I recently visited Cote in Basingstoke. I cannot fault the service which was excellent. However the menu choices in the Prix Fixe for someone who is dairy intolerant are poor. All sauces have dairy so none could be offered to replace the sauce in the Poulet bacon. The only DF option in the desserts was sorbet. It’s such a shame as with a little thought this chain of restaurants could be so much more inclusive.
I’ve been a loyal customer of Côte for years, but unfortunately, the quality has noticeably declined, turning what was once a great experience into a disappointment.The famous Steak Frites—described as a 5oz minute steak topped with garlic butter, served with frites and a herb garnish—used to come with a beautiful little salad as the garnish. Now, it has been downgraded to nothing more than a handful of parsley. To make matters worse, even that was forgotten, and I had to request it separately.On top of that, we had an incredibly awkward encounter with our waiter. While he was generally friendly and helpful, his attitude changed when we asked for a salt shaker. Instead of simply assisting us, he insisted it was already on the table. "It's there! Where is it? It was right there!"—as if we had somehow hidden or taken it. It was ridiculous and made us feel uncomfortable, as if we were being accused of something absurd. I genuinely wish they had checked the cameras to see how unprofessional his behavior was.To make matters worse, I had taken friends visiting from abroad, hoping to give them a good dining experience. Needless to say, I won’t be returning.
I used to go regularly despite the meals were never cooked to a good standard. I tolerated this as the atmosphere was good . Ive been going for years to cote and the interesting part was someone held the tray where the waiter placed the plates on the table. they dont bother anymore. the portions get smaller and the ingredients change so certain menu items are not the same now. i've finally decided to call it a day on cote . If they read the reviews they dont take any notice
Coeliac here - I had my birthday meal with 8 people at Cote in Muswell Hill last night. Honestly, it was fantastic. I felt 100% safe, had my own good menu, lots of choices and for the first time I felt relaxed, not watchful and able to really celebrate. They are a dedicated and certified safe Gluten Free restaurant. Highly recommended for a special family dinner if you are Coeliac. Everyone else was able to choose from a 'normal' menu but there was no chance of a mix-up, because of the strict kitchen protocols and my dinner had a gluten free flag on it.
We have been customers of the Esher branch of this restaurant since it opened and have always enjoyed its consistently good food, welcoming staff and excellent service. Sadly, it is a shadow of its former self and has all the signs of a failing business. We arrived to discover that there were only two staff to serve all the customers – a waiter and a trainee. No manager, no bar staff, no front-of-house staff.To his credit, the waiter was very professional, courteous and efficient, despite the overwhelming challenge of have to deal with food orders, bar orders and payments, while also helping the trainee.A potentially awful evening was averted by the efforts of this impressive young man and his assistant, with no thanks to the management or owners.The food was of good quality as usual, and was served quickly, but the portions were disappointingly small and poor value for money.One can only hope that this was a temporary setback and that management will restore this restaurant to its former excellence. Failing that, and judging by the comments and complaints of other diners on the night, it may already be too late …..
