We recently rented a vehicle from Hertz at Seville Airport. We had an excellent experience - because we researched A TON, read 100s of awful reviews and made sure we had enough coverage. We rented through ADAC in Germany - I even joined ADAC for 54,00 Euro per year in order to get the coverage. When we arrived at the counter, we were greeted very warmly and were told that we had nothing to worry about because we had booked the Total Coverage through ADAC. Having said that, it was 539 Euro for 17 days. You simply have to pay enough so that they don't try to upsell you. Very smooth transition/experience with Hertz.
Rented a car from Hertz for our family holiday in August 2025. A most horrible experience from start to finish. Avoid these scammers at all costs. I pre ordered a manual transmission car 2 months in advance and when picked up was told there was only automatic available take it or leave it. Took photos of the car and a video which showed the extensive dents scratches and dings all over the car. When returning they looked and looked all over to find some damage and eventually I was informed that there was a scratch on the car that I caused! This so called scratch was so small and hard to see that it couldn’t be seen in my photos or video. I contested but they wouldn’t listen. Extremely rude and aggressive staff member. Obviously they are on commission for filing damages. I was charged €242.50 + handling charge of €3 for this non existent damages. Had to leave for our flight and picked up the issue with them when back home. They wouldn’t answer emails or calls. To ad insult they kept my full €300 deposit because apparently this is outlined in the small print of the contract so I was told in an anonymous email response from their customer service over 3 weeks later after 13 emails sent. Never again. These were the most expensive car hire company at time of booking but I opted to pay the extra for peace of mind. Hertz Palma airport or scammers. Avoid at all costs.

RIP-OFF and humility! First of all, the insurance is double the amount of renting, second, they like to humiliate people, like you go to theyr desk and beg for a car. They don’t treat you as a customer, they treat you like a begger! Never renting from them ever again!!! O prefer the bus!
I hired a car from Hertz in Bilbao, Spain. Do NOT trust the online quote you receive. When I returned the car an additional TP insurance was charged and the manager at the office in Bilbao city centre did not want to help to resolve this matter. This was the same person who accepted the online quote on collection of the car. I have complained to Hertz who provided me a breakdown of costs which didn’t add up. EU consumer law needs to be tightened to protect customers against this kind of practice.
I rented a car at Barcelona Airport and had already paid for the rental online. After returning the car without any damage, we went home. Two days later, I saw that they had charged 190 euros to my card. I don’t know why. No explanation and no way to see the reason on the invoice. I cannot contact support by phone, and their reply by email is basically just a copy of the invoice I asked them to explain. Further communication and replies to their response have simply been ignored on their part. NEVER USING HERTZ AGAIN!
I will never rent a car at Hertz again. The drop off process isn’t safe. And after returning the car at the drop of at Malaga Airport no one checker the card. They just told us to drop the keys in the box. And afterwards we got a claim for a damage that wasn’t there when we left the car and the photo showing the alleged damage is blurry. The customer service doesn’t reply to our email. So no recommendation from us!
Having turned up at Corvera airport at Thrifty rental desk we checked in and went through the paperwork. I showed the man that I had excess insurance already so did not need any further cover which he accepted. I used my credit card for the deposit and off I went.It was only when I returned home and they debited my credit card with extra insurance cover. As the agent saw I had cover and even said I didnt need anything else he clearly then debited my card intentionally to rip me off.... I booked via Discover cars who want nothing to do with my complaint and told me to 'sort it myself' with Thrifty..... I wont be using either again!Update to above post:Thrifty/Hertz have now tried to insinuate that the fee charged was a parking fee that was pointed out when the rental agreement was signed. They are saying that I am paying a fee for the parking of the car at the Thrifty depot before it was collected! The car was collected at the time that was requested on the booking so either you new pay for their parking costs at the airport or they are lying.... Im assuming the latter as the charge is for 'smart cover' which apparently is charged when you dont want your credit card debited with a deposit. This was not requested as my CC has plenty of available credit and this charge has been levied covertly. Unbelievable that such a company can be so dishonest and get away with it.
