Do not spend large amounts of money on this site without emailing the seller first to see if they actually exist. My experience revealed a serious safety gap in Ruby Lane's model: Low Traffic = Absent SellersMany shops appear to be on autopilot. I bought an expensive antique, and the seller didn't even know the item had sold for nearly a week because they "don't check the site often."Ruby Lane does not hold your money in escrow. The moment you click buy, the cash goes to the seller. When my seller ghosted, I couldn't just click "cancel." I had to file formal legal disputes with PayPal just to retrieve my own funds. My advice: Check eBay, Etsy, or Chairish first. On those platforms, being active and reachable is a basic requirement for selling. On Ruby Lane, you are forced to chase down inattentive store owners just to get a shipping update. Save yourself the friction and look for the item on a modern platform that actually requires its sellers to be present.
My purchases from Ruby Lane were exactly as pictured as described and expected. It seems to be a very reputable sight to purchase from and they have every person in the transaction covered by their guarantee. No doubt I will purchase from them again.
In what should have been a very simple transaction, I bought a book for $25.00. The book arrived safe and sound and in good shape.I had problems with 3 things. First, I was charged $2.70 for insurance (on a book??) that I did not want and did not need. I was given no option to refuse this.Second, I was charged a little more than 10 percent state and local tax when the combined sales tax rate in my jurisdiction is 7.9 percent.Third, somehow Paypal was inserted into this transaction even though I paid by credit card. I do not choose to deal with Paypal.Subsequent edit: I confess that I was too hasty in passing judgment, and I apologize for that. I looked it up and was surprised to learn that sales tax is indeed levied on shipping costs. That makes my comment wrong and now I have nothing to complain about!Mea culpa. Sorry!
I had a good experience shopping on Ruby Lane. The store has a unique collection, especially if you like vintage or one-of-a kind items. The product details were clear, and the seller communication was good. My order arrived safely and matched the description. Prices can be a bit high, but the quality and authenticity make up for it. Overall, it felt like a trustworthy place to shop for special items.
