy from this store again.
