Be very careful with Hertz at Lanzarote airport. They provide a car with lots of small scratches and dents which are very difficult to check on the hire documents photos. Then when you return they find one more small dent (barely visible) and claim it is a new dent. I asked if the woman who checked our car on return if she gets paid a commission for every new dent or scratch she can find. She would not answer my question but this makes me suspect she does. This is my first and last time using Hertz and I will go back to using Avis or Sixt.
I have used Hertz several times over the years and been happy but something has gone seriously wrong with the business. I hired a car in Fuerteventura and returned it to be told it was 'damaged' - a barely visible indentation on the driver's door (I have photographs of my own which they did not like me taking). For this I was charged €140 ('the minimum') on my credit card. I protested strongly and was told I should have taken out their extra insurance. The 'damage' could have been on the car when I got it, two other worse areas of damage were pointed out but this was so slight with no mark on the paintwork it could easily have been overlooked. Even if the 'damage' was caused during my rental it would cost nothing like €140 to put right (I have showed my pictures to a friend who does car bodywork repairs).I thought one went to one of the better known car hire firms and paid a premium to avoid nonsense like this, but it appears not, they will screw you one way or the other; either you take out their extortionate insurance package or they will just take the money anyway. The only slight comfort is that the insurance would have cost me more than €140, doesn't stop me feeling I have been robbed though. One other lesson, never use Hertz to hire a car again.
UPDATE: Hertz have now contacted me and reduced the charge to €16.59 for fuel plus €16.50 refuelling fee. I think that this is fair and it's a pity that it wasn't done automatically so that I didn't need to make a complaint. We hired a car for 5 days and I was told that €81.95 was the maximum I would be charged if I didn't return it with a full tank. We drove 419 Kms in total and refilled the tank with €25 of fuel before returning to the airport but because it was 5.00 am and dark we didn't try to find a petrol station nearer the airport so the tank was not completely full on returning the car. It would have needed no more than €10 but I expected to be charged about €25. I was horrified to be charged the full €81.95. I wish I hadn't bothered putting in the extra €25. So it cost €105 in fuel to drive 419 Kms. BEWARE
For 30 years I have been renting cars worldwide on a regular basis. I also control the car rentals in my company on four continents. So far I have had good experiences with Hertz. Until now! Ordered a car at Madrid airport ("Gold Plus - Five Star"). Shortly after car pick-up, I noticed that a rear distance sensor was faulty and regularly triggered false alarms. Car returned. Long wait again. Only one employee on site for office and vehicles ("back in 10 min"). Car exchange finally promised, but for smaller one than booked and payable, after protest then finally got a car of the same type. When returning, the employee went around the vehicle and checked the condition "meticulously". Nothing found in the apparently damage-free car after the first round of “inspection”. Then another round. Then he pointed to some dirt on a rim and said the rim had some damage that I would have to pay for. I couldn't believe it, but it shouldn't be fun. Did I make photos when I took over the car? Of course not, because there was no damage at all now and then. The employee was not interested in the fact that the dirt could be removed with a finger. He had already taken his photos and claimed EUR 66 + VAT. The credit card would simply be charged accordingly. I asked the employee to confirm my protest in writing, which he refused to do. I asked the employee to give me his full name, which he also refused. I only received a preliminary statement with an additional item "damage". Since there were obvious circumstances of fraud, I went straight to the police station at the airport, which is also located in Terminal 1. I was received kindly there and told that I was not the first one to deal with that kind of matter. Rental cars are a matter of trust. Fraud destroys trust, even if the amount swindled is small. In any case, under the experienced circumstances, I will neither privately, nor will the company I run rent cars from Hertz again.Update on 28/01/2022: After a longer email communication with the local agency and the customer service, including the analysis of photographs and another inspection of the vehicle, I finally received the following message from Hertz: "I am happy to inform you that you were correct and the vehicle was not scratched but dirty. We request a refund of the wrongly charged amount immediately and apologize for any inconvenience caused."Considering the apology from Hertz and assuming that the local agent worker is held accountable by Hertz for causing this problem, I give 2 stars instead of 1. It would have been 5 stars without the offence when returning the car.
Firefly=Bandits!!!Firefly=Bandits!!!...HERTZ owns FireflyDon`t accept Rentalcars insurance at Barcelona airport 22 september 2021 and forced me to pay 160eur for new inssurance. They charge my card 2 times with 40eur 2 month afther! In 1 november and 15 november!Never use FIREFLY again and i asked my self why RENTALCARS have this company in the list???
Santiago de compostela - extra charges after drop offI've just returned from a trip from Santiago Spain and received an extra charge, claiming damage to the bumper. As it was a early drop off I made sure to do a walk around and take a video of the car - there's no damage!Beware. They will rip you off if you don't take the extra insurance!Of course I'm disputing the charge but not sure if it'll get anywhere
Thank you for an excellent experience. We returned our car to Alicante Airport this morning and had a very swift handover of our car. The car we had been given was a free upgrade less than 2000 km on the clock and a lovely drive. The only negative point was the length of time we had to wait queuing to pick up the car but other than we were impressed with service we received. Thank you.
Wonderful service. Professional and courteous problem solving team. I’ve driven a car that under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have been able to rent . The car was spotlessly clean and ready, located very near the Hertz booth. I cannot think how this rental experience could have been bettered. Thank you so much.
£200+ for a 1.5 cm 'dent' that is in fact a photo flash. Please listen to the 50+ people that went out of their way to tell you how nasty this company is. Our experience: when returning the car a smiley lady told us that we couldn't wait there for a post-rental car evaluation and we had to go. We flew home to find out that they had charged us £200+ for a 'dent' that is in fact a a photo flash. If you want to be ripped off, this is your place.
I travel frequently and rent cars. This has been the worst car rental experience for me.After a long trip from US to Spain with four kids, we ended up renting an expensive luxury car, which I will not even mention how we got there. After waiting for around two hours in Madrid airport car rental parking lot with our luggages, we were able to get the car. I signed the rental papers BEFORE I saw the car. The pictures in the agreement supposedly show the condition of the car before we rented the car. I couldn’t pay attention to every detail of the car, especially look all the way down at the front of the car to see a small damage which is very hard to notice on a black car in a dark parking lot after 20 hour trip.We drove the car with extreme caution without getting a scratch for ten days and when we returned the car we were told that there was a small damage which I only could see after I was told.I later checked the document that I signed: the car in the pictures is not even shown with a visible plate number. How do I know it is the same car that I rented? I also cannot see in the picture the part of the car where there is damage. How can I notice if I can’t see that part of the car?We had to pay $500 for that small damage.Be aware of these guys when you rent, I will definitely pursue this case. They take advantage of their guests.
