AVOID - Europcar are failing and turning on customers

AVOID - classic car rental scammers which thought was a thing of the past! Wish I read these reviews before hiring from these terrible people. They are purposely very unclear about the upgrade costs, for example, I was told I could upgrade to a banged up SUV for EUR50, when in fact it was 50 per day plus 20% VAT! Charging almost 3x my original booking. I simply asked if there was a car with a slightly larger boot for the same price and they gave me options, but quoting only the daily price as the difference in cost with no mention it was a daily price. I found this out after I’d returned home and the card was charged. I had signed the French documents and they made no effort to explain the full additional cost that I signed up to. They appear friendly and it’s Europcar so you let your guard down. But these guys are filthy, cowardly, young cowboys conning family’s on holiday. It’s disgusting. Customer service is responsive but completely useless, hiding behind T’s and C’s and not giving a dot about customer service or ethics. Can’t believe these guys are allowed to continue - although Europcar are haemorrhaging money at the moment so maybe this is them trying to claw back… i predict europcar demise… They will reply to this with some rubbish saying contact customer services (UK & France) - I already have and they are just as bad as the young lads in Marseille.

Horrible company, avoid!

Horrible company, was never made aware of the premium charge that is snuck in with the document they get you to sign at the desk. Woman at the Luton airport location told me I was only paying for my deposit. Suddenly an extra £181 charge was added on. Customer service was no help at all.

The lowest rated company on Trustpilot?

Prepaid €180 for 6 days car hire from Bristol Airport. This was done on the Europcar app. On arrival to collect the car i told the agent "I do not want to take out any further insurance, I just want the basic prepaid cover"Agent asked me to sign paperwork, didn't have a lawyer with me nor time to read small print. All very pleasant, car was lovely, service was good. Assumed I had paid a deposit as led to believe.6 days later return the car, all in order. Asked the same agent when do we get the deposit back, in front of myself and my wife, he states this normally takes 3 - 4 days for funds to clear. Checks bank account, it's pending. 4 days later £264 is taken, literally lifted from my account. Complaint goes in, agent on complaints department said he will do everything to return my money. A few days later case closed, I had signed for and taken out Super Cover Insurance (£264!!!) So after purposely requesting no added insurance it was added. I was scammed for not checking what I had signed, misled into thinking it was a standard deposit. My bank account covers car hire insurance excess so why on earth would I pay extra for it? Outrageous behaviour from Europcar. Case continues

Ripped off

I rented a Vauxhall Corsa for a week from Europcar Slough whilst mine was in the garage & I needed a car to visit my mum in hospital. The car was a year old, all the alloys were scuffed & scratched. When I returned it, the assistant advised that she would check the car later. I didn't argue as my mum was coming home & I needed to be there. I was pestered with emails for a week asking for feedback & then nothing for a month while they were still holding onto my deposit. To my amazement, I then get a insurance letter saying one of the tyres was torn/ripped. I have now received a bill for £208 for a tyre for a Corsa - more than the cost of the week's hire. If you dare hire from this 2nd rate hire co., take pictures when you get the car, when you return it & definitely get the assistant to check the car with you before you give them the keys back. Lastly, check that the fuel tank is really full when you pick it up. I ended up putting 40 miles more fuel in the car when I returned it & funnily enough the mileage is not mentioned on their hire paperwork.

Scammed on insurance - watch out!

I was told the full insurance cover was £25 when I clarified by asking is that £12.50 per day for the two days the staff at the Lancing office said yes. He then rushed me through signing the paper work and assured me the deposit and the £25 extra for insurance was all combined in my additional payment.When I got home half hour later I looked at the receipt and saw I had been charged £64!I immediately called the number, spent over an hour waiting and then told the was no longer anyone at the office and customer service couldn't do anything about it and I'd have to lodge a complaint with customer service again after the car hire has finished. They said that because I sighed the paperwork they won't do anything.I honestly feel I have been scammed and I will be reporting this to the ombudsman if this is not rectified. I will never use this company again

I had a very disappointing experience…

I had a very disappointing experience with Europcar. I arrived on time to pick up my car, but the staff refused to give it to me, saying they were closing and had already locked the keys away — even though my booking clearly showed a 1 pm pickup, and I had already completed the online check-in for a faster process.Europcar’s own system allowed me to make this booking for Saturday at 1 pm, so it is unacceptable that their staff then refused to hand over the car. I submitted a complaint explaining that I was there on time, but their staff did not provide the vehicle.To make matters worse, Europcar later attempted to charge me £102 for a “no-show,” even though it was entirely their fault. After further emails, they finally refunded the money — but there was no apology or compensation for the inconvenience caused.It is disappointing that Europcar can take money without providing the service and then offer nothing to make it right. This experience has completely destroyed my trust in the company.

Unacceptable Vehicle Condition & Poor Customer Service – Avoid Europcar

I was provided a replacement van by Europcar following a vehicle collision, and the experience was extremely disappointing.The van was in poor condition; dirty, visibly damaged, and clearly not suitable for professional use. It had food remnants in the seats, rust, scratches, and chemical residue in the tailgate. Europcar admitted it was one of their older vehicles but still deemed it acceptable for hire.To make matters worse, I was incorrectly charged £22 for fuel, despite returning the van with a full tank and providing proof. Europcar acknowledged the error but still took the money from my account and told me to wait up to 10 working days for a refund.I raised a formal complaint and requested compensation for the time, stress, and disruption caused including the impact on my health and professional responsibilities. Despite clear evidence and acknowledgment of their failings, Europcar refused to offer any compensation and closed the case.As a senior manager in a global company, I expect a basic level of service and accountability. Europcar failed on both counts.I would not recommend Europcar to anyone seeking reliable, professional service — especially for insurance-related rentals.

DO NOT TRUST! They steal property.

I had a car for hire via a third party. It took them three weeks to actually collect the car, took 5 hours longer than they said they would and to add insult to injury, my property was stolen.I completely forgot I had left a work bag and NHS coat in the car. The guy collecting it went back to my very trusted neighbours house ( I had to go out) to say there was stuff in the car but didn't bring it back with him.My neighbour found it weird that the bag was slightly open and confused why the collecting driver didn't bring the items back with him when discovering them. I later discovered my NHS ipad was missing. It was very obvious this was not a personal ipad and belongs to the NHS. Norwich never answered the phone in the morning to discuss this further so my friend went down in person on my behalf. The customer advisor was incredibly rude, didn't seem to care and didn't try to assist in any way. The advice was to speak to the collections team.I called the branch and managed to get through the following day, chatted with a very lovely lady and suddenly a male voice started shouting down the phone at me, threated to report me to the NHS and the police ( not really sure why!) I tried to explain I was trying to get the item back, I tried to explain that I hadn't raised my voice or shouted so he didn't need to speak to me like that, he continued to shout more and then hung up the phone. He never let me explain that for reporting the stolen property, I have follow a process.
