Beware of deceptive practices and lack of transparency from Europcar. They offered me a better car than the one I had ordered online when i picked it up at London Gatwick in November 2025 but they never mentioned the additional charges. I assumed I was agreeing to a holding deposit which would be returned. I did not agree to any additional charges at all nor did they inform me of any in person. They claim I have signed the form agreeing to this. They have been deceptive. Please do be warned about this if you hire from them. Shocking practices from a known car hire company.
Absolutely appalling, I can’t believe this company is still in business. They cancelled my reservation and just told me I can’t get a refund because it was booked on a non refundable rate? Please please please read the reviews before using this company. Go elsewhere
My insurance company arranged a courtesy vehicle for me through a third party and unfortunately they booked my vehicle with Europcar. Once I no longer needed it I arranged for the vehicle to be collected. They collected it 6 days later and have since tried to say I caused damage to the vehicle despite photos to the contrary. Further more they billed me for fuel. However they billed me and took the money from my bank account twice. I have now been trying nearly two weeks to get this money back, and despite sending them their invoices and evidence that they have took money from me twice I am still waiting for the refund. Their staff are useless and give assurances they cant keep to. The latest email from them tells me due to unusual circumstances it is taking longer than usual to sort out my complaint. Avoid them like the plague. useless company to deal with. 1 star is too generous!!
I’m not going to say anything that, literally, thousands of people haven’t already said. Utterly atrocious company. Absolute scammers. People should be ashamed to work for them. Disgraceful that, presumably via bung, they’ve been able to secure public sector contracts when their moral compass is about as reliable as their death trap cars. Book with them and you are almost certainly going to be scammed for damage you did not cause and charged for fuel you did not use. Shameful outfit.
I found Bristol south great for hiring a car. A trainee booked us in and patiently got our wayz to link to the car, the car was lovely and no problems during the week. The same man recognised us when we came back and quickly checked the car so we could go home without any delays. Also the ladies toilet was very clean! This is the second time we have hired a car from them and will use them again.
Abysmal. Sent me a notice to my neighbour that I owed some money- it was only around £25 so paid it. Received another letter, again going to my neighbours instead of me, even though they assured me that my correct address had now been updated on the system on the previous telephone call. That letter said I still owed money. Phoned their collection team who agreed, that it had been paid and confirmed the receipt that was sent to me and to ignore letter. Well blow me over with a feather, same neighbour knocked on my door this evening and handed me another letter saying I still owed the money and have 7 days to pay.I have no option to raise a complaint as this company needs to start being accountable for its atrocious and abysmal service. Please avoid and if your insurance company use Europcar for courtesy cars- trust me your better off walking till your vehicle is fixed.
I would give zero stars if I could. I also wish I had read the reviews before I hired a car. Although I will also say that I didn't go through europcar direct. We hired through I third party company and found out the day before we travelled this is who we would be getting a car from. Basically everything everyone has said is exactly what happened to me at Edinburgh airport. When we arrived to check in, we were upside the insurance. I agreed to the middle insurance but it wasn't until later (they spelt my name wrong in my email so I never got the paperwork) I noticed they had charged me for the premium one. They also charged me for 14 days when we only had the car for 7. I have been trying to speak with customer services who seem helpful on the phone but I've made multiple calls, sent numerous emails and am still chasing. They keep promising that a refund is coming but I'm not holding my breath. None of the numbers add up on any of the paperwork now that I've had it sent to the right email address. All in all its cost me nearly £1000 to hire a car for a week. Avoid at all costs
A very difficult company to deal with. Clearly they don’t care…just look at all the negative reviews. Was provided with a rental car from them under my AA car insurance policy after a “no fault claim.” AA claim service was consistently good only to be let down by poor and indifferent customer service by these people. Trying to get car picked up at end of claim but badly let down after waiting in all morning and most of afternoon. No real ETA given beyond if they could pick the car up tomorrow and have us wait in yet again! Try ringing their customer service- 10 minutes for their central line to answer only to be put into a phone queue after my security details were checked and passed. Gave up after 25 minutes of being told “that my call was important and would be answered soon.” They only acted once I had subsequently contacted AA claims for assistance (who also couldn’t get their call answered!) After AA insurance kindly escalated the issue it was then finally dealt with within an hour. AA would never use Europcar if they know how bad their customer service was. AA 5*, Europcar 0.5*
Booked and prepaid a Europcar rental online at booking.com from Manchester Airport. This was an extension of my stay in the UK for a family medical emergency, and because of the open ended nature of such things I didn’t yet have a return flight to the US booked. When I arrived at Manchester Airport rental center to collect the car, I faced down the usual flurry of suggested vehicle and insurance upgrades, provided license, ID and credit card, and was then asked for my return ticket. Which I don’t have. The person at the desk promptly canceled the booking, leaving me stranded. No recourse was offered or suggested. When asking to see a supervisor, the desk person stated that they know the rules and that anyway there is no supervisor. Then I was shown a laminated computer printed sheet listing an airline ticket as a requirement. The desk person casually stated that I would need to take any refund request to booking.com, and I was sent on my way. Next customer!I am still dealing with booking.com on the matter of a refund and that’s a whole different topic. As it happens I was able to find a car at another car rental company in the same rental center, albeit at a premium price. At no point in my booking at booking.com was a return airline ticket required (as demonstrated by the fact I had already completed and prepaid the booking without one), and although technically Europcar may have this requirement in the small print, even after explaining my situation to the desk person, no help was offered. Come on Europcar, show a little humanity. Terrible experience, never again if I can help it Europcar.
You promise to get back to me within a week after written complains, but you dont. I call you and you promise to solve my case within 24 hours. After three days I call you back again and once again you promise to get back to me during the day, that was five days ago, still no reply. We learnt our lesson to never ever rent a car from Europcar again.
