Unfair Europcar rip off

As we've said many times yes we signed a contract but we were told an untrue story about our luggage which was not corroborated by their other 2 depots namely our luggage was too big. The other depots both said we should not have been charged more for the car and they hadn't heard of any luggage laws as told to us.1. We asked the guy in Edinburgh to try our luggage in the car we hired but he refused. He told us there were restrictions on putting luggage on the rear seat (a small carry on bag) He also told us the police were on the lookout for hire cars doing this on the North Coast 500, not knowing the laws we believed him. But I haven't seen any corroboration on the internet to say this is true.2. We went to Inverness to swap our car as instructed by Europcar's head office via email.3. Inverness advised us he had not heard from head office and advised us to keep going as smaller cars are like hens teeth. What did they expect us to do? We had already paid $1900aus and had pre booked accommodation.4. We only signed because we had to have something because we were booked ahead.5. At no time after we went to Inverness depot were we instructed to go back for a smaller car which we would have done. So why were we instructed to go to Inverness only to find no car available, and why weren't we told to come back the next day or at some other time...were we expected to walk around Scotland??All of the above borders on a shonky deal and we have been trying to resolve this since April 24th....how long does it take. The contract was signed after we assumed the story we were told was true but since found out it was dubious at best so....if you sign a contract under wrong assumptions it should be voided. Was the initial amount we paid not considered? The car had lollies and other packets in the glove box...the guy in Edinburgh said we might have to fill up with Adblue which we had to do on the first fill of the tank....this should be done by Europcar not the customer...there was no manual in the car so we could not learn anything about how the controls worked. We would never recommend Europcar to anyone, quite the opposite especially when we have been fobbed off with the phrase "but you signed the contract" so even though we were told a story to get us into a bigger car which we didn't want and didn't order it doesn't matter to Europcar? We booked a Citroen C3 or similar and we would have easily fit our luggage in that sized car. When we took the car back to Manchester Trafford Park the man who took delivery of the car was called Usama and he told us we should not have to put Adblue in the car as it's Europcar's job to do it...he said the guy in Edinburgh might have lied to get a bigger bonus...he said we would be reimbursed for the Adblue and the bond money both of which we are yet to see. Thanks,Peter Brock

Absolutely Appalling Experience – Deceptive and Dishonest from Start to Finish

My entire experience with Europcar has been nothing short of shocking and deeply disappointing. Upon arriving at the rental desk, I was told that my reservation was "blocked" without any clear explanation, despite having a confirmed booking through Carflexi. I was then told I had no choice but to pay double the original price (for a new contract) for a different vehicle on the spot. Feeling pressured and stranded, I had no other choice than to comply. What followed was a series of deceitful and contradictory actions that made it clear this was not an isolated incident, but rather what felt like a systematic scam. The agent handling my rental, someone named Sheikh, presented a false "upgrade" that I had never agreed to, and I was misled about what I was actually being charged for. It later turned out that I had been mistakenly identified as someone else with the same name, which Europcar themselves admitted in writing, confirming the error was entirely on their side. However, when I requested a refund for the extra charges caused by their own mistake, Europcar refused to accept any further responsibility. They effectively cut off communication and showed no willingness to resolve the issue, leaving me with no option but to escalate the case to the European Car Rental Conciliation Service (ECRCS).To make matters worse, days after ECRCS confirmed I would be refunded £157 for the unjustified upgrade fee, Europcar attempted to charge my card an additional £142 without my consent. The only reason this unauthorized charge failed was because I had already transferred all remaining funds from that account, leaving no balance for them to take. I then had to urgently contact my bank and request the card be frozen to prevent any further attempts. This added yet more stress and time to an already exhausting situation.I have never in my life encountered a company that operates with such blatant disregard for honesty, accountability, and customer trust. I strongly urge others to avoid Europcar, especially at this location (London, Heathrow), unless you are prepared to be deceived, overcharged, and ignored when things go wrong.

Money taken from my account without permission

The actual car rental was fine and smooth. After I returned the car , a payment of £10.13 was taken from my account without my knowledge. Tried calling several times and I’ve been going round in circles, last call someone actually answered then I was given a recording for a survey and they hung up. In effect, if they want money from you they will pick up other than that they are not interested.

Worst company ever.

Worst company ever. Customer service is a waste of time.they all need retraining in customer service, we had a car from europcar through motability. Took the car back to the dealership when I picked my own car up at 10.30am. Took europcar four weeks to txt me to say their was damage to the left passenger door, no damage when I returned the car , opened a dispute .no communication whatsoever, then recieves a letter saying damage was caused at 1.15 pm how they knew the time the damage was caused is beyond me , I returned the car at 10.30 yet the damage was caused at 1.15? They couldn't answer my question as to how do they know the time the damage was supposed to have taken place, still in a dispute .until they can prove i caused the damage when I didn't even have the car .Avoid this company

So unbelievably bad (use Avis instead)

So unbelievably bad it's shocking. My first experience with them was a year or so ago when I booked a van to move house. They cancelled the night before and ruined everything. Unfortunately I had forgotten this when I booked a car for a weekend away recently. I thought I had paid for everything online (about £200 for 4 days I think) only to be charge over £150 more when I got to the airport (Manchester). I was also told they were offering a "deal" on an upgrade to an automatic - they told me the *upgrade* was an extra £100/day usually but that they'd reduced it to £40 as an offer. Not only am I fairly sure this was a lie (it's not £100/per day more online), the *per day* part was said very quietly. Then they gave me an automatic anyway! A few weeks later I got an admin fee of £45. I believe it easily cost more than double what Avis would have charged (I have used them before and they were honest and transparent and I highly recommend them). This felt like a scam. I'm still angry over a month later.

Watch out for this Europcar scam.

Watch out for this Europcar scam. I hired a car in Thailand was NOT the car I paid for and had 130,000 miles on it with as you can imagine quite a bit of damage. However that’s not the worst Eurocar scam to look out for. I have just had money taken out of my account almost 2 months after the hire for an undisclosed reason , my communications and phone calls resulted in them basically telling me it’s not their problem and for me to deal with it so Europcar are saying it’s not Europcars problem you need to speak to Europcar. A total scam and absolutely not willing to help anyone resolve the issue so likely an orchestrated and common occurrence. Best approach would be to not use them and be careful with other car rentals . Que the standard general response below

They’re a scam - do not use

I have used Europcar for several years and never had a problem (renting around 8weeks per year) however my last trip to Bordeaux was appalling My flight was moved and I contacted the helpline to inform them - on arrival they had no record of the call and had issued my car to someone else.I was then given an old beat up dirty black 4x4 which had marks dents and scratches everywhere - inside and out.The member of staff laughed about the condition of the vehicle , but time pressing I went with the flow On returning I’ve been charged €700 for a ridiculous scuff on a door - there is no way that it could have been seen prior and the member of staff rubbed the door so much that they inflicted the majority of the damage whilst I stood there. I have 4 further bookings with Europcar which I will be cancelling this week and wouldn’t ever use again

BEWARE - Lisbon Airport

BEWARE - I have been mis sold additional insurance and roadside assistance although I kindly refused the offer of the sales guy. Documents only available in Portuguese and I was clearly lied to as when querying charges I was told I am signing for returnable deposit and not for additional charges. Customer service not interested as I put my signature on the piece of paper :( If you, like me, choose Europcar for their professionalism and customer service, maybe look at alternatives

Extremely disappointed

I booked a specific car class but was downgraded without any explanation. Not only was the replacement vehicle smaller and less comfortable, but I was also never offered a refund or compensation for the downgrade. My reservation number is 1182910408, Customer service has been unhelpful and unresponsive. This experience was frustrating and completely unacceptable — I expected better. I won’t be booking with them again.
