NEVER HIRE FROM THE BIG COMPANIES. THEY RIP YOU OFF

After being ripped off by Gold car and various other high profile rental car companies peddled by sites like Booking.com and Easyjet etc we thought we'd try going for what we thought might be a step up by going with a long established company like Hertz. Wow never again! What started out as an advertisement on easyjet app for £168 for a 1 week hire of a compact car ended up costing us almost €600!!!! on arrival to collect the car. They have hidden fees galore. Ok yes we were travelling from Barcelona to Malaga but we were never warned about all the extra fees this would incur until we got there. By then we had planned our whole trip so couldn't change things. One fee was even described on the receipt as ' upsell insurance ' !! I mean Seriously. These companies are out to rip you off. My advice. Book with a little local rental company. In Malaga these are - PATRY CARS and MALAGA CARS. both amazing. No upselling insurance , No blocks on your credit card, just honest down to earth companies. AUTOREISON in the canary islands are also good.

Higher price, smaller car advised when I checked-in online

I booked through Holiday Autos but when Hertz emailed me to accept the booking they stated that they wanted an extra £25 and the car was smaller.I wouldn't have minded so much if the change was highlighted but it was hidden in the email (I already had a booking voucher with the lower price and larger car). I could have turned up at the airport and got caught. Contacting them to sort it out was not easy so I ended up cancelling and booking with Sixt who have been great in the past.Update as a result of Hertz response to a complaint that I raised - I was simply asked to contact another department (no ownership of the issue). Be advised that you may get the run around if you use Hertz.

Hertz Malaga Airport are con artists charging additional unjustified fees and false damage fees

We had hired and pre-paid for a Polestar (a prestiage electric 4x4/cross over) from Hertz via Auto Europe for one week. On arrival at the Hertz desk at Malaga Airport the rude Hertz employee said that we were late and so they had given our car away! I said that our flight had been delayed and so our time of arrival was outside of our control and in any event we had pre-paid for the car for a week so they were not entitled to just give it away. She said that if we had booked direct with Hertz they would have kept the car but because we booked via an agent/comparison site they gave the car away. When I pointed out that if I had booked direct they would have charged more than the agent charged for the same car, the rude clerk just shrugged and essentially said that is what you get for using an agent. It was clear I was going to get nowhere arguing and so I asked what other cars they still had available and was given a choice of a Mustage Mach E or a Mercedes GLA. I said we would accept the Mustang as being roughly equivalent, only to be told that this was an “upgrade” and so it would be an extra charge of Euro150. I am very knowledgable about cars and said that this is not an upgrade! I said we would therefore take the GLA instead (which is clearly a downgrade being a smaller, less expensive car) only to be told that the GLA would also be an approx Euro150 upgrade fee. I then said fine we will take a small petrol engine car (clearly a significant downgrade) to be told that the additional charge for such a car would be more than Euro150! At this point, given I had family with me, I reluctantly agreed to pay the Euro150 upgrade fee for the Mach E. At drop off (pre-20:00 hours) the office was closed with a key drop off box. I put my keys in the box but given I did not trust them I took photos of the car to show it was undamaged. I heard no more from Hertz or Auto Europe until I noticed my credit card had been charged Euro380. I queried this with Auto Europe who supplied an untranslated Hertz invoice. When I disputed the charge Auto Europe replied, in summary, you agreed to the charges so too late now! As above I did not agree to any of this, the post drop of charges (totalling over Euro200) I had no involvement in. A complete con from both Hertz Malaga Airport and Auto Europe.

Hertz Espana Fines and Multiple Handling Charges

Much went well with the rental, but it took a bad and frustrating turn afterwards. It is easy to get a speeding ticket in Spain, the speed limits change constantly, there is automated speed monitoring, and the limits decrease often without much logic (i.e., slow speeds in highway tunnels). Hertz Espana has a very poor system for dealing with tickets. In addition to requiring the renter to pay the ticket fine, they charge a Euro 40 handling charge for every contact they have with the local authorities about the ticket, and a single fine can result in multiple contacts and charges. Then, even if you pay the fines and handling charges (as I did), they lose track of your payments. In my case, they claimed that they never received a handling charge that I initially disputed but ultimately did pay. I provided them with a variety of evidence of payment from my credit card company, which they never accepted or acknowledged. I would not rent with them again.

No phone number works

No phone number works. Not possible to communicate with them. We lost 135€ due to delayed flight late night and not being able to ask what to do from 20:00 until 22:00 - we tried everything.

Worst service ever - No way to communicate with them

We rented a car and our flight was delayed, tried to call Hertz Barcelona Airport to ask if they will wait for us or if there will be any charges, but it was impossible to talk to anyone, the phone number they have in their website is not active, that’s the message you receive when you try to call.We had to cancel and pay a fine for cancelling, worst service ever … We had to pay a taxi 100€ …

Hertz in Spain is a Rip Off

The fact that Hertz has a 1.3 rating in Spain is no surprise. I wish I could give zero starsHertz cleaning chargesI returned a Hertz rental in my city (Girona, Spain). It was at the train station which is closed Sat and Sun. I left the keys in the drop off. I then got notified that they are charging me 300 euros for damage. They sent me a picture of the damage. It’s a minimal amount of dog hair. It would’ve taken me 10 minutes tops to vacuum this So they charged me 300 euros for some extra vacuuming. My local car was charged 150 for a full valet which takes about 6 hours. They remove the seats and everything I’ve been a Gold member in good standing for 25 years but I’m done with Hertz. They are now just as bad as the Goldcars and Budgets of the car rental world. There really is no point in choosing Hertz over any of the others. Their service has dropped so far in the last few years
