Misleading and Dishonest – Beware of Extra Charges

I’m extremely disappointed with Europcar. When I picked up my car at Birmingham Airport, I clearly declined additional protection cover, as I had already purchased my own insurance.Despite this, I was still charged £281.57 for an extra package I never agreed to. The agent made no effort to explain the charges, and I only realised later when the amount appeared on my invoice.This feels like a deliberate upsell — especially knowing that staff may be incentivised to add extras. Europcar refused to refund me, so I’ve had to escalate to the BVRLA and my credit card provider.Avoid unless you're prepared to challenge everything at the desk.

Hidden Charges & Misleading Sales – Never Again

Rented from Europcar Luton Airport and had a terrible experience.1️⃣ Hidden & Duplicate ChargesMy booking clearly stated that Airport Surcharge and Vehicle Licence Fee were prepaid. But after returning the car, I was charged again for: Licenses and Fees &Premium Station Surcharge Europcar claimed these were “not charged again,” just shown again. Yet, £214.41 was deducted from my credit card — part of which they admit was £180.18 for Roadside Assistance, which I never intended to buy. That leaves £34.23 unexplained.2️⃣ Misleading UpsellingDespite already having full insurance, I was pressured to buy Roadside Assistance at pickup. The staff explicitly told me it would not cost extra and was “included in the basic insurance.” This is clearly false and designed to exploit tourists unfamiliar with UK rental terms.3️⃣ Admin Fees Without ProofCharged £45 per “admin fee” for supposed fines or tolls — yet no evidence or notice was ever provided.❗ Avoid Europcar. It will give you nothing but a deeply unpleasant experience. Nothing else.

My wife with our young baby was preyed upon

My wife with our young baby found that the vehicle she had reserved (with a child’s car seat etc) was not available. They had an alternative vehicle, which they said it was €60 more per day. After a heated debate, because if you don’t have the vehicle the customer has reserved. Surely that should be complimentary, it was agreed that €20 surplus per day was agreed.Predatory company. Do not use

‼️ warning ‼️ warning ‼️ do not rent any vehicles from this company. I rented a car for 4 days I took full cover out which covered the Tyers and the whole of the car. So I headed to the highlands with my wife and unfortunately I got a flat tire.I called customer service to arrange for a recovery van to come out to give me a new tyre but I was told sorry we don't come to the highlands you will have to arrange your own replacement. I said too the person on the other end of the phone but I have full cover 24 hour cover is that not correct I was told you do have that cover So I said what's the problem I was then told again we don't come up to the highlands I said then you should not of sold me the policy as I told the girl at the Edinburgh airport Office that's were I am going as she asked me were I was travelling too her name is Kim I had no choice but too call my own recovery van it cost 171 pounds Europcar sells insurance policy that are false. They are full of lies do not believe them I was a member but have had enough of there lies and how they treat there costumers

Overcharging for Repair Costs

Hired a car from Toulouse Airport. On returning the vehicle they refused to examine the car. They are now saying that there is a 2 - 5cm light scuff.Cost to repair - 550ELoss of Use - 4 days - 138E Yes 4 days to repair a 2 - 5 cm light scuffAdmin - 72EMoney grubbing racket, I believe because I wouldn't take out their excess cover - I have third party cover. I will never use them again

If I could give zero stars I would

If I could give zero stars I would. Absolutely disgusting customer service. A few days after returning my hire vehicle, I received an email stating it had received fines while I was in my possession. When I viewed the images taken of the vehicle on the fine it was very clear it was not the same vehicle I hired. When I contacted them they were incredibly rude and it was clear they didn’t believe me. I asked for photos of the vehicle I hired as well as proof of the mileage used while it was in my possession. The next day I still had not received any of the proof I had asked for so called them again, this time they provided me with mileage over the phone, I then asked how I could have got from where I hired the car from to where the fines happened to back to the hire place with the mileage they had stated, this was when they finally started taking my claim somewhat seriously. They then informed me that it was probably cloned plates and I needed to contact the police, and continue to fight the fining bodies, as well as, email the fine department, again I asked for the photos of the vehicle I hired. After contacting the local police and then MET police I was informed that no Europcar had to contact them and they should know this. Another call to Europcar where again was made to feel like it was my fault and still no photos. A month, emails and phone calls later I received an email from the fines department saying one of the fines had been cleared as they could see it wasn’t the same car.The next day I received an email from my bank asking me about a suspicious transaction when I checked my account Europcar had taken out the money for the three fines without my authorisation and without contacting me. More phone calls and emails later they finally cleared all fines and returned the money. Would never use again and will be telling everyone of my experience. I never received the photos I asked for and I was the one who was constantly chasing things up. I have not received any offer of compensation for my time and stress it caused having just moved to a new country and not knowing anyone. Thanks for a wonderful warm welcome to the UK Europcar, it was very much appreciated.

Good but be careful

We had a great experience with Europcar - up until we dropped it off. We had the car for 10 days - picking up in Porto and dropping it off in Lisbon. Collection went well and the lady who served us was really friendly and helpful. We drove around 2000km during our stay mostly along traffic free motorways in the north of Portugal. When we dropped it off, they showed us a scratch on the back rear door. It definitely didn’t happen while we had the car but we didn’t take good enough photos of the car when we picked it up - the scratch just merged in with all the other minor scratches on the car. They charged me €150 for it and there doesn’t seem to be any way to appeal - they just take it off your credit card.I used Europcar as I thought I could trust them more than smaller rental companies but now I think I will just get full insurance from a reputable third party on top of the basic insurance from the rental company.My advice is take a good clear picture of every panel of the car before pickup and don’t feel rushed by the person handing the car over to you.

Terrible policy

Terrible policy - they charge if an emergency happens and you need to cancel your booking. Different tiers for bookings. Other companies offer free cancellation 24 hours and 2 hours before, which is standard, not with this lot. They're money-grabbing parasites. Smaller companies have better customer policies, so don't book with Europcar. I Recommend VIP Cars in the UK; they're great.

Poor Customer Service

I reserved a car well in advance. When I arrived they had no cars available for the model or an equivalent model. I had to have the one car that was left. Despite many phone calls and emails no real apology or anything sorted out.

Hired a car from the Gloucestershire…

Hired a car from the Gloucestershire branch, when asked if I needed to know anything about driving in the UK all I was told you drive on the same side of the road as in Australia. I returned the vehicle some 25 hours before the due date and time and never received a refund. Upon my return to Australia I received an email and infringement notice to say I drove in the coach lane at Manchester Airport for 34 seconds. I paid this fine and also received a further invoice of 45 UK pound for Europcar for passing on the original fine. When I questioned this I received an email to say my query was being investigated and I would be notified soon. I did not received a refund for the early return of the car and I advised Europecar UK to use that money to cover the cost of typing my email address to cover the costs of passing on the infringement fine. Europcar UK charged my credit card without my knowledge for the said 45 UK pound. To use my credit card without my authorization is criminal and I believe this to be corporate fraud. I am still await the 'outcome' of Europcar UK investigation. Would NOT recommend Europcar UK to any future hirers.
