If you're looking for a private and secure email provider, Tuta is one of very few options, and in my opinion, the best! Tuta is a relatively small company that doesn't market itself as aggressively as its competitors (looking at you, Proton). Despite its size, Tuta offers a feature set that works very well. You get encrypted mails, contacts, and calendar, and they are working on a drive option as well. Within the privacy community, Tuta has earned people's trust, including mine. So, if you care about companies and government not being able to read your mails, give it a shot. One note on many of the negative reviews here: Yes, Tuta is slightly slower than, let's say, Gmail. That's due to the encryption. Gmail doesn't encrypt, and worse, scans every single email you receive and send. For a few more seconds of waiting, you can prevent this from happening. I've been with Tuta since 2016 and the support has always been great so far! I've recently had an issue where I couldn't delete two calendars I had subscribed to. It took a few days to solve this issue, as it was clearly a new bug. But the support team was lovely and very responsive. After a couple of days, the issue was resolved and all my questions were answered. To sum up, I can only recommend Tuta!
Best tool for privacy.I love that it is one solution that covers it all - you decide if the mail needs to be end-to-end encrypted or not. If not, the mail and responses are just like any normal mail.If you encrypt the main, the receiver gets a mail with a link to the online encrypted mail including all previous mails from you. This is really good.Including a calendar that seems to become better all the time.
Ugly and not intuitive UI. It's hard to understand how in 2025 still they don't improve their interface to help users to join tuta.comI keep paying for the service because the email works and the few times I contacted them I got an answer to fix my problem (due to some wild updates).I can only recommend it to people who work in IT because the user interface is not easy to use.
Very, very slow, or no response from support on major issues. “Refused” emails returned with no intelligible reason for it. Sorry, but Tuta just isn’t a reliable replacement for Gmail for now. I despise Google, so I’m still looking for a reliable alternative.
I purchased the email service from tuta and was immediately locked out of my account. I contacted the company through customer support and was ask to provide proof of payment. I promptly did so and was told thats not good enough. I actually provided them a copy of my bank statement that shows the purchase. After that the company never would communicate with me. A year later I get notified by my bank of a tutamail charge. I contacted the company again regarding this latest charge and got no reply. These people are crooks and are not interested in customer satisfaction. All one needs to do is search this company and you will find many customers like myself. Tutamail is located in Hanover Germany. I guess they feel isolated from their customers in the US and get away with stealing from us.
Had a free account and the app for >6 months. This worked well and seemed secure. I liked that my iPhone anccess code was required to open the app. All this until: the app abruptly quit being accessible, and no recovery code was sent to my recovery email and support did not return messages and appeared to be dunning me for money in order to access. I was declared “offline” ( which I wasn’t) and that “the server couldn’t be accessed”. They would not send a recovery code to a recovery email.I find this unprofessional, high-handed, opaque, unresponsive, greedy.I deleted the app ( but of course lost some valuable correspondence and contacts)
In my attempt to de-Google this year I found them and appreciate them immensely! I genuinely love Tuta for what they are setting out to do. Also of note, any time I have ever had to message support (even just like.. a random question), they are super friendly and fast. The only reason I am giving 4 stars vs 5 is because I chose Tuta because of the calendar feature and the fact that it has the ability to add birthdays. For some reason, I can't get my birthdays to show up as expected when I add them to the contact and have to manually add them to the calendar outside of the little birthday label. However, legitimately everything else works as expected and the peace of mind I have with them is sooo worth a teensy little inconvenience. They have a lovely spam filter that works well and plenty of settings to mess around in. Seriously though; reject convenience, prioritize your privacy!
